D&D 4E Why do weapons have different damage in 4e?

I've always liked the idea of "weapons as special effects." Someone created some very good houserules for that and posted them here on ENWorld. If I can dig it up, I'll post it when I get home from work. Essentially, all weapons dealt static damage based on the character's class (and feat...

Excerpt: Minions. Go forth mine minions! Bring havoc with your 1 hp [merged]

Seems to me that if he is more well known for the axe, then he's probably using the axe more often than not. If he's using the dagger more, then he'd probably be well known for that. So most times he uses an axe. Sometimes a dagger. I honestly don't understand what's wrong with that.

To put it a little differently, protecting one's family might be a Good act, but it is not that one act alone that makes them a Good person. For me, the fuzzier the better. As long as it doesn't break down the mechanical system, I'll be ignoring alignment entirely.

    The new point-buy?

Re: characters with stats lower than 8 - Stats, specifically mental stats, are difficult to equate with real world analogies. There's far too many minutiae related to human physical and mental structure that can be translated into 6 different stats for a roleplaying game. But I'm of the...

Excerpt: Minions. Go forth mine minions! Bring havoc with your 1 hp [merged]

If the PCs have small children on their side, clearly the balance of encounter difficulty has changed. Therefore, more minions would be appropriate for sufficiently large numbers of children.

... if the AOE hits every minion. Since one has to roll an attack roll for each creature in the effect, that should make that an unlikely outcome. Combine this with dynamic encounter areas, and I doubt we're going to see all minions swallowed up in a single fireball.

Rogue powers, sneak attack and weapon selection

You're absolutely right. That said, there are a few preview powers that grant combat advantage in some way or another. Combine that with powers that grat status afflications, and it seems like there's lots of potential for Combat Advantage to happen. That said, we won't really know until lots...

    When did you enjoy 3.x?

Well, your conclusion isn't the necessary outcome. I think a lot of people never liked 3rd edition, and some of them believe that 4e will solve the problems they saw in 3e. That said, I still like 3.x. It's an excellent system and there is a great wealth of material out there to enjoy. It is...

A feat every four levels? I don't think that's correct. From this: That's basically a feat every other level, and seems to imply a 14th level character has more than seven feats.

    D&D 4E No evil gods in 4e?

Yes, absolutely. But why is it necessary to pigeonhole them into a type with two little letters?

    D&D 4E No evil gods in 4e?

Batman transcends rational understanding of any alignment system. The best way I could put it, is that Batman is all alignments. But even that presents a severely limited understanding of him.

    Iconics ...

There's this human cleric that seems to have popped up more than once. He's dark skinned with a bald head with a braided patch of hair on the back of his head. He's shown up in (I think) Race's and Classes and the Quest Reward excerpt.

Hiding the PHB from players - Cool or Restrictive?

Hiding the Player's Handbook... from players? Huh?

    I miss CG

Not going to read this whole thread. But I just wanted to say that alignment should've been ditched outright. That's really the best (the only?) way to get an open spectrum of alignments.

May '08 What are you reading?

I like it. It's very sad and bleak, but McCarthy is a fantastic writer and has wonderful things to say. If you like his other books it's worth reading.

Honestly, a merchant campaign sounds pretty cool to me.

Excerpt: You and Your Magic Items

I don't really see the problem. If you ask me, any given gamer can turn just about anything into a joke. If my players find it humorous I'll just roll with it and move on. Or stop giving them Flaming Weapons (which, if you ask me, has much more potential to become a groan inducing phrase)...

    It's interesting to see...

Well, I still like 3e (although 3.5 irritated me because there were so many miniscule changes that I felt like I was no longer familiar with the rules). If I played nothing but 3rd edition for the next 15 years, I'd be a pretty happy camper. I don't see myself running 3rd edition again...
