    Campaign Length

My players play their characters until either they die or they choose to retire them. For the most part, by the time their PCs have a significant history, they also have significant impact on the setting so there is always something to do. As a DM, I might have a story arc that lasts years but...

Countdown to the Realms: Magic in the Forgotten Realms

I know I'll buy 4e, don't know if I'll run it because I am quite fond of True20, but if I do I can see myself running a campaign on FR. My last campaign stopped with the PCs at 18-20th level due to time constraints but they were all endowed with supernatural longevity during the story and would...

The Soul of and Drama in D&D

I recall playing the Dragonlance Saga in 1e. 1e was not, in my opinion, a terribly sophisticated game and the rules had some really wonky, arbitrary nonsense in them. Despite that, 1e Dragonlance was (and actually still may be) the most memorable campaign I ever ran. My players and myself lived...

Countdown to the Realms: Magic in the Forgotten Realms

I like the Realms and have, over the years ran multiple multi-year long campaigns there and I am 200% behind these changes. I am glad to see the world more tortured, devastated and ripe for heroes to save the innocent from the wicked. Good stuff...good stuff. Wyrmshadows

Falling Damage - Anyone else hopes falling hurts just a little bit more?

To put it plainly, who gives a flying fig what the official rules say in regards to orbital reentry or falling headlong into a crevasse full of molten lava. If you are running a game as a DM, you tell your players that there are certain, maybe only a few, things that will kill them instantly...

    The Death of Simulation

Gods YES!!!!! :D I've been running D&D games for years from this perspective and interestingly enough my campaign was never considered unfun. I now run True20 and am learning Runequest and may or may not run 4e depending on the final rules. No doubt there will be 3rd party support for of a...

Opinion: PoL and high tiers do not fit in the long run

I am not saying that gaining levels requires it. However, the PCs would probably have to live in a bubble if they made it to level 10 without quite a number of folks hearing of them let alone levels 20+. I agree, that being a hero is necessarily tied to level, its just that higher level people...

Opinion: PoL and high tiers do not fit in the long run

I sense an exaggeration of the effect even epic PCs have on a setting. Any setting, any setting with depth anyway, has a diversity of potential allies and enemies for any group of heroes from levels 1-30. There are other good guys in the setting who are exceedingly powerful if there are bad guys...

Opinion: PoL and high tiers do not fit in the long run

Definately differing gaming styles. One camp (the camp I am in) says that high level characters are heroes because of what they have done and receive the benefits of that heroism in ways beyond merely leveling up and collecting more powers. In this style the characters gain titles, lands...

    D&D 4E Former 4E doubter , I have high hopes now

Don't see this at all. Recognizable to the players is not recognizable to the characters unless the characters have encountered said creature before. There is no meta-gaming at my table so memorizing a monster manual won't save you. If I catch someone overtly and shamelessly metagaming I will...

    Abstract HP

QFT QFT QFT There are too many exceptions to the hand wavey "Oh, HPs are just abstract" excusemaking for what is fundamentally a system tracking a character's mortality that is very, very flawed. I have encountered lots of situations over the years like these above and these kinds of situations...

    D&D 4E Former 4E doubter , I have high hopes now

However, this isn't the 4e SUPPORT forum. This is the 4e discussion forum. Trolling isn't a good thing, but I think rabid fanboism is equally irksome. Not saying that there is any of that in this thread, just making a general point. Wyrmshadows

    D&D 4E Former 4E doubter , I have high hopes now

I was THRILLED by the news of the release of 4e. I was THRILLED by the dismantling of the Great Wheel, mechanical alignment effects, more solid differentiation between demons and devils, 30lvls of play without a clumsy epic system, dumping pseudo-Greyhawk as the core setting and other things. I...

    Abstract HP

It's quite easy to understand really. I DM a campaign, and have for a looong time, that takes exceptionally gifted folks (reflected in good stats) who are still mortal, mundane and non-magical and sets them loose in a world that contains the fantastic. They are themselves mortals even if they...

    Gold or Silver Standard?

Silver Standard 100%. I have always been bothered by senseless D&D economics. For gold to have any value it must be more rare. Who the heck would value a gold necklace when it isn't really more valuable than couple of gold coins. That whole "It's only D&D so that kind of stuff isn't important"...

D&D 4E What Kinds of Settings do You Want to See for 4E?

QFT :) Thematic...that's what I was getting at. Thematic settings where things are integrated one with another so it all works as a believable whole. Wyrmshadows

D&D 4E What Kinds of Settings do You Want to See for 4E?

What type of settings, from vanilla fantasy like Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk (pseudo-european with knights, maidens, Tolkien tropes and standard D&Disms), quite distinctive fantasy like Midnight, Conan D20 (referring to the Hyborian setting and not the variant rule set) and Dawnforge or...

    D&D 4E Reinvisioning the Halfling for 4E

So we have gone from FrodoOD&D/1e/2e to Lidda in 3e which was a HUGE change from the D&D/Tolkien tropes of fantasy. However, giving halflings dreadlocks and making them riverfolk is wildly unacceptable? I don't quite understand the controversy. Wyrmshadows

New FR Dragon Article: The Wailing Dwarf. Reveals some new crunch.

I have to agree with you. I understand why folks build the groups they do, but as a DM I am more comfortable with an organic type of group that are friends or mercenaries familiar with each other and drawn together by whatever circumstances and/or desires. This group IMO would only rarely look...
