D&D General Anyone have the DC20 alpha? What do you think?

I'm not so generous. His given reasoning is specious at best. I have played entire campaigns with homebrew games that will never see the light of day, written by a friend in their free time. No RPG system really did quite what I wanted for running Star Wars: So I wrote my own, and ran a 5 year...

Grade the Pathfinder 2E Game System

I have noticed that there is a bit of a divide beginning to occur in the hobby. A lot of PF2's public proponents on youtube play via a VTT - where a lot of the complexity is offloaded by automation from the players and GM. I wonder how much this will begin to impact the hobby as you could...

MCDM's New Tactical TTRPG Hits $1M Crowdfunding On First Day!

First, I gotta say that 2 million + in the first day is crazy money. Second: I don't begrudge MCDM one penny of that cash. It's hard making money in RPG land, and if they can make a living off of it - more power to them. Third: There must be a whole lot of good will built up from past projects...

Shadowrun 1st Edition To Be Reprinted

What a backhanded commentary on their new edition. 6 editions and they are still figuring out the rules... There is a happy medium between the overdone rules mess they have been chasing for six editions, and Shadowrun anarchy. It is clear now that the current IP holder will never pursue that...

    R. Talsorian updates on Cyberpunk RED, The Witcher, and a new secret project

That's what makes it weird. Will it really make that much of a difference when you make new adventures? Will it really make that much of a difference for sourcebooks on known established areas? It shouldn't. Certainly not enough to 'shut down' the whole line. 'Metaplot' is the only answer that...

    R. Talsorian updates on Cyberpunk RED, The Witcher, and a new secret project

My feelings on the Witcher RPG are in the thread for all to read; but this is just silly: https://www.dicebreaker.com/games/the-witcher-trpg/news/the-witcher-rpg-announces-hiatus-thanks-to-video-game Metaplot is the devil. Has no one learned anything from the past mistakes made by Vampire...

How hard is learning a new TTRPG system?

I’ve been running a series of one shots while we are in between campaigns. Somehow they have managed to pick up the basics of three different systems in as many sessions. It’s just not that hard…

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

As I posted earlier in the thread: Amazon takes Half. If Amazon takes half; it is likely that other VOD providers are similar. Under you assumptions with the studios receiving a more realistic 50% of revenue: HaT has only made: $58.8 million. (VOD/Streaming) $58.8 million - $74.8 million =...

D&D General What Should Today's Archetypes Be

My Tinfoil Hat alt-universe speculations: I'd quibble; with people citing Anime/Magna; as I feel it's impossible to know what form they would take without D&D's early influence. And I don't see the average wargamer paying them much attention, because... My personal opinion is; that a "D&D"...

(+)Do Any TTRPGs Do Dueling Really Well?

Honor+Intrigue more or less hits all your bullet points. Different weapons and fighting styles are better at different maneuvers. Once pc’s advance their fighting styles a bit it is one of the few systems where you can intentionally string moves together. It might not be quite as intricate as...

D&D 5E (2024) Do you think they will add more races to PHB2024 to make up for dropping other stuff?

As someone of mixed parentage myself; after reading through this thread I am of the opinion that Wotc needs to poop or get off the pot on the whole "Mixed Ancestry" issue. It is impossible to make everyone happy on this issue no matter what Choice they make. In my opinion; No Half-Anything in...

D&D 5E (2014) Phandelver starting to show up in the wild. NewbieDM looks to be the first!

My personal favorite are the ones that will mock RPG's. But be heavily involved in fantasy football... Because being emotionally invested in your make believe football team is obviously far more mature than my believe adventurers...

D&D 5E (2014) Phandelver starting to show up in the wild. NewbieDM looks to be the first!

Well when they are counting everything played electronically, there's nothing more to say. Obviously Games like Candy crush, and solitaire, were exactly the kind of 'video games' I was thinking of when I typed: This is an internet 'gotcha' well done. If I try and explain what type of video...

D&D 5E (2014) Phandelver starting to show up in the wild. NewbieDM looks to be the first!

I'll take that metrics definition of what it means to be "playing video games" with a grain of salt. Unless I'm seriously supposed to believe that about 75% of the US population played video games in 2019...

D&D 5E (2014) Phandelver starting to show up in the wild. NewbieDM looks to be the first!

The most visible pseudo medieval Fantasy IP's newbies* are likely to be familiar with: Lord of the Rings Game of Thrones A good first impression is giving people what they expect. And a pseudo european medieval town fits the bill quite nicely. *If they play video games all bets are off.

    Unpopular opinions go here

It’s hard to be in awe of the “decades of study and experience” of professional elf-game designers when one man shops like Kevin Crawford consistently release product with demonstrably tighter design, and less systemic issues than the big players. Very much this. How many editions of Shadowrun...

    Unpopular opinions go here

Truth. But in their defense they would be less likely to do so if the professional game designers themselves didn’t vastly overestimate their knowledge of and talent for game design, evaluating balance, gameplay, when releasing poorly play-tested product...

    Still Searching for "That" System

If the OSR game holds true to the B/X AD&D conceit of 1 HD = 1d8; Then It's implied in the monster stat blocks. All NPC and Monster HD are d8's. A Sword wielded by a PC does 1d8 damage. That's your basic encounter math: The old chainmail conceit of 1HD = 1"Hit". How many 1d8 Sword hits can the...
