Why Doesn't Star Wars Hold More Mind Share in the RPG Market?

Like Morrus said, it's one of the biggest RPGs right now. Why isn't it even more of a contender, compared to DnD? I'd put it down to a number of things, but ultimately I'd say the main thing is variety. DnD isn't just one game, it's a multitude of different games, each with different themes and...

Opinions on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4ed?

Hopefully. Afraid I’m out of the loop at the moment, as some day-job commitments have meant I’ve had to put WFRP writing on hold. But Dom and Padraig certainly seem to have a lot of releases lined up!

Opinions on Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4ed?

Disclosure: I wrote two adventures for WFRP 4. 4ed is by far my favorite edition of WFRP, solving the issues that put me off 1st and 2nd ed. But 4 creates issues of its own. A lot of it is just in parsing the rules. Space in the core book was tight, with the result that examples were cut. if...

Inclusion at the cost of Generalization

That’s not the result of the analysis. The analysis can tell you what kind of product people will like, but you still need to actually make that product successfully. No amount of market analysis will save a naughty word movie from being a naughty word movie.

Inclusion at the cost of Generalization

Not really. While such analyses can’t tell you which toy is going to be the next Beanie Baby, it can tell you what might. You take a cute toy, employ a given marketing strategy for $X = Y% chance you get the next big thing. That % is usually pretty low, however, so most toys aren’t trying to be...

Inclusion at the cost of Generalization

What point? I still have no idea what you’re complaining about.

Inclusion at the cost of Generalization

Er, Cadence mentioned race and religion in the post you quoted.

Inclusion at the cost of Generalization

What are you actually talking about here? Why would someone being offended by something result in simpler mechanics? I’ve never heard of a game system being simplified in order to avoid offending someone.

Owen KC Stephens' Tabletop RPG Truths #4

It’s ugly, boring, and has an awful layout. It doesn’t look like a map of a cave complex, it looks like a map a ten year old would draw.

Any word on this getting a print release?

Owen KC Stephens' Tabletop RPG Truths #4

Nothing. I don’t use free maps that don’t look good, but I don’t have the money to spend on good maps 🤣

Owen KC Stephens' Tabletop RPG Truths #4

Any time I try to look for good maps online, I usually give up after trawling through a lot of garbage. Never heard of Oones before, but after a quick look I don’t see anything I like.

Owen KC Stephens' Tabletop RPG Truths #4

I think part of it is that while there are a lot of free/inexpensive maps, a lot of those are garbage (or at least there’s an assumption that they are). So rather than try to trawl through the free maps looking for something that meets the criteria a GM needs, some people go straight to the...

    ICv2's Top 5 RPGs for Spring 2020 - D&D 3PPs In The Chart!

I was including those under ‘supplements for the old edition.’ But yeah, many PF players have stacks of material they haven’t gotten through yet. And not just adventures - there’s classes they want to play, monsters they want to throw at PCs, character builds they want to try out. The fact that...

    ICv2's Top 5 RPGs for Spring 2020 - D&D 3PPs In The Chart!

Yeah, this. Odds are whatever came in 6th this time round had sales that are dwarfed by the sheer number of 5E Compatible products. Having Star Wars or Shadowrun or whatever in the list wouldn’t provide an accurate picture of the market, because the truth is people are buying loads of DnD (both...

    ICv2's Top 5 RPGs for Spring 2020 - D&D 3PPs In The Chart!

Or they could keep playing the game they love. Like Mistwell said, there’s plenty of games out there, nobody has time to play them all, why should PF2 be special? I don’t like PF1. I think it’s a terrible game, one of the few that I will neither play nor run. But plenty of people clearly love...

    ICv2's Top 5 RPGs for Spring 2020 - D&D 3PPs In The Chart!

Sure, but so what? ‘Easy to learn’ is still a steeper learning curve than ‘stick with what you know,’ which also has the benefit of being cheaper, and doesn’t come with a risk of turning out to be something you hate. Plus you have all those supplements for the old edition... A lot of people...

    ICv2's Top 5 RPGs for Spring 2020 - D&D 3PPs In The Chart!

I don’t think it has changed. The biggest seller for most RPGs is the core book, most have only a few follow-up supplements. PF may be an exception, as I think they made more money from their APs than most games made from adventures.
