D&D General Have you ever chosen not to accept resurrection?

Once. The PC was a (otherwise) silent Barbarian who sung Opera when he raged. They looted a viking funeral barge and he was knocked unconscious by a treasure mimic. The PCs had slain (burned) the (undead) occupant so when the valkyries arrived to take the boat to Valhalla the PC's dying body...

D&D 5E (2014) What are your biggest immersion breakers, rules wise?

Grappling. Anything underwater. I always have to look it up, and I'm always disappointed and annoyed. The pages of flowchart we used in Pathfinder were terrible, and 5E isn't any better (mostly because it makes grappling so weak).

    Catra Season 4

The one and only show I've unironically suggested people watch because it is "fabulous." I mean, Catra has style. Wit. Strength. A terrific villainous foil in the magazine-perfect blond barbie clone oppressing her. Full package.

D&D 5E (2014) Just Me, or Are Kobold Press Deep Magic Options Very Unbalanced?

I've run a few sessions with NPCs from Demon Cults & Secret Society's which caused me to dig up some of my old Deep Magic pdfs. Yeah, I don't care about strict "balance." They're incredibly flavorful and cool because they really stand out from using PHB spells. As a DM I can forgive a little...

RPG Evolution: RPGs Have a Health Problem

I don't see how this market is much different than art, or performance in that there are many many more really talented people who are driven to create than there are people driven to pay full price for value. I walk into a Morton Arboretum (a non-profit taken over by MBA parasites but that's...

    D&D 5E (2024) Interested in new dragon designs for 5e (5.5e or 6e)?

He talks about it a little in Eye of the Beholder too. Him and Sam (Wood?) went back and forth and built up their design from bones through musculature, etc... I think the care they put into the design shows. Lockwood dragons are distinct even when drawn by artists of wildly varying talents...

    D&D 5E (2024) Interested in new dragon designs for 5e (5.5e or 6e)?

Honestly couldn't disagree more. I like the Lockwood dragons are head and shoulders better than nearly anything before or since. I mean, come on, the nasty skull-like blacks, the wicked blues, the dumb brutal whites... That said, there is some room to improve. The green dragon stands out as...

Face Unending Horror to Prove Your Mettle: Experience Never Going Home

I'm glad this got a write up. Kickstarted and really enjoyed how it was put together. A good example of mechanics supporting atmosphere. WWI trench warfare was horrid enough, but to really make it resonate you need something extra at the table. This game does that in spades.

D&D General DnD Stereotypes In The Home Game

An interesting trope that no one has brought up is the undead. I threw my PCs for a total loop in my last (3 year campaign) when they encountered a lawful good paladin... vampire. They had recruited a (previously full) demigod to help them "free" a village under the dominion of the vampire...

D&D General DnD Stereotypes In The Home Game

I generally DM with a smidge of the "stereotypes" because it is a common language and expectation that players have across a broad range of ages. Lots of basis for drama. Subverting tropes also works better if you generally use them. More stories that way. Personally I love playing haughty...

TSR When Random House Sued TSR For $9.5M

Another edition of Business Wile E. Coyote. Someone will find a way to hang the company if good practice isn't enforced throughout all financial and contractual dealings. Reminds me of several 90s tech companies that got complacent with temporary market dominance while putting MBA folks in...

D&D 5E (2014) New Eberron Minis: Skycoach, Lord of Blades, Dinos

Whelp, never thought I'd be ordering a case again... But an official skyship? I've been trying to psych myself up to mod one up for ages =) In other news, apparently there is a set coming out based on Volo's and Mordenkainen? Did I miss a release announcement on Enworld?

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Wall of Faithless in 5e?

That's exactly what Myrkul (an evil git for sure) did. He declared those souls as stateless and tortured them out of existence. I'm trying to remember, but I thought Kelemvor's motivation to ascend was because he was so unhappy with Myrkul's attitude. Also all the general weirdness with Cyric.

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Wall of Faithless in 5e?

The Gods are obviously real, they're obviously super powerful, and they make no bones about being in charge of what happens to you after you die. If the Gods are remotely like people, you can imagine they wouldn't look to kindly on mortal souls who deny them. Being an atheist or agnostic in...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

Nothing wrong (other than its fit in an organized recurring social activity like D&D). I object when someone claims it is the only CN. For example, I don't think CN necessarily dislikes "plans" as much as "planning." A CN would definitely be angry if they deviated from the "plan" in the...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

I've had one player who fell on the CN spectrum as described and wasn't ejected from my game. I'd say the 5E CN still works well for barbarian chieftains (see: the PHB suggests CN for barbarians), etc. So... D&D is the game you allow at your table? This kind of CN sucks, because it promotes...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

Eek. Not asking the easy question are you =) I've always seen TN as an NPC alignment or at best someone really challenging themselves. Either you don't care much about things one way or another because you're a peasant trying to grow enough carrots not to starve in the winter, or on the other...

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

Another chaotic/lawful test: Would you stop at a red light at midnight with no one in sight (no cameras, etc.) Drow would definitely NOT stop. Devils definitely would (should). Neutrals would consider their options.

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

I agree with Celebrim that published materials have poor discipline in terms of the "alienness" of extraplanar strongly aligned creatures. I lean a lot on the alienness of my supernatural NPCs and I'd like to think my players' reactions confirm that I do a descent job. That drow are evil is...
