    Romanesque world setting?

Even though it never took off, Morningstar had a Rome-inspired Empire as its focus.

Campaign Setting Info: What do I still need...

That is a Damn fine map, even without text. I'd say the only thing that jumps out at me (and it could be just a preference) is a cultural section. IMO, this would go beyond history and politics, into the mindsets of the people. "these guys hate their gods, and worship them out of fear,which...

OK. Which of you twisted folks is responsible for this?

http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=31914 I was over there when it was first posted... I had no way to know that history was unfolding before my very eyes.

    Earthshaker! - your experiences?

So it wasn't even possible to say it was a giant golem to run the game? It was really a giant robot? Like, gated in from a sci-fi setting?

    Compound Penalties

To further lengthen my string of posts on this subject :D; A GM could also rule that skill points gained from increased Int could only be spent on pre-existing skills.

    Compound Penalties

It seems pretty adversarial not to trust your players. It is a bit of work, so I see why people are resistant to it. You could always figure out the penalties, divide it as evenly as possible by the number of skills... place a negative in the 'misc mod' space and recalculate the skill...

    Compound Penalties

Doesn't work for me. It doesn't seem big enough. I'd say the ability increase represented different things depending on the relevant stat. It sort of works for Int skills, but not for say, Str skills. It might sort of work for Dex- if you see Dex as mastery over your body's movement. Still...

    Compound Penalties

Why not? It would represent the instance of someone having a serious accident and having to relearn their abilities. It's weird all right, and I'd rule that upon an ability loss you'd have to keep track of old ranks, since it's pretty much a given in a moderate magic setting that the PC would...

    Compound Penalties

I don't know of any other such situations but this is why I disagree with Skip William's ruling that Intelligence increases shouldn't increase skill points retroactively. Personally, I could easily see gaining new insight into old information with an increase of Int. They say normal...

Why all the fuss about who or what is/isn't a god?

In most of my games they simply didn't exist until mortals began to worship them. A storm god might have been born with the first gasp of awe at the sight of lightning blowing up a tree. Alternately, it's not so much the humans that created them, but it's worship that gives them focus. They...

New In-Game Slang Based On Your Games

Some old ones: "They're cool though." used after describing creatures that no one would want to tussle with. "Oh those- those are the mind worms- they're cool though."- A stoned mystic in a D&D game. The PCs asked what the strange skull-faced serpents that swam around in large tanks were...

When "Roleplaying" rears its ugly head...

D+1, Regarding 'roleplaying' as it ties to alignment- as someone who prefers that roleplaying is at least 50% of the gaming equation, I don't think alignment has much to do with it. I think that alignment can be a useful boundary, but many people want it to be a shield or use it as a crutch...

I agree, and it's the EMPHASIS that helped annoy me. Anyway, I understand what you were getting at now, D+1, even if I respectfully disagree.

When "Roleplaying" rears its ugly head...

I won't comment on the rest of your posts but all I have to say is...man... We're playing two different games or in alternate realities or something. I'll also thank you for calling a large segment of the gaming population stupid, even though you were hopefully exaggerating your opinion. Good...

When "Roleplaying" rears its ugly head...

I don't really have empty slots. However many players I have- even one- is the party. Still, if a group sought backup that was meant to be equally capable to them (say they needed a fighter), that NPC would expect the same as a PC; not because he's a DMPC ; he's not. In my opinion, a character...

When "Roleplaying" rears its ugly head...

That's not a premise I subscribe to. But if you want the PCs to behave as if NPCs aren't 100% expendable, it helps if the world treats them as valuable. Is it ok for your PCs to kill every shopkeeper rather than buying things?

When "Roleplaying" rears its ugly head...

I guess I don't see the pretention. There are definitely rpgs that are pretentious, but D&D doesn't lend itself to it any more than a decent fantasy novel does. Let's say you were making an action movie with some (wealthy :D ) friends- say a cop buddy movie. Would it be kosher to decide while...

When "Roleplaying" rears its ugly head...

For many groups- the ones I like to play in included, the story that develops out of play *is* the source of enjoyment. Mind you- I don't like plot in RPGs, but story is not plot. Story is found after the game. Which is more dramatic: Eldric chose to make a difficult sacrifice for his...
