    Why are you still here?

Why I'm still here? Well...I play D&D. Is there another reason? 4E is shaping up to be the next iteration of the game I've been playing for the last 20 years. I've got most editions from Mentzer and 1E forward on my shelves, alongside with some offshoots (Castles & Crusades, for example), I've...

    D&D 4E Mouseferatu weighs in on 4e

I couldn't help but read jonrog1's report, grab my old 1E MM, look inside and go "Yep, only the most important information that helps the DM to run the monster in combat, the rest got relayed by flavour text and his imagination"...and then have a good laugh at the total reverse design took in...

How I Stopped Worrying and Learned To Love Standard Plusses

Man, it is funny to see how EVERY edition of D&D will always find something to reduce back to Tolkien, whether the game fits the stories or not. Be it trying to stat out Gandalf as a magic-user, or be it now trying to compare a weird new rule to the Rings of Power. Sometimes I wonder if Prof...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

What amuses me in this thread is the number of people insisting that the ability of the Pit Fiend to summon allies (and in fact, as an elite monster, should be USED as if it was designed with allies in mind) is an asset, and a great idea...while looking back at the Rakshasa/Ogre Mage "redesign"...

    Morality of LG spellcasting

First off, I applaud the fact that your group sat down and discussed the consequences of their characters' choice of divine patron like that. :) About the choice of forbidden spells...I like it that you all included some based on the fluff rather than on any mechanical descriptors. Of course...

    D&D 4E The Blood War in 4E?

Well, looks like we'll simply have to agree to disagree...again. But at least I can see your point of view, and I hope you see mine, even if we don't agree on them. ;)

New article Design and Development Article on Magic Item Slots

Yep, sounds good on paper, doesn't it? I'll believe it when I see it 1 year after 4E has hit the market, and the predominant playing habits for that edition have formed and spread via the internet and virtual tabletop gaming. ;)

    D&D 4E The Blood War in 4E?

And that simply opens up the next (hypothetical) question...do demons and devils always have to be Evil? Or, for that matter, do Angels have to be Good all the time? Why not simply create a broad "Outsider" monster with a few tables that let you add abilities, immunities and vulnerabilities...

    D&D 4E The Blood War in 4E?

Right...the only thing that differentiated them was the fact that one was LAWFUL Evil and the other CHAOTIC Evil. Which basically means that 50% of their main motivations, behavioral patterns and beliefs were diametrally opposed to each other. Which in turn means... ...that their goals were...

    D&D 4E The Blood War in 4E?

Sorry Hussar, but from my perspective there IS no problem...seems my post didn't really bring that over the way I wanted. The point is, they aren't interchangeable, and I'm sure as hell not trying to "justify" anything  ...I'm looking at the different creatures the way I think they...

    D&D 4E The Blood War in 4E?

It's pretty interesting to see the views held by many about Law and Chaos, and their extraplanar expressions in Demons and Devils. To be honest, sometimes I get the impression that the predominant view is that Demons should be raving, uncoherent machines of violent destruction while Devils...

Best Character For A New Player?

Does he have any preferences, or ideas what kind of character he'd like to play in a pseudo-medieval fantasy environment? I find it good to build on the existing preferences, and then help the player to get around with his character during the game. :) If there are no preferences, I'd go with...

    D&D 4E The Blood War in 4E?

Which is, maybe, because the 2E stuff was written to be interesting and inspiring, while the 3E stuff was 80% written to be descriptive instead, which simply makes it read like a textbook with a few half-catchy sentences inbetween. That doesn't mean the 3E stuff was written by authors who don't...

Goodman Games' DDC writer Harley Stroh on Áereth

Or like one of the later Basic D&D adventures set in Thyatis, like DDA 1: Arena of Thyatis.

    2E vs 3E: 8 Years Later. A new perspective?

To answer the original question, I think 3E is a mixed bag when compared to 2E. I like the saving throws (they are more intuitive than the original set), the standardized system for problem resolution (I never had problems with the diverse subsystems in 2E, but I believe from what I read on...

    Some Additional Swashbuckling Cards

Great news! I guess those Swashbuckling Cards are your most successful creation in the end. I definitely get a kick out of using them, they beat any action point system hands down. :D

    Heh, nope.

    d6: pips or numbers?

For D&D? Always numbered dice. For Shadowrun, always pips.

    What were your 2e houserules?

Heh, from the top of my head, not THAT many... - Multi-classing and dual-classing were more liberated, available for anybody as long as it fit the class concept. - Non-weapon proficiencies were done according to the "Back in the Saddle" article from some Dragon issue I can't remember right...

    4th ED Vision of Mystara

As long as they adapt the ruleset to the campaign setting, and not the other way around? Why try to shoehorn dragonborn or tieflings into the setting when you have enough weird races to fill a whole sourcebook with alone? :) I don't think Mystara would need that many changes in the first place...
