    D&D 5E (2014) Wish: additional 9th level slot

This kind of wish is a naked power grab by one player, at the expense of the other players who'd be over-shadowed by such a spell caster. I'd take a dim view at such player behavior. No ruling would be necessary.

D&D 5E (2014) Control water and sea battles

I guess at this point, my bone of contention is vessel size. If only a row boat is considered huge or smaller, well however you rationalize it, that's a big nerf.

D&D 5E (2014) Control water and sea battles

True, but Control water's Flood option specifically calls out vessels: Flood. ... Any Huge or smaller vehicles struck by the wave have a 25 percent chance of capsizing.

D&D 5E (2014) Control water and sea battles

I admit I'm no physics major so my rationale might be mis-calibrated, however... Gargantuan sized monsters are at least 20' x 20' on the grid, and we should consider this cubed to reflect their mass. So that's 16 medium-sized people x 4 = 72. Now that's fighting space so you could double it...

D&D 5E (2014) Control water and sea battles

Okay, this 4th level wizard/cleric spell seems super-powerful in sea battle at first glance. The 'Flood' option in particular can wash vessels up to 300' in a direction of your choosing with a 25% capsize chance. But I personally don't want it to be an 'I win' move which inevitably results in 2...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you think Wandering Monsters fit into modern 5E styles?

I roll a d20 for random encounters whenever the players spend a fair amount of time doing something. Usually a player will prompt me by saying something like 'isn't a bit dangerous to be doing this here?' With only a 20% chance it usually doesn't happen, but it creates tension. I throw a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wight's Life drain v Polymorph

"If this damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, it is disintegrated." I think this one is pretty clear, Polymorph and Wildshape have a damage overflow rule to be followed. On a failed Dex save apply Disintegrate damage. If applicable, follow damage overflow rule. Follow any other rules too...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wight's Life drain v Polymorph

Thanks all. I at least have now got a nice variety of thought out answers. Turns out the highly intelligent Eldritch-Knight did well to talk the Druid out of Polymorphing him into a T-Rex. We call that 'accidental roleplaying'.

    D&D 5E (2014) Wight's Life drain v Polymorph

Yeah, nowhere does it say in the RAW that max hp reduction goes away. By the same token, poison or paralysis would continue too... Yikes! So beware polymorphing into a low AC Tyrannosaurus!

    D&D 5E (2014) Wight's Life drain v Polymorph

Does the wight's 'Life drain' maximum hit point reduction carry over from 'Polymorph' form's max hp to the original form's max hp? I ruled no simply on grounds of book-keeping, you have a statistics sheet for your polymorph form, and you have your regular character sheet, and never the twain...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ways to tackle etherealness

An Adult Blue Dragon flying in a lightning and dust storm, with enhanced blindsight, and spell casting (See invisibility, Blink, Planeshift or Etherealness), acting on advice from a Divination to thwart the characters. Er, what NotAYakk said.

D&D 5E (2014) Casting spells with a Verbal component underwater

Nah, I've ruled you need to cast Water breathing, Alter Self or something like that. Rationale is spell casting has got to be crystal clear, no mumbling, gargling, whispering. I did however allow a cleric to time the finish of her Waterwalk spell as she immersed herself in a waterfall to begin...

D&D 5E (2014) Why so few magic polearms in the DMG?

Background situation: We play with core 3 books. Players are making magic item wishlists (by rarity) to be included in future treasure troves. So far, so good. 3 item attunement is making this very interesting. Now one player has a character with Polearm Mastery (PAM) and it's noted there are...

    D&D General Comparing Giant Sizes

I recently did an after action write up of a couple of Frost Giant combats, so I get what Mirtek is getting at. Essentially there were a couple of 6' tall humans wielding 4' and 6' blades taking on 21' tall giants. The 12' pike and lance used early on made sense, but switching to swords to be...

D&D 5E (2014) An Odd Rules Issue with Suggestion

"...target complies to the best of their ability." Helping the 2nd goblin to escape with said sword is less than best of ability. It could interpret 'throw it back' as drop it behind and run, or wait until its turn and literally throw it (maybe house rule and burn its reaction?). The...

D&D 5E (2014) An Odd Rules Issue with Suggestion

Players get this peculiar notion in their heads that one successful casting is all it takes. Two goblins, running and passing. One Suggestion spell. I can see a problem straight away. I'd have had the Suggested goblin immediately drop the sword as not an action, once ensorcelled - but then...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mission Impossible?!

Choose a background with non-combat options, like Sage, Charlatan, or Noble, and then put higher scores (not highest!) in those skills. Not only would that increase out-of-combat options, your character would feel pretty unique. Ime, 5E is set at a fairly easy difficulty. Allocating 3rd or 4th...

D&D 5E (2014) Requiring players to know their character

I've had this problem before, quite recently too. I've noted several causes: 1. Not establishing minimal expectation of system mastery. 2. Letting casual players make complex characters. 3. Allowing phone character sheets. 4. Player using forum 'power-builds' in a game where all 3 pillars get...
