    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Exactly why I'm still worried even taking the combos into account.

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Slightly worried about this myself. The nasty combos that people are coming up with for the War Devil and then discarding as unfair actually give me hope though. As unfair as the Devil combos might seem, I'm sure epic characters can come up with some things that are worse.

Yeah, again, I think this has to do with what Charm and Dominate used to mean causing a bit of static in the line. They're a keyword (Charm) and a status (Dominated) now. I hope that the definition for the dominated status is very specific and very flavorless so whatever fluff works for the...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

Good point, and perhaps why the entry seems so confusing. Dominate and Charm both have a fair bit of baggage as words.

Actually, I see the kiss without a dominated victim as more of a "OH GOOD HEAVENS WHY DO I KEEP THROWING MYSELF IN THE WAY?!" sort of control effect. Running away from it is perfectly acceptable because its an insane compulsion/magical effect and without the dominate, it feels like it too...

    Roles are so LIMITING!

You too huh? Wonder how many WoW refugees 4th edition is actually going to absorb, I already know quite a few.

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

The math breaks about when the monsters start jumping categories. A level 5 standard and a level 1 elite both cost 200 XP. The level 5 standard will be less interesting for the PCs to fight because it will get fewer actions and the PCs will miss more often, meaning a more protracted but...

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

It is slightly strange that the at-will claw of the War Devil only does 1d6 + 8. I suppose it can technically use it's trident power approximately 50% of the time, and the damage from that seems a fair bit closer to what I expect from a level 22 monster. Oh, and Fiendish Tactics seems like it...

Pit fiends have had some serious fang nerfing over the years I have to say.

Will DMs Need to Plan the PC Strategy?

There are playstyles where there is no such thing as a "broken" encounter. Likewise, one cannot abuse powers. Of course, such playstyles, as I think Gene pointed out, tend to require very specific things for everyone at the table to have a good time as they're not very compatible with...

    Dragonborn Info

Just because he can. No, seriously, something therapeutic about officially house ruling out something that you were never going to use. Like blowing up something you don't use any more. It's just fun and it makes you feel like you own the system :)

Easilly assembled encounters, more character driven adventures?

The touted "easier to DM" feature got my attention as well. But in my case it's because I want to trade off DMing and no one else in my group feels up to the job with the current batch of systems. So I can point at that and at least get someone else to *try* running it.

    Dispel Magic

I agree completely with this point. But the moment that I see a completely non-magical martial ability with the zone or conjuration keyword is when I will see what connection this point has to 4th edition. If zones and conjurations are only ever attached to magic, then one can hardly say that...

Tome of Treasures becomes Adventurer's Vault

Blank? Man, I was hoping at least for "HAHAHAHA" printed over and over. Must be saving on ink :(

    D&D 4E Mage hand in 4e: what's the deal?

Anyone know how exactly the sustain clause works? When do you pay the cost? At the very start of your turn? The end? Are there other effects from sustaining it? Does it effectively recast the spell? If it does recast the spell, when does that happen? Right when you pay the cost or whenever you...

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

Agreed. When I said play styles, I wasn't referring to GNS specifically, even though I had mentioned it just the sentence before. I mean the essence that GNS is apparently attempting to categorize and define, and makes much more static sounding then it actually is. Oh, yeah, that. EXACTLY. :D...

    R. Thompson : D&D still a sim/gamist RPG

Well dang it. I normally really, really hate doing this, but it's true. lol There, I said it. You nearly made me fall out of my chair laughing. Anyway, yeah. What's with all the focus on the GNS terms? Can't D&D support many different playstyles successfully? Did someone crack some law of the...

    Pathfinder 1E Paizo being mysterious

Count me and my friends in this group as well. 3rd was fun for a bit, then it eventually just felt like too much work to run a game for not enough reward, mostly from number and calculation bloat at the higher levels.
