When did the "C" drop from CRPGs and when did "TT"RPG spring up?

I only seen the "TTRPG" in the last decade at most, when Stranger Things and CR made D&D bigger. For the many forums and websites (which were RPG focused, not video game focused) I was on, I never saw TTRPG until then. Again, it's sort of weird at a nomenclature level. It's like all the sport...

When did the "C" drop from CRPGs and when did "TT"RPG spring up?

I'll disagree with the "always" on TTRPG, it wasn't even a thing for over a decade vs always. And I still petition that the original hobby shouldn't have a nomenclature in honor of being the original. e.g. One doesn't call a wrench a Manual 1/2in wrench to differentiate it from a ratchet...

Then you haven't tried to find all the optional piercing damage rules then. :ROFLMAO: Most people don't know that cramped terrain does not give a bane to piercing damage weapons.

Monsters & More: An In-Depth Review of the 2025 D&D Monster Manual

Which is amusing as I first saw them as bait for people wanting to portray an edge lord/angsty PC. How they are portrayed now was not on my bingo card. Not judging that style but didn't see it coming.

Monsters & More: An In-Depth Review of the 2025 D&D Monster Manual

That was something I enjoyed in 4e, the "families" of iconic monsters. It helped an adventure keep a theme while adding variety. Same. I actually think Assimar should have been a default PC race and the Tieflings as second fiddle. Guess I am still scarred from the Satanic Panic, :ROFLMAO:

Polygon: Indie TTRPG Companies are "sitting in their own little corners of the internet and wringing their hands"

Perhaps this is why it seems most Sci-Fi needs an established IP to get off the ground. 40 plus years of canon creates the "just is." for some people. Even then it is tricky because these franchises run on certain tropes and unspoken expectations. I'm sure you've heard horror stories of that...

Agreed, especially natural wildlife. Though in many of my games over the year, the moment an enemy runs the PCs try to run them down. So the only difference is the fight wrapping up faster. :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, everyone is different but when it comes to the wandering monster/morale discussion and a GM says, "I want to be surprised!" I comprehend, but also don't understand on a certain level - especially for tables that have any sort of curve to them as they'll have an average (e.g. the most...

As a continuing note, I went to ignoring random monster charts for decades of D&D, to new found respect for them in OSR, to loving them in DB: In D&D, they were just entries of what/how many wandering monsters with no clues to Mr. New GM (me) on how to use them beyond challenges to the party's...

Critical Role To Wrap Up Third Campaign, New Exandria Unlimited Miniseries Announced

And to be honest with WotC's traditional Xmas layoffs, you can't guarantee your friends will always be there so it's a bit of futureproofing as well. Slight tangent, I know a lot of sales and marketing people who consider their client not the company but the company representative they work...

Critical Role To Wrap Up Third Campaign, New Exandria Unlimited Miniseries Announced

I've never been able to focus on their episodes for more than half an hour, but love the shorts they do Youtube (and I am sure they are also on TickTock/Redwhatever). OTH, I greatly appreciate for what they have done for the hobby. And of course anytime creative people can not only survive but...

Dungeons & Dragons Teases New Campaign Settings

Apologies, I meant to add that for many ttRPG fans, Mass Combat rules probably just seem to be another flavor of theatre of the mind combat. e.g. Savage Worlds is even minis friendly but with Mass Combat, the game is still a ttrpg, the same for Reign which never uses minis. If someone wants to...

Dungeons & Dragons Teases New Campaign Settings

Mass Combat definitely as Savage Worlds, Reign, and other RPGs have rules to determine how the PCs preparation and strategy plays out in a battle without the need for miniatures and table of terrain. And most of those RPGs will call those subsystems "Mass Combat." As several companies and...

Dungeons & Dragons Teases New Campaign Settings

Around that time, I was into other things and I had also noticed that a lot of the core boxes for these settings devoted a large page count to rules needed to shoehorned a concept into the AD&D rules (round hole, square peg.) Nowadays we have whole OSR games with smaller page counts that...

One of my house rules for DB Journey rules is that I use hex maps and use a hex as a unit of measure vs the 15m in the book. On that note, last week my players were breaking new territory with no map and the our short session was nothing but the consequences of failing Bushcraft rolls. :ROFLMAO:

Slight correction, WotC is developing a sci-fi setting and also decided to not use Star Frontiers at this time. The 3pp sci-fi settings have already been out for several years and one was nominated for Ennie.

Dungeons & Dragons Teases New Campaign Settings

Well, you sort of have that already with 3pp making sci-fi 5e. One of them is even a WotC freelancer and a DM Guild Adept. However, I can tell you that for most D&D fans, such settings will fly like a lead balloon. In reaching out to promote such a setting, a press guy said, "I don't know if my...
