How detailed are your wilderness/overland maps?

My problem is that I want wilderness to be "accurate" (whatever that means in a fantasy world). I'm always worried the mountains won't have enough foothills as they become plains, there aren't enough rivers, terrain types change too abruptly, that city doesn't have enough farmland around it to...

    Sorcs with a class progression

I like Version 1, but Version 2 seems a bit overpowered. Perhaps if you required them to know the feat? (but then they don't get extra feats like a Wizard does)

cry havoc or fields of blood

I own both, and prefer Fields of Blood. Kingdom management with battles thrown in is my focus, so FoB is the obvious choice. Like already said, FoB is for larger armies, Havoc is for smaller ones.

    "Classic" Dragon Articles

Healing herbs--with minor game effects (cure a couple of HP, stop bleeding, heal faster, etc). I had my ranger out in the wilds harvesting them and toting them around (any similarities with a certain Aragorn would be purely coincidental). Elemental Gods (mentioned above). The Cavalier and...

Skill based rules for Elements of Magic ?

I think one skill check (either before you choose what to cast or after) is better than a bunch (one for element, one for verb, etc.). It speeds play and seems more elegant. Perhaps multi-element or multi-component spells have a DC modifier? A fire-only spell is much easier to weave than a...

Skill based rules for Elements of Magic ?

I'm interested. Will it be an exclusive/training-only skill? Or can anyone perform skill-based magic?

    name generator's

http://www.nbos.com/ Inspiration Pad Pro I just downloaded it and haven't had a chance to play with it, but (1) it's free and (2) the rules look complex--good or bad depending on your perspective, but it looks very customizable. I, too, like EBoN. Try this one, too...

Item creation with no XP cost?

Thanks to all of you for your feedback. Sorry I haven't said thanks sooner... work has been something else this week. I'll take a look at the book, but it may be a while... my available time just shrank tremendously.

What are the MOST USED pre-3e D&D/AD&D books.

World Builders Guidebook. I really like that one!

Item creation with no XP cost?

Does anyone have a mechanic for creating items that don't cost XP? The reason I ask is that it doesn't seem fair to the spellcasters. They spend the XP (and thus level up slower), while the fighters, rogues, etc. reap the benefits. (Is the feat to share out XP costs official, or in a 3rd...

Toying with reducing the number of named bonuses

I agree with Zad. Take a look at the Greater Balor thread on this same forum. +70 attack bonus. Without stacking bonuses to AC, how is a party supposed to even come close to not being hit every time?

    Dragon Magazine Master Index?

Issue 76 and 112 (I think) have indexes... is there one more current? I have issues 1-250 on CD (one of the best $35 ever spent) and own 279 and 281+ Anyone know of a master index?

Help me defend an Elvish emperor

When Hinkley shot Reagan the Secret Service threw him in the car, jumped on top of him, and got out of there fast. The Emperor, when travelling, has his elite bodyguards with him at all times. If something happens, they surround him and the emperor activates his Word of Recall spell/item (or...

    Taking ten...

I think there should always be a chance of failure. Not 5% (1 in 20), but something... I don't know how to implement this fairly or without overly complicating things. It bugs me that high Tumble skill means you ALWAYS succeed at avoiding AOO's. It bugs me that epic thieves NEVER fail to...

    Taking ten...

Isn't that what the "roll of 1 always fails" rule is for? Even the best of the best mess up sometimes? But if you take 10, you're not rolling, so no fail chance. Perhaps make everyone roll every time, just to verify they don't get a 1? I'm taking 10 on this. OK, roll to verify you don't...

    My Fix to Scry-Buff-Teleport

I lean toward 1d4 or 1d4+1. Does 1 round advance notice really buy that much time? The argument against doing this is that it is a specific rule change to counter a specific strategy. If you adopt this principle, you could be making a LOT of rule changes. I like the change for flavor...

Eden Studios' Fields of Blood... is it good?

I haven't seen any reviews posted yet (or am I just not looking hard enough?). Is it good? How does it compare to Cry Havoc? Should I get it?

Divine Spontaneous Caster (was: Divine Feat)

Be sure to look at the Evangelist from Dragon a few issues ago (one of the 3.5 class update features). Sorcerer's spells known & spells per day. Get 2 domains at 1st level (powers and spells known). Gain domains every few levels (not powers, just spells known). So they end up with more...

    Contingent spells

I posted this in one Scion's Speed Casting thread as a diversion. Want to pull it out of there and get ya'll's (that's Texan speak for the plural of 'your') opinion. I'm looking for a mechanic to cast buff spells when needed, a sort of a contingency spell (does one already exist?) 8am. Get...

    Speed Casting

This diverts the thread, but if you're looking for a mechanic to cast buff spells when needed, why not a contingency spell (does one already exist?)? 8am. Get out of bedroll, kick the Fighter and tell him it's his turn to make coffee. 8:15am. Cast Contingency, then Bull's Strength (or...
