How long before you tire of a thread here?

That reminds me of the time on Usenet a guy ranted about how women can’t right proper (=hard) sf, and used a book by Catherine Asaro as an example. She replied that it’s Dr. Catherine Asaro and that the bit he was complaining about was speculation directly related to her dissertation and...

Different Games for the Referee and Players

I’ve never tried it but am very entertained by the thought. Anyone here got experience with it?

What are you reading in 2025?

Blood Standard, Black Mountain, Wirse Angels, and The Wind Began To Howl, by Laird Barron. Three novels and a novella, all featuring the same main character. We meet Isaiah Coleridge, who narrates all of these, in Alaska. He says, “Those movies by Albert Broccoli about the world-famous spy? In...

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

In a world where moderators roam the land, monsters flourish in the endless darkness. Nothing can save the victims of the red text and there is no pity for the fallen.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

I haven’t formalized my thoughts about this, but just as it’s good practice to have a manuscript complete or nearly so before launching, it’d probably be good practice to have at least one person who has no other duties on a project but who can be backup communications. @The Sigil : I am 100%...

For those who don't play D&D (or its clones), what keeps you engaged with EN World?

I’m both a bard lover and elf enthusiast, and imagine Snarf gesturing and saying that it’s okay, I’m one of the good ones, I’ll get purged late if not last. As for me being here as a non-D&D player, it’s the same as others say. I like the news, the pace of traffic is very manageable apart from...

Friction and thus entropy are here to help you, but they take a while.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

I don’t find a delay of 6-24 months anything like innately “unacceptable”. The lower end of that is and always has been commonplace in gaming and in many other kinds of niche publishing. For that matter, the upper end is too, including venerable companies like Chaosium and larger players of...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. As I mention from time to time, Dad designed ranging systems for JPL, and his office’s list of projects includes the Voyagers. So this is family business in a very real way. I wish I could tell him. But I’ll be able to tell Mom in the morning, and she’ll...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

People are complex enough the any confident guess on scant info will likely be went, including mine. I’ve known truly horrible people with parents I knew well enough to know they were generally good folks who made the world better for their being there, and astonishingly vile parents whose...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

In recent years, I’ve counted both backing and receiving what I’ve backed. This is probably contrary to some deep lore and anti-player and/or anti-GM, but it’s me, whaddya expect?

What does it take for an RPG to die?

Yup. I find that phenomenon fascinating. But then I would.

D&D General Arneson, Gygax, and Lawsuits, Oh My! An Actual History of the OG D&D Litigation

Impressive, as per Darth Vader. Good work, Snarf.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

Yeah. A fair number of gamers dislike PDFs. Many of them will pay substantially more for print over PDF. (Insert 400 pages of argument over format here.) But the fraction who outright refuse to ever use PDFs even when they’re the only alternative for a product is pretty small.

What does it take for an RPG to die?

Yeah, there are. Most years there’s a release or two for it, and they do sell and get discussed in ways that suggest they’re getting played.

That sounds very appealing to me. I’ll be checking it out. If I had anything approaching that kind of organization, I’d be tooting. Nifty! Your descriptions are great, and really helpful. Thank you!

D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

It’s one of several games that were evolving in parallel to D&D - they started before D&D. They’d look less like D&D than they do in reality, but probably not radically different. More or fewer stats, different fundamental qualities, different score ranges, but likely recognizable. They were all...
