Giving Players a peek behind the DM screen

I don't actually use a screen, except off to the side as a reference. (I compulsively fiddle with dice, so making secret rolls to avoid any metagame thinking isn't a problem for me.) Generally speaking, I don't need it. In the rare situations like you described, where plausibility is stretched...

    AD&D DMG, on fudging

Maybe, but that's not what fudging is. Would Knights of the Old Republic be "just as good of a game" if, when the game engine has otherwise determined that you're about to die, the bad guy whiffs, and you know (or suspect) that the outcome was changed?

"Kick Down the Door" Poll for DM's

I run M&M, and random villain attacks are very in-genre (and easy to improvise).

    Gaming Paper in use.

I got mine at OfficeMax, I think. About the same price. (That is significantly cheaper than the gaming paper, right?) Still waiting on those Dire Hula-Hoop stats, dammit.

    Gaming Paper in use.

Two questions: (1) What makes this stuff superior to the (far less expensive) easel pads? (2) Can you provide the stat-block (in3.5 format, please) for a Dire Hula-Hoop?

    Do you "save" the PCs?

Look, if every single one of my experiences with anything goes one way, and I have a lot of those experiences, I'm going to believe my experiences over what you tell me the experiences of someone else have been. If you tell me what your experiences have been, I'll need to make a judgment as to...

    Participation Trophies

I don't really mind a "participation trophy" if there a real trophy for the winner(s). On the other hand, I don't really get the point, except for the mentally handicapped. Kids generally know when winning or losing is (or is not) important, and kids generally know who won or lost. Usually a...

    Do you "save" the PCs?

It seems fairly clear that you get a nickel for every time you say OneTrueWayism (what, no ®?), so why be sorry?

What actor would play your character?

    Stephen Baldwin? Seriously?

    AD&D DMG, on fudging

Fifth Element and I already won the other thread. It should really be framed and hoisted into EN World's rafters.

    Do you "save" the PCs?

Except that one is way more worthwhile and interesting than the other, of course.

    Do you "save" the PCs?

That's not fudging. You and I win the thread.

    Do you "save" the PCs?

So, (a) your players know you fudge, (b) you sometimes fudge to save a PC and other times don't do so, and (c) it's possible for that to happen so that it corresponds with whomever the DM likes more that night. Right? If, to keep a PC from dying, you have a choice of: (1) Having it attack...

    Do you "save" the PCs?

So ... you might end up fudging to save the PC of the player who bought the pizza that night, while allowing the PC of the player who argued with you earlier to die? (Note that I'm not implying any causation. I'm asking if the "feeling" you have that determines whether or not you save a PC...

    Do you "save" the PCs?

So you fudge to keep characters alive. All the time? If only sometimes, how do you decide? (Oh, and you didn't answer: As a player, do you prefer secret fudging or not-secret fudging?)
  16. Jeff Wilder

    Do you "save" the PCs?

Why? (Note that I'm not asking for a contrast: "Why here, but not here?" I'm asking, "Why do you prefer no fudge?") Interestingly, I'm pretty much the exact opposite. A four- or five-hour convention game, for instance, is the one type of game where I think it's possible that the harm of...

    Do you "save" the PCs?

My guess? "No problem. Here's a pool of tokens (as many as you'd like). When you want me to fudge, ask me to spend one. Feel free to ask for more whenever you like." Personally, I don't think the experiment would last long in a game like D&D because, IME, players pretty quickly grow tired...

    Do you "save" the PCs?

I, personally, believe that Fifth Element and Umbran are okay with fudging. I believe that's their preference, and because it's their preference, I believe that they enjoy it. However, I don't believe it is the best way to play a game. Even if Fifth Element and Umbran are excellent DMs, I...

    Do you "save" the PCs?

Okay, can you quote one? I'll be happy to respond, but I really would like to see a specific example of what you mean.

    Do you "save" the PCs?

Give me an example? (I'm pretty sure I already covered what you mean with my suggestion to "make the roll with different parameters," above, but I'm not positive.)
