D&D 5E (2014) Has D&D spoiled you on other RPGs?

No. I also like TORG Eternity, Savage Worlds and World of Darkness. These games do other things than D&D high fantasy.

D&D General What Was Your First Time Playing and/or Running D&D Like?

1st edition, 1986. I was so excited to play a wizard. Then I discovered 1st level wizards suck. After that, my usual character was a cleric or an elven multi-class fighter/wizard.

D&D General One Piece of Art II (Monsters)- What D&D Art Inspired You to Love a Monster?

Artist: Larry Elmore Source: Cover of Dragons of Winter Night This made me wish I was a dragonrider. Preferably a dragon that eats kender.

D&D 5E (2014) Your PCs have Character Classes/Levels, and no one else does!

I favor an approach where characters with class levels are similar to "wild cards" in Savage Worlds. They are special and unique individuals. Most people, mooks, etc. don't have class levels. But there are other individuals besides the PCs who have them. An NPC with class levels is...

D&D 5E (2014) "I would play in a 5e game with no caster classes at all" (a poll)

I have a caster fetish so my answer is HELL NO. I'd rather play Toon. (In fairness, I'd do it for a one-shot or two-shot game).

    D&D 5E (2014) Bardlock vs Sorlock

In a nutshell, the bardlock has superior support while the sorlock has superior DPS, especially if you choose the quicken spell metamagic (which I recommend). I would also recommend the agonizing blast invocation. In times past I would have said the bardlock is more flexible and versatile...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5E Special

Interesting, I did not know that. Hopefully the massive success of 5E will not make The Powers That Be so overconfident/self-indulgent that they return to the diarrhea splatbook stream of editions past. The online Unearthed Arcanas have been a good vehicle for testing half-baked ideas and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5E Special

One change from previous editions is that 5E has become more measured in the release of supplements. During 2E, 3.X and 4E, they ran out splatbooks like a bad case of diarrhea. It's highly questionable if that approach was good for the long-term health of the game. I doubt it was even good...

D&D General What's wrong with Perception?

This complaint is hardly unique to Dungeons and Dragons. On the Savage Worlds boards I've seen similar complaints about the over-importance of the Notice skill. In the World of Darkness it's the Awareness skill.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5E Special

Well, for instance there is a reason why Critical Role switched from Pathfinder to 5E. According to the Critical Role wiki, they felt it was a more streamlined system which would be easier for all involved. Would the show have been as big a hit if they stuck with Pathfinder? We'll never know...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5E Special

5E certainly benefited from a confluence of fortunate circumstances. The success of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones popularized fantasy for the masses. The rise of livestream D&D acted as a gateway for many people. And one of these, Critical Role, became such as massive...

D&D General Why does D&D still have 16th to 20th level?

I have little interest in those levels and have rarely played them. I'd be fine with the game ending at 15. But based on what I see online, there does seem to be a niche market for it.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's Your (Character's) Constitution Score?

I always play casters. My constitution scores fall within the 14-16 range. 16 con with proficiency in constitution saves is usually as high as I go. I prefer this if maintaining concentration is very important (such as for a summoner). For a blaster caster, I'd be more likely to run with a...

D&D in the 80s, Fads, and the Satanic Panic

It makes sense that if the media/authority figures make something seem forbidden, it can actually INCREASE interest in the forbidden thing. In the early 2000s this phenomenon became known as the "Streisand Effect" -- when an attempt to censor or remove information has the unintended consequence...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Survivor - Deities Final Round: Anubis Wins!

The real-world deities have rarely featured in campaigns I have played in. Cleric is my most frequently played class and only about 5% of my clerical characters worshiped a real-world deity. It seems my experience is not reflective of their popularity.

D&D 5E (2024) The Half Orc. Are they still needed?

Perhaps if their 5.5 racial abilities give them a certain niche which is distinct from the orc, as opposed to just being watered-down orcs.
