Nominate The Top 10 Mobile Apps For Tabletop RPGs!

I use D&D Beyond for referencing items, spells, and rules while running or playing. I use Fantasy Grounds on my tablet for encounters, maps, initiative, and character tracking. The only thing bad about D&D Beyond is the cost, but for me it is worth it...

    Vampire 5 Organized Play Launches

Vampire is a very political and social game which lends itself well to LARPing. LARPs are like anything involving people, they will vary in content and quality. I have had many great experiences with Vampire both in tabletop and LARP form, so just look for a group that works well for you and...

    D&D General Science in D&D

Speaking to this (and the other questions), it depends on what you mean by science. Generally, science is a methodology or process by which we come to understand our existence. It is not really a specific set of rules to the universe but is instead the way in which we discern those rules. In...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking defenseless NPCs

I mean by that we can either follow a character driven narration of events (Your arrow cuts through the night and (Roll D20) silences the guard before he can sound an alarm), or we can follow a rules driven narration of events (Move to x space, roll initiative, you have surprise, roll D20, roll...

    D&D 5E (2014) Acquisitions Incorporated Takes Over D&D: A Review

That is definitely one opinion and outlook. It is not the only one, which is the answer to your boggle as to why they have such a following and why it warrants a book. A great many, including myself, find them funny. I would also argue that while Forgotten Realms has adventuring organizations...

    D&D 5E (2014) Acquisitions Incorporated Takes Over D&D: A Review

The abilities on the bookmarks were terrible in my opinion. They were all combat abilities with no narrative value, and seemed tacked on to the point of overlapping. That said, you can always replace the book abilities with the bookmark abilities. I have included a brief and copyright respectful...

RPG Crowdfunding News – Earthdawn, Wicked Ones, The Strapping Lads, Vigilante City 2, and more

That is why we have DMs/GMs. I tend to treat RPGs as cinema, not simulation.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking defenseless NPCs

I tend to run my games in more of a narrative and cinematic way, using mechanics to adjudicate situations where either the player or circumstance invoke them. Given that you are describing a classic cinematic scene where the highly skilled character silently dispatches a sentry with a well...

    Sidekicks instead of Extra Attack?

The sidekick rules work great as employees that a franchise gets in the new Acquisitions Incorporated book! You can select one to accompany your party on jobs, and use the sidekick rules to automate them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Acquisitions Incorporated Takes Over D&D: A Review

There is a great new race, several interesting new backgrounds, and great ways to add evolving mobile headquarters to a campaign. All things to consider if you haven't seen them.

Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!

This is an example of the uselessness of alignment systems. Most people choose CG because it is basically the same as no alignment. You can be flexible with regard to laws and rules as you seek to adhere to whatever social normatives you give your character.

D&D 5E (2014) The Final Announcement from The Descent Live Stream: Eberron Hardcover

Just thought I would add my opinion to the mix. I am very HAPPY! I love the way WotC is producing their books right now, and will be buying the Eberron book for sure (As someone who also bought WGtE). I honestly do not care what they put out next (though I am like most people hoping for...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

You could be right, I have been known to make mistakes and I do run my games in a certain way. I would argue that the results of the poll suggest that my interpretation is more in line with the default at most peoples tables. All of that said, I will defend my position a bit with actual rulebook...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

The player always determines what the character thinks, does, and says, EXCEPT when those things are determined by the rules or the DM. They are always bound by the results of checks (or do players in your game simply disbelieve damage and hits away?). A DM can choose to disregard the outcome of...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

The point of the topic, and the discussion I was having with ElfCrusher, is the use of the Perception skill in detecting lies. My stance is that once a player uses the skill he is bound by the results, and should not simply be free to act otherwise by invoking player agency. The use of this...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

The DM narrates the adventure AND arbitrates the rules. Failure isn't always fun, but it still happens sometimes. Failure exists to give success meaning in the game, and to provide environmental feedback which can lead to learning. That said, I am unclear as to why you would equate having rules...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

To example 1. If the player is playing a specifically tactically minded class as incompetent I would ask for some explanation or role playing reason for this. If they are just not very good at playing that type of character it is no big deal as the rules are built into the class and the fluff is...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

I am a bit late, and so I have missed what looks like a rather nasty turn to what started off as a nice topic. That said, I wanted to address Elfcrusher's analysis of my statements. You are correct in that I am stating a character's perceptions of the situation should be dictated for the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why did they design Demiplane to suck?

Wouldn't it be easier, and more in line with what you want, to use a completely different spell? This spell isn't about creating your own pocket world, it is about accessing storage. It works great for what it is. If you want to build your own extra-plane kingdom just use Plane shift, find a...

Should Insight be able to determine if an NPC is lying?

This is a problem endemic to role playing games in general. If an in game deception occurs, an in game response that is separate from the player must also occur. The player is still free to determine how their character would act on their revelation.
