D&D 5E (2014) How game-breaking is it if GW Fighting Style applies to smites?

I don't think "-X/+Y" should be a thing at all. It presents a decision which is boring and easy to optimize, and it's also very powerful, so players have a strong incentive to optimize it. If you want to give martials more damage, just give them a damage bonus across the board and be done with it.

D&D General BG3 Massive Spoiler Thread

Another option for melee enthusiasts is the Astral Tadpole. It's much easier to close with the enemy when you can fly at will, at double normal speed. However, that's not available until Act 3. (It also requires you to go down a path that you may not want to go down for RP reasons, and you'll...

Are you using Tavern Brawler on Karlach? If so, you probably don't need a tank for her. TB boosts her accuracy so high that she can eat disadvantage for throwing in melee and still be over 90%. In fact, I used TB/throw Karlach herself as my tank in my first Honor run. I went with an "all...

D&D 5E (2014) How game-breaking is it if GW Fighting Style applies to smites?

The problem is not that the feat in isolation is powerful. The problem is that it combos with absolutely anything that boosts your accuracy, and the more accuracy boosts you can scrounge, the better it gets. Take a 5th-level barbarian with 18 Str, a greatsword, and a 65% base chance to hit...

D&D General BG3 Massive Spoiler Thread

Darkness theme is cool and surprisingly effective, and between the tadpole and the Emperor, there's plenty of RP justification for everyone in your party putting a couple levels into GOO-pact warlock. (There are also a couple magic items that grant immunity to blindness, though very few...

D&D General BG3 Massive Spoiler Thread

I agree -- and I say that as someone who beat Honor Mode while taking on all the bosses, just to see if I could. I enjoy challenging myself that way, but I also want to be able to turn the heat down, play with less-optimal choices, and focus on the roleplaying which is BG3's best aspect, while...

You can also just cast it around your own party and you'll be immune the whole fight, as long as you don't move out or lose concentration. Requires you to have ranged non-spell attacks, but you should have those anyway; throwing weapons for the Strength builds, crossbows for everyone else. Don't...

D&D General Whom did you romance in Baldur's Gate 3?

Not necessarily. It's quite possible to be a heroic character and still romance Astarion. The thing to keep in mind is that the "X approves" and "X disapproves" messages aren't all created equal. Sometimes they signal a 1-point shift in approval; sometimes 10 or even 15. As a rule, the big...

D&D General Whom did you romance in Baldur's Gate 3?

Origin Gale romancing Karlach is my plan for my next run, too. Going for a "doomed lovers" setup; my idea (though I don't know how well the game supports it) is that they send everyone else away at the end, then

D&D General Whom did you romance in Baldur's Gate 3?

Shadowheart first, then Minthara on my first evil playthrough. I didn't meet Karlach until my third run, and she instantly became (and remains) my favorite. Lae'zel to round out the ladies, then Astarion for a change of pace. Then the , because I had to at least see what that was like.

Did you mean for this to be a single-option poll?

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

SG works great on Balanced difficulty. The problem is that in higher difficulties, the monsters are substantially tougher and get higher save bonuses, and SG doesn't just knock them right down any more. Your cleric will have their concentration disrupted (monsters are smart enough to focus-fire...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

Not at Tactician/Honor Mode difficulties. It's useful in Act 2 where you get swarmed by mooks a lot and radiant damage is essential to turn off wraith and shadow invisibility. But otherwise it's too slow-acting for a concentration spell that requires the caster to be in harm's way. I generally...

D&D 5E (2014) Should DnDBeyond include an Encounter Simulator?

Exactly. I've played around with the idea, but there's just way too much to implement. With modern AI to make the play decisions, I can see how it could be done, but it would not be at all easy to build, and it would not be cheap, either. And, as you say, its results would still have to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Turn 2 full casters into pact casters

But it would straitjacket character concepts. If you want to play a divine (or, for warlocks, quasi-divine) caster, you no longer have a neo-Vancian option. You're stuck with pact magic. Likewise, if you want to play an arcane caster, you have no pact magic option and can only use neo-Vancian...

D&D 5E (2014) Turn 2 full casters into pact casters

Sorcerer is a no-brainer. The warlock mechanic fits the sorcerer concept perfectly; better, in fact, than it fits the warlock concept. For the third option, I'd pick druid. It would make druidic magic feel truly distinct from clerical magic, and their invocations could be different wild shapes.

D&D 5E (2024) [+] Future of The SRD Speculation Thread

[Edit: I see I got ninja-ed on this.] The first question is, will there be any updates to the SRD at all? After all, it's been a year since they announced their intention to move the 3.5E SRD into Creative Commons, and if there's been any movement on that front, I haven't heard of it. Now, to...

D&D General [+] Warlock Build Chat

Per the PHB: "If you have temporary hit points and receive more of them, you decide whether to keep the ones you have or to gain the new ones." So, to gain temp hp from false life, you have to give up the ones from armor of Agathys. And since armor of Agathys triggers if "a creature hits you...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I will certainly buy the PHB. Based on what I have seen so far, and barring unexpected drastic revisions, I expect that I will want to make the switch, and I think the rest of my gaming table will either a) agree with my preference or b) not care either way.
