Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

It was an example of a class whose powers are entirely geared for melee. I know that. No. Based on what we've seen, that's what his powers are geared towards. A 4e warlord can fire a bow just as well as a 3e barbarian. That was my point. As I said before, one might've had a problem with...

    D&D 4E 4e Playtesters revealed!

Terence Thambipillai, you lied to me this whole time!

    pawsplay's dealbreaker list

Eh, he's not just posting his thoughts, he's negative language and in some cases rather ridiculous hyperbole to make his point. Maybe that's not whining, but it sure ain't a logical argument, nor does it promote discussion (I'd argue that it shuts it down before it starts, actually). That...

    Aaron's Mealmaker List

This is great. I just want to say, in before the lock.

Now who's misrepresenting? Based on what we've seen, the warlord seems no more forced into melee than the 3e barbarian. Perhaps you have a problem with that too, but this is not anything new. Having a class that does a specific thing well is a-ok with me.

You're disappointed that you can model a Leonidas-type character? If you're disappointed that Leonidas is the only archetype that fits the warlord, fear not! There are in fact other character types that fit the warlord quite nicely. They don't even have to be in the military!

Fair enough, "complaint" was a poor word choice. My mistake. Still, it is a rather strange thing to mention, considering the legacy of the game is based around this paradigm, 4th edition aside.

Right. The complaint about monsters being more powerful than PCs is... strange. I'm really not sure how I could personally address it. If there are not monsters more powerful than PCs, then PCs will experience fewer and fewer challenges past 1st level. "Badass PCs" and "Challenging...

Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

I'm definitely assuming that the :melee: means the same thing in all instances. I don't think we'll really know until we have the books in hand, and can reference exactly what these symbols mean. But so far, every instance of :melee: means it's a melee attack. I'm not convinced Commanding...

Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

:bmelee: = basic melee attack :melee: = melee attack You'll notice in the stablock you quoted it says "Standard :melee: " Which means it requires a standard action, and is a melee attack. The warlord has to be in melee range to activate the power. Edit: let me put it another way - just as...

Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

The warlord "attacks" the target in that he opens up the enemy for his ally's strike. It looks like there's no attack roll except for the ally's, and the warlord deals no damage except for the bonus he provides to his ally.

Whining on the boards and rule zero

Generally, the feeling around here is that "Just use Rule 0" does not really address the problem at hand. It's not always easy to just ignore or change rules; the former can have consequences on other parts of the game, while the latter can be just plain difficult (game design is not easy). As...

Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

You might've missed it, but a few posts before this one I corrected the first statement you quoted. :) Because the :melee: symbol is part of the statblock, which means its a special melee attack on the part of the Warlord. The basic attack from an ally is the effect.

D&D 4E 4e playtest report...my effort to convert our group

4e is basically an action movie. When did Legolas ever shoot Aragorn in the rump? It's not stupid; it's stylistic. DnD does not mimic reality in any many appreciable fashion, nor does it attempt to. A rule has been change to better suit the genre's style. That does not remove risk or...

Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

Huh... yeah, I didn't notice that before. I'm going to have to get used to looking at the symbols. Reading the text, I originally thought it was just line of sight to your ally, but it looks like the Warlord player has to be in :melee: range to use the power as well. It's like this power was...

Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

I think the answer to that is dependent on the sneak attack rules. From the rogue preview a few months back: I think it depends on the Rogue. If he's opted to use sneak attack this round, then it's not going to apply whe the Warlord issues a commanding strike. If not, then sure, rack up the...

Warlord At-Will Powers level 1 via June Preview

It's not for a front-line warlord, I don't think. If you prefer mixing it up in melee with the Fighter, you're probably not going to be interested in this power. Personally, I think it's cool. I think everybody wins. The warlord player gets to act out his battlefield commander role and...

Personally, I think it's a mistake. The other orcs operate on the ability mod + 1/2 level for initiative. There is a structured system, but there is also variance within that system. Which is fine; two monsters of equal CR were not necessarily of equal difficulty in 3.x. I see no reason why...
