Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

Yeah, as much as two people coming to the conclusion that save-or-die works fine for them from very different points of view indicates that the mechanic is perfectly suitable for a wide variety of playing styles, and that only corner cases of "I want my character to be unkillable" will find it...

    Educated guess on Multi-Classing

Good call..combining class levels by power source is an interesting method for multiclassing. Sounds like a workable idea. :)

    Educated guess on Multi-Classing

I guess everybody has a different line where his suspension of disbelief stops, Henry. Depending on the setup, I can take somebody pick up first level in a class that was supposed to be years of training, apprenticeship and study, and do so on the fly. But accepting that, because he's spent the...

    Educated guess on Multi-Classing

The problem with the flat 50% rate is that it works okay for a multiclass character who keeps both class levels close to each other, but looks very wonky on somebody who has greatly different class levels in his classes. A fighter 8/wizard 8 who fights respectively casts as a 12th level...

    Educated guess on Multi-Classing

Which would make so no sense, to add half your fighter levels to the magic prowess of a wizard. Implying that every class takes cross-training courses with other classes just so that you can add half its level to that of any other class in a multiclass option sounds really far off to me, and...

    Points of Light

Thread unseen, I'd probably grab my old Karameikos Gazetteer, and start a group in the hills of Threshold, maybe with the adventure from the Basic Set DMG as a trial run. Somehow that old classic always works for me to introduce people to adventure. :D

D&D 4E What 4E class do you most want to try out?

Wizard. :D Has been my first class while it was still called magic-user, my longest-running character was a wizard, and I simply like the magic. Would be curious how the whole new system plays out. :)

It's equally funny how both analogies are limping on both legs so badly that I'm not sure they really help making a point in the first place. Points of view, hm?

For example. :) But even a slightly lower-level adventure could start with somebody hiring the group to go into the dungeon of Thrax the Defiler and retrieve the Tear of Gaia, but to beware the Garden of Silent Screams unless you want to become part of the menagerie. From there, research and...

And then there's actually people who try to explain their point of view on a topic, and how they arrived there, to their fellow gamers in order to create an exchange of opinions instead of simply mocking those with a different opinion than their own.

Yep, in mine (3.0) they are in the table for Dungeon level 9, with a 10% chance of encounter. Not going to repeat my rant about how they took out the background info and generalized a special use monster again. But it goes to show what can happen when game designers try to fit everything in D&D...

Uhm...seeing as the last wizard I played ran around with a Con of 11 for all of his career, and did pretty okay with that...allow me to disagree. :) They simply kill the target? I mean, you can make it out to be stilling the heart, brain aneurism, whatever you prefer. Basically, they snuff out...

Two Weeks and Counting -- November 2nd!

Huh, that's typical! For years, you deny that you're working on a new edition, and then you spring it on us out of the blue! Foul, I say! New technologies? What's that for? Limited compatibility with my 5 years old stuff? You're trying to chase me away, right? What...we're not talking 4E...

If you quote me, do so correctly please. :) What I said was... Depending on the HD/combat ability, the same combat could as well take 15 rounds and 4 hours of real-time. I used 2-3 rounds combat time because that's the amount I personally prefer for a combat of a group vs. a single monster. A...

D&D 4E Why no beginner boxed set for 4E? [Set Confirmed in post 10]

Got to agree with thalmin here on the pre-genned characters...they are a great tool to get the kids to play the first adventure without the hassle of going through character creation. After that first adventure, you can still present them with the next batch of rules, i.e. character generation...

Not that I'm aware of..otherwise, Negative Energy Protection would help against spells such as Slay Living, Finger of Death, Destruction or Implosion and Cloudkill, the gaze of a bodak or the wail of a banshee. It doesn't, because those are all Death effects, not negative energy damage. Hmhmm...

How about I choose "Infrequent and under DM purview" instead of "Every X encounters". ;) Okay, apparently you're playing a game that's different from what I'm used to play, which probably explains the different points of view. 25 hit points is a friendly estimate for an 8th level wizard...

Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

That's mainly because I prefer to see HP as they are described in most editions of D&D I know, namely as the ability to withstand physical damage of one sort or another, and are mostly associated with getting hit with a weapon or a spell that causes physical damage. As such, I have no problem...

Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

Now you make it sound like the players have no choices at all, and cannot influence the course of the game up to the moment of that single die roll over the course of the game. So an encounter with a (for example) bodak doesn't net the characters anything but the right to continue adventuring...

From my point of view, you'd take one option away from me as DM, namely to create a monster that HAS the ability to kill at a glance. Those "other" threats are out there as well, all you'd do is take out one option from the pool. Don't get me wrong now, but that's one of the reasons why I was...
