    D&D 5E (2014) Gain 50 xp in the Abyss

Either system would work for me. But is it too much to ask for a WotC campaign book to spell out exactly how they want level progression to work? If they want a milestone system, then why are there xp awards?

    D&D 5E (2014) Gain 50 xp in the Abyss

There are two basic ways how a DM can give out xp and levels to his players: Either for each fight or other xp-worthy activity, or in some "milestone" system where reaching a certain point of the adventure gets the players to a predetermined level. Many of the official WotC campaign books are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Recommended D&D 5E YouTube channels?

I like watching YouTube videos of people playing 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons. It can be fun by itself, and sometimes it helps me as a DM to see how another DM and group tackled some scene from a published adventure. However I noticed that the production quality of D&D 5E YouTube videos varies...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you use Paladin "smite" spells if they were not concentration?

Your players must be using a very different play style than mine. Mine save Divine Smite for critical hits. Maybe a question of levels, the paladin in my campaign is level 4 and certainly doesn't "smite four times per round", having only one single attack per round, and 3 spell slots.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you use Paladin "smite" spells if they were not concentration?

I don't see the level 1 Paladin "smite" spells (Searing Smite, Thunderous Smite, Wrathful Smite) used very often. While they can be situationally good, the fact that they require concentration means they don't mix well with more standard spells like Bless or Compelled Duel. Fortunately the great...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic items for a moon druid

Would a magic item that allows a druid in wild shape to talk and cast spells be completely overpowered?

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic items for a moon druid

Socializing is a problem for moon druids. They only have a limited number of times they can use wild shape, so they often stay in animal form between combat encounters. And in animal form they can’t speak.

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic items for a moon druid

When handing out magic items in my campaign, I want them to feel useful and special, not random and occasionally useless. Thus for example I check what types of weapons my players can use before putting a magic weapon in a treasure hoard. And if one of my players is a lot weaker than the rest of...

D&D 5E (2014) How viable is 5E to play at high levels?

I think it is you who has trouble with reading comprehension. Can't you see the 6 pages full of posts saying high-level 5E needs modification to keep it challenging and can't be played right out of the box? Even you basically admitted it, by saying anybody who was trying to play the game...

D&D 5E (2014) How viable is 5E to play at high levels?

What I see is a whole thread of people giving me one of two answers: Either "high level play isn't viable in 5E" or "high level play is viable under the condition that you completely change the challenge ratings of the monsters". The "some people" who think it works just fine appear to be just...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Collection of Minor House Rules

Roll a d20 for encounters once per short rest, 4 times per long rest. On a roll equal or lower than the "danger level" of the surroundings, an encounter occurs. Danger level range from 1 for your average wilderness to 5 for the middle of a monster-infested dungeon. Resources used to fight these...

D&D 5E (2014) How viable is 5E to play at high levels?

Well, a game not working as intended out of the box for higher levels seems like a design flaw to me. Of course a DM has to tailor their game to their group all the time. But if the DM uses the encounter design rules from the book and they work from level 5 to 10, but don't give a good result...

D&D 5E (2014) How viable is 5E to play at high levels?

Looking at the published WotC adventures to date I noticed that most of them start at level 1 (or the main story starts at level 3-5, with a small adventure provided to get there from 1) and end between level 10 to 15. I don't see any adventures starting at level 10 to 15 and ending at 20. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

Outside of what the players see and know, the world in an RPG doesn't actually exist. Everything that exists in an RPG world is there for the benefit of the players, having been created by the DM with the effect on the players in mind. It follows rules of narrative, not rules of logic.

Looking for a war-themed low-level adventure or ideas

I imagine the players being a squad of raw recruits fighting for one side in a war, the side that will eventually lose that war (Risur). As the war is over an archipelago, the end of that adventure would consist of the players fleeing the advancing enemy troops towards the beach where they can...

D&D 5E (2014) 3 Years Later: D&D's total Domination on Amazon (and Earth in General)

According to the ICv2 data on this forum, the overall roleplaying games market is $45 million in 2017. Which is a fraction of the collectibles or miniatures market, but still the equivalent of nearly a million "$50 books" per year. I can believe that WotC has a market share of maybe half that...

D&D 5E (2014) 3 Years Later: D&D's total Domination on Amazon (and Earth in General)

Scientifically speaking, not knowing the exact algorithm of the ranking doesn't invalidate the ranking, as long as we have reference data using the exact same algorithm. So the absolute value of the PHB being "Amazon Best Sellers Rank: #86" (checked just now) isn't really relevant. But the...

Thank you! That is pretty much what I was looking for, and I even had the pdf in a forgotten corner of my hard drive.

Looking for a war-themed low-level adventure or ideas

I am looking for an adventure for low-level characters in which the players experience a few days of a war. I could invent one on my own, but if anybody knows of an adventure already published in publications like Dungeon or EN5sider, I'd gladly get some ideas from that. The purpose is for a...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

I don't like the idea of one player being permanently underpowered compared to the rest of the group based on dice rolls at the start of a campaign. I actually had a PC deliberately killing off his character in order to be able to re-roll.
