Roll20's Latest Report Shows Growth Everywhere!

Not really... There were changes, but they were hardly substantial. Removing resonance and small balance tweaks didn't make it into a different game. Rebalancing of spells, revisions of classes, etc. There were arguably as more changes made between 3.0 and 3.5 or 3.5 (or even 3.5 to PF1) but I...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you like to see in 5e books?

I'd like the next couple rules expansions to be more focused. Tome of Foes was a mess and had no clear purpose. Was it a book of conflicting factions? Was it the book on the PC race lore? It had no idea. Stronger themes. But honestly, I have more than enough content for years of play and a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Retainers/followers/companions: how?

Which is neat but can still lead to some option paralysis as players have a larger hand size of actions and questioning when they should "use" their followers. And I worry that it would really make them more feats than an NPC. If your goal is less actions, you could just remove the action...

    D&D 5E (2014) Retainers/followers/companions: how?

Unless running a 1-on-1 game I'd avoid having more than 1-3 followers. And even then, these should be mostly support and avoid combat. They're there for roleplaying more and less for stealing the spotlight. The sidekick rules should be more than enough. It's hard to get simpler than that...

Roll20's Latest Report Shows Growth Everywhere!

Your argument is that it's bad because it doesn't count each individual session being played separately? Also, wouldn't this apply equally to Adventurer's League, greatly increasing the number of D&D sessions?

Roll20's Latest Report Shows Growth Everywhere!

... So... Roll20 collects data from 40,00 games and Fantasy Grounds collects data from 50,000 games but you have an accurate reflection on the industry because you manage a dozen games? I'm sure PaizoCon is doing well. It's a great opportunity for curious people to test the system. But it's...

Roll20's Latest Report Shows Growth Everywhere!

This is one of those finicky distinctions. PF2 is probably the second best selling RPG on the market and well above the 3rd and 4th best selling... but it's still below Pathfinder1 in terms of popularity. Which really says more about the #3+ RPGs being sold... Because while Warhammer and Call...

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

Because this isn't that thread. This is a thread about how you're not Matt Mercer and the "Matt Mercer effect". I imagine a "hey, lets talk about all the awesome stuff Matt Mercer has done for the hobby" thread would be just as long. Heck, just discussing 826LA would take a few hundred words...

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

Nobody gets to choose how something makes them feel. And how we do that isn't to tell them it's their fault for having unrealistic expectations.

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

Matt Mercer isn't victimizing us, true. We're victimizing ourselves. Either rightly because our players are judging us unfairly against an impossible standard or wrongly because we just think they are. The list of things I need to work on is long indeed and only getting longer. I'll add...

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

I think the difference is anyone who picked-up D&D blind 10 or 20 years ago had no idea they sucked as DM. I certainly had no idea in the early '90s how bad of a DM I was. I happily ran my games blissfully unaware I was making every DMing mistake in the book. And many players took up DMing...

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

I'm not blaming Mercer in any way shape or form. I'm just saying I can understand people being intimidated by his skill and the impression he has made in the community. YES! The person who is exposed to something new and tries it out only to fall short on every concievable metric. Because...

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

First, blaming the victim is never a particularly good position in anything. Second, this which would be fine if they had someone else to compare themselves to. Previously, new DMs had no comparisons as they were starting blind or had the comparison of a friend. There were no professionals...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a Dark Sun book (sans psionics)?

I expect Dark Sun in 2021 or 2022 with a mystic as a centerpiece class, like the artificer I’m Eberron. But giving people psionic again, even with a new class, isn’t a new agnostic mechanic. Despite having a new class that could work in any setting Eberron still had the patron system.

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

Okay then. I’ll and. AND when kids finds out they can’t play basketball like Jordan many give up. Some practice and get slightly better but after failing badly, many people just stop trying. The disparity between what they’re capable of and what others can do is just too great. And there’s the...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a Dark Sun book (sans psionics)?

Right. But we’re getting psionic content this fall in a book that doesn’t sound very Dark Sun based on the UA. So it won’t be unique to the setting. There’s no new feature, which WotC thinks is needed.

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a Dark Sun book (sans psionics)?

Yeah, but also choosing your race and providing new mechanical options like a magic item or bonus feat. I think it was planned as bigger than it ended up being. But it was a selling feature. And it’s not like the Eberron patron system is mechanically heavy,

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want in a Dark Sun book (sans psionics)?

I’m still curious about what side setting agnostic mechanic or subsystem they could add to the book, as an additional selling feature. Like factions in Ravnica, patrons in Eberron, heroic chronicle in Wildemount, and the books of Theros. Maybe something related to multiple characters, like...
