The Celestial Empire (Romance of the Three Kingdoms-ish, Updated 12/09/05)

I hope they realize that given the China-influenced setting, it might not be so simple. A levitating body may be scary, but a defunct high-ranking noble who comes back from the afterlife to partecipate to his own funeral will elicit a different response; who is going to tell the public which...

    Swift and Immediate Actions?

What FireLance said; free actions are "in your turn only, no hard limit"; in the core rules, the only two exceptions are (A) quickened spells and (B) Feather Fall and can be stated only once (under the Quicken Spell feat and FF spell description, respectively). With the Miniature's Handbook...

    Swift and Immediate Actions?

A longer definition: A Swift Action works like a free action, except that it has an hard limit of only one swift action per round. Casting a quickened spell is a swift action. An Immediate Action works like a swift action, except that you can use it out of your turn, even in response to an...

    DeathWatch: Why is it evil?

I have issues with this line of reasoning; casting a good spell isn't a good act; it just carries an intrinsic good component. The overall value of the act must still take into account intent and result: the alignment descriptor is just one of the factors and the rules do not even define how...

    DeathWatch: Why is it evil?

To put it simply, it is evil because the designers chose to give it an evil flavor; the effect of a spell and the purpose it's used for aren't the only weights on its moral value, as they don't describe the inner workings. From a mechanical standpoint, Glimpse of Truth isn't unlike other...

    Skill Boost Items (Complete Adventurer)

Consider that between Diplomacy, Bluff and Perform (sing), you are unlikely to use more than one in the same encounter, which one depending on your social approach; Spot and Search OTOH can come along together quite often. Of course YMMV. ;)

Would you allow this paladin in your game? (new fiction added 11/11/08)

I would readily allow him (barring of course special circumstances like setting-specific costraints or having a 12 years old player at the table). First, I find nothing in the code of conduct that conflicts with the description above; now, should he get drunk and harm innocents in a bar brawl...

    Warlock Pre-Errata.

OMG! A first-level spell-like ability that breaks the damage cap! It must be broken!!! :p On a more serious tone, Mr. Baker has just saved us from a lot of arguments about metamagic feats for spell-like abilities and how they apply to eldritch blast. Thanks Go... ahem, Baker.

    Skill Boost Items (Complete Adventurer)

    If the bonuses are counted as similar abilities, the price is about right. +10 skill bonus: 10^2 x 100 gp = 10000 gp 2nd similar ability: 10000 x 75% = 7500 gp 3rd similar ability: 10000 x 50% = 5000 gp Total: 22500 gp (I guess it's a slotted item - does it count as a necklace?) If anything...

Pearl of Power -- use activated?

I would say it requires a command word, but YMMV. ;)

The Celestial Empire (Romance of the Three Kingdoms-ish, Updated 12/09/05)

Time for questions from fans. :p What happened to Chou's father? Did I miss a key scene or did he just cease to be mentioned after a point?

    Sudden metamagic and item creation

It's likely the best solution. Consider this: compared to regular metamagic, sudden metamagic feats offer metamagic on the fly without slot level or casting time increase and pay for it with the 1/day limit; but if you make a scroll of sudden maximized fireball you can't really apply the...

    Warlocks & Familiars...

I stand corrected about the warlock; however I would like to point out that having one's levels stack for the purpose of getting the familiar isn't a separate feature: it's part and parcel of having a familiar. Anyway, I agree with other posters that a familiar wouldn't be worth two feats...

    Warlocks & Familiars...

Not really; the feat doesn't require spellcasting, only an arcane caster level, which warlocks have aplenty. Levels from classes who grant a familiar already stack with each other; the feat just allows the remaining arcane classes to join the club.

    Warlocks & Familiars...

Put it this way: normally, only classes who grant you a familiar count toward your level as a familiar master; if you take the feat, all your arcane classes count as granting a familiar.

    [Lesser] Orbs of X: surefire?

They still require a ranged touch attack; plus, they can be stopped by energy resistance/immunity. So you have 1d4+1 (average 3.5) stopped only by shield and that can hit ethereal foes vs. 1d8 (average 4.5) which can be nullified by cover, concealment, high touch AC and energy protections.

    Sorcerer vs. Warmage

In my experience, the biggest weakness of the Sorcerer isn't the limit on spell known or the lack of other class features, but the widely held assumption that those spell known should be filled with blasting spells; not to mention that blasting is overrated, considering that monster HPs inflate...

Dimension X-The Man in the High Castle

It isn't a campaign and I never managed to plan a campaign based on it, but I've always found the backstory of The Longest Journey PC game extremely fascinating in its mix of sci-fi, fantasy and secret history.
