D&D eXPerience: Core Mechanics (now compiled in 1st post!)

not finished reading the thread, but I had to comment on this one, as I find it...well, funny at least. I remember when 3.5 nerfed the Haste spell because it gave you an extra partial action and limited it to one more attack. Now 4E hands out extra actions with action points. Obviously, actions...

    My take.

Rapid Reload (3E version from Sword & Fist) "You can reload a hand crossbow or light crossbow as a free action that provokes an attack of opportunity. You may reload a heavy crossbow as a move equivalent action that provokes an attack of opportunity. You can use this feat once per round." I...

    D&D 4E 5th edition - 2015? Or is 4ed the last?

Yeah, but...but...which edition?? I don't want to spend the rest of my life being fully immersed in this newfangled 4E stuff! I'm very happy with a slightly houseruled version of Shadowrun 1E, I could grow old with that... ....what? :uhoh:

[Exploits] Ranger Daily: Split the Tree

I think it was Costner in his Robin Hood version who ripped off part of the fletching of two arrows, nocked and shot them as one, only to have them veer apart somewhen inbetween him and his targets. Could be faulty memory, though..but i'm sure I saw that scene somewhere. :) I'd not ascribe...

    Diagonals revisited

Well, that's the Primer, not the PHB...but it correlates squares with real-world measurements. Sorry for all those who hoped that all distances would be measured in the abstract "squares" unit. Apparently, one square in the D&D world still is 5 feet to the side. Seems we do have to deal with...

    Diagonals revisited

This I can get behind, yep. It's funny you mention this, because that was the impression I got from browsing the 1E DMG yesterday, too. Wasn't so much nostalgic as it was enlightening. I still prefer BECMI D&D from that period, though.

    Find the Anime Challenge

Huh? Where? Looks like a magical two-handed sword to me, with the aura of the sword making it look bigger than it is. Granted, it still could skewer the dragon from tummy to back with the right angle.

    Diagonals revisited

I don't think it's your reading skills, I think it is the way the books were written. I read over a friend's 1E DMG yesterday, and happened upon the chapter about illnesses and diseases and stuff. Back then, I found it a big curiosity that Gygax had taken the time to deal with one of the less...

D&D 4E Vote for your favorite 4E PHB cover!

Definitely #3. Come on, the game is called Dungeons & Dragons, not Dungeons & Dragonborn or Tunnels & Tieflings. The picture shows all essential elements to a classic D&D adventure...a group of intrepid adventurers confronting a dragon in a shady underground dungeon. This is the essence of D&D...

    Diagonals revisited

I don't know how versed you are in the details of classic movement rates...Basic D&D gave movement rates in the form of 120'(40'), which meant "120 feet per turn dungeon movement rate, 40 feet per round encounter movement rate". Note that all movement rates were given in feet, not in inches (I...

    Diagonals revisited

Oh, that's easy...it confirms to the fact that in a dungeon, your movement speed was reduced to a third due to you moving cautiously, carefully, and with an eye on traps, monsters in shadows and other dangers, all in a shadily illuminated surrounding and without a clear line of sight for more...

BECMI vs Rules Cyclopedia vs Castles & Crusades

If you have Crucible of Freya and plan to use it, maybe get the free The Wizard's Amulet as an introductionary adventure. And if you want some dungeon crawling afterwards, I can recommend looking for Tomb of Abysthor afterwards, as that is set in the general vincinity of Fairhill, and even has a...

    Diagonals revisited

Somehow I get this picture of an adventurer running like the devil's after him across the room, not heeding the orcs he passes and in turn getting kicked in the ass by each with an iron-capped boot so hard he gains some speed from each kick...and then, when he nearly reaches the target, his...

    Diagonals revisited

IF 4E really measures ALL distances and speeds in squares as measurements, it will nicely answer the question why it's, in my opinion, hopping one step closer to D&D - The Boardgame. I'm keeping up my optimism, though, that this won't happen. I'd hate to describe my character as "One and a...

    Diagonals revisited

How do you get to that conclusion? There is no penalty. Either way, you cover 30' per round. On the other hand, the 4E rule penalizes orthogonal movement, because you only get to move 30' per round, while you get to move 42' diagonally. At least that's how it looks to me. :) Or are we talking...

    Diagonals revisited

Maybe that's one of the new per encounter effects? You know...only comes into play once the battlemat is out.

BECMI vs Rules Cyclopedia vs Castles & Crusades

Depends on how you plan to introduce them, too, in my opinion. The Basic Set is great if you want to give your players the PHB and tell them "Go read this before we play next week". The mini adventures and very clear explanations of game terms help beginners to get into the game, and the next...

    Diagonals revisited

Wrong. In 3.X, a circle is treated as a circle of the specified radius. What is "approximated" is where in this circle a character is affected by the effect described by the circle. If the border of the effect includes the far corner of a square, everything within the square is affected, if only...

    Diagonals revisited

And this is the point where it won't be "easy" anymore to houserule 1-2-1-2 back into 4E. Also a point that shows that at least some parts of 4E won't easily work without the new 1-1-1-1 rule.

    The Inverse Trek Law?

Just posting to say that I'm 100% in agreement with you here! And since that seems to happen rarely, I felt I had to post about it. :D I loved 2E. Coming from BECMI D&D, which I loved as well, it was like an expansion. Customizable specialty priests (I STILL miss spheres!), expanded spell...
