Deck of Many Things Horror Stories

Find X A+B+C+D=X where A= Kender played by me. B= Deck of many things. C= DM foolish enough to give a party containing a kender a deck of many things. D= Bar full of backwoods yokels.

Rules for Rogues using Hide and Sneak

In the situation you described the rogue should almost always get sneak attack. A long spear wielding rogue is the melee god of mass combat. Unless of course the other side maintains tight formations (i.e. fireball fodder.)

    Inconsistant/Arbitrary rules...

1E: Exceptional strength. Why only strength and not dexterity? And why such a massive difference between an 18 and a 17? It almost made an 18 strength a requirement to play a fighter. No 18? Thief it is. Not to mention how much races with strength bonuses threw everything out of whack...

From 4E to GURPS: D&D and Simulationism

I've actually wanted to try GURPS for years, but finding a group is far more difficult than finding a DND group. One problem I do have with GURPS is it seems there just aren't enough character points to build a well rounded character. Every time I try to build a character, there just aren't...

    Disbelieving Invisibility?

I'm not allowing invisibility to be saved against either, yet. But now that someone has brought the question up I definitely see the logic of there being a saving throw. If something happened that made it obvious that magical silence might be at work, yes I would. The reason I think there...

What Makes One System Better Than Another?

I agree with Wombat. If I want to slap on a loincloth, pick up a broadsword, and wade through rivers of blood I want Conan D20. If I want a sleek sci-fi game, Alternity. If I want a solid fantasy game without super-powered characters I want E6. If I want a solid game for buckling a swash...

    Disbelieving Invisibility?

There's no question that RAW there is no save for disbelieve. I question whether or not this is a good rule. Once an invisible creature begins interacting with the world (such as picking up a vase) it makes sense to me that there should be a save.

    Disbelieving Invisibility?

You know, I've never thought about it but maybe you should be able to disbelieve. It's not like the character really vanishes, he's still there. It's the same basic principle as silent image.

How to prevent time wasting in a session?

Egg timer. When the egg timer goes ding the character is officially holding his action until after the next character/monster goes.

    Cap Skills for d20

Alternity was a little different. You either had a broad skill or you did not have a broad skill, there were no skill ranks. Once you purchased a broad skill you could start purchasing ranks in the skills that are part of the broad skill (i can't remember what they called these narrower...

    Central Casting

You'd think that given the prices people are willing to pay for the original, they would release the Central Casting books on PDF. I've been looking for a resonably priced copy myself for years.

    Medieval Demographics Made Easy

Hm, these numbers seem a little off to me. Booksellers should be few and far between, if they existed at all.

    Midnight impressions

That article takes an extremely narrow view of coinage. Currency has existed from the very beginnings of civilization, counters and ingots being used to represent large amounts of grain. If you want to highlight the difference between early currency and coinage that's fine, but the midnight...

    Midnight impressions

I like the feel of Midnight, and the magic system. But there's a lot that doesn't make sense. One is coinage being outlawed and their entire economy being based upon the barter system. Despite this there are still huge cities and inn's remain open. This economy is simply impossible.

Help me with my rules revisions - Part 1 - Jumping

If the disparity in die rolls bothers you, you could just roll 3d6 instead of 1d20. Same average but heavily weighted towards the center.

Help me with my rules revisions - Part 1 - Jumping

The guy who rolled the 2 obviously stumbled. What's the problem? The problem for me is the ridiculous distances that can be covered with a 40 pound pack on their back.

[Forked Thread: The 3.5 renaissance!] Three Years in the future - What will WotC do?

I'll give you the complete book of elves, they turned elves into supermen. Then again, all the abilities gained in the complete elves would also apply to any elf characters already in existence. The kits available weren't any better than kits in previous books, and neither were any of the...

[Forked Thread: The 3.5 renaissance!] Three Years in the future - What will WotC do?

It looks to me like 4e is going to ultimately fail, and I think Hasbro's going to just drop DND. Hopefully they sell it, but they might just let the name collect dust. That's exactly what they did with 3e. The material released towards the end of 3e was just more powerful than what was...
