AI GMs and what players value

I think such a thing is much more likely to be developed within the video game industry than in the RPG industry. There's more financial resources and more programmer talent there. And, video gamers are already accustomed to things like computer-generated environments (Minecraft), monsters...

"'Aldarc?' What kind of a name is that?" rolls eyes at camera The latter is actually potentially engaging, because it has to do with what is actually happening to your character. The former is busywork. Wildhelm the Fighter does not know or think about the fact that he only has one use of...

What is the single best science fiction or fantasy franchise?

If I must vote in an election for the greatest Star[thing] franchise, I'm going to back the dark horse. Despite changing mediums and passing through multiple producers' and companies' hands, the Stargate franchise managed to not produce anything genuinely crappy for fifteen years (when the...

D&D General DMs Guild and DriveThruRPG ban AI written works, requires labels for AI generated art

Most people in this thread are speaking from the point of view of artists and writers, or considering the legality of machine learning in general. That's all well and good, but let's think about this from a customer's perspective as well. AI-generated products are just spam. They don't provide...

People who say alignment is a straightjacket are Chaos-aligned. 🙂 It's called romanticism, and it's what makes fantasy great. Fantasy does not exist in the realm of the rational, but the emotional. That is also why "hard" magic systems never quite satisfy. They are missing the point.

It's Not Easy to Find a Gaming Group

Remember, three people is enough to play! Maybe even two. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. What has worked for me is, invite two people you actually know and like. Then, play with them in public. Game stores are most ideal here. What you'll find happening is that people will see...

There should only be three alignments. Good, Neutral, and Evil. Law/Chaos has precedent in Anderson and Moorecock, which isn't nothing. But, Good/Evil has had precedent in the literary and philisophical traditions of most human cultures throughout the world for thousands of years.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am never funny. Some of my best sessions have involved betrayals and conflicts between PC's. As long as the players (not necessarily the characters) involved all consent to it, it's good fun.

PvP is fun, generates great stories, and is often the outcome of good roleplaying.

Hell, yes. Chargen is the drudgery that you have to work through before you can have fun playing an RPG. Keep it as short as possible!

I should perhaps have said "original settings." Yeah obviously Lankhmar is swords-and-sorcery.

Unpopular opinion I: Nitpicky details such as encumbrance, travel times, and ammo-counting is great, actually. Rules-lite systems are fine for quick, casual one-shots. For a serious campaign, though, high-crunch systems are superior. The rules people often complain about as being boring or...

Which franchise of three or more works has the highest ratio of hits to misses?

Halo. I mean this is subjective, but by reckoning, 6 or 7 of the main series of eight games are excellent. The Halo Wars subseries isn't great, but it's okay. The many novels and comics are all, at worst, decent mil sci fi.

D&D General Data from a million DnDBeyond character sheets?

My experience has been that many players just want to not deal with hitting their encumbrance limits, and many DM's are more then happy to give them an excuse not to.

Besides RPGs and Video Games, What Do You Do For Fun?

I play about an hour of video games and then read a chapter or two of a book after my baby goes to bed. Sometimes I might take that hour to watch a TV show rather than play a video game. On Thursday nights, I watch a movie with my wife. (My posts in this forum are made between tasks at work)...

D&D 5E (2024) Is there any confusion between Poison Damage and the Poisoned Condition?

It has never caused confusion at my table, but there is something inelegant about two essentially unrelated mechanics having the same name.

    How Do I Escape D&D?

Your mileage may vary. My old online group was delighted to switch from D&D to The Dark Eye precisely because it was more complex than D&D. They'd been playing D&D to death for years, had mastered its mechanics, and were interested in something they could perceive as more "advanced." It...
