    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 'frequently asked' questions?

Yes exactly, but tell that to the 5th level Rogue who just got his by a Fireball for 35 fire damage. "But I was attacked, no?" "Well yes, but no, you were attacked but not 'Attacked', so Uncanny Dodge doesnt help you." It's an issue of natural language leading to misunderstandings for a new...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

If only we could harness internet debates as a form of energy.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 'frequently asked' questions?

Do I need a good/funny accent? Are all Dwarfs Scottish?

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 'frequently asked' questions?

I don't know about other people's experience, but every Rogue I've played with assumed they could Uncanny Dodge a saving throw spell such as Fireball or Shatter, and I feel like Mr. Buzzkillington when I tell them that's not how it works.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I'm not a fan of halflings, and don't include them in my homebrew setting (at present), but in the interest of positive discussion I had a thought on how to tweak their lore. One of my favorite little asides in LOTR is how the hobbits of the Shire claim to have sent a company of archers to aid...

D&D General Gods: What role do they play in your campaigns?

I love the world of Glorantha and it's extensive mythology, so my own homebrew setting borrows extensively from it, meaning the god's are a strong influence on the world as a whole. I don't like treating gods as aloof, as in uncaring. Rather, they are distant by cosmological necessity. They...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 'frequently asked' questions?

"Does an ability that forces a saving throw count as an attack for the purposes of a Rogue's uncanny dodge?" "When is initiative rolled?"

D&D 5E (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

Since I can't help myself: I would change it so that many of the proficiencies currently tied to Race are moved over to Background instead. it's odd to me that a Soldier background doesn't provide any proficiencies in weapons or armor, for example. Really, Backgrounds as a whole could be given a...

D&D 5E (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

Also, ignoring all the potential changes to Races, Classes, Backgrounds, Spells, etc. Which is a big ol' can of worms on its own. Something that has recently struck me about the PHB is how little space is dedicated to showing examples of play. There's a small bit of blocked text in the beginning...

D&D 5E (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

I would fix the Index, because whoever organized that damn thing is a sadist.

D&D 5E (2014) Is 5e's Success Actually Bad for Other Games?

I can really only speak to my own experience, for whatever it's worth. I only started playing ttrpgs in late 2018 after being invited to participate in a 5e campaign. Since then I've played a decent amount of DnD but have also taken an interest in other games and systems. It's thanks to the...

    D&D 5E (2014) New WotC Survey! Learn About A New D&D Product!

I didn't finish the survey. Stupid NDA is stupid. If WotC does develop an in-house digital service, I hope they include redeemable codes with physical releases, similar to how other publishers freely include a pdf copy when you purchase the physical book. There's already something of a...

D&D 5E (2014) Looking for Short Adventure Recommendations

I've enjoyed running the adventures published by The Arcane Library. It helps that the modules are really well formatted. One adventure, The Secret of Skyhorn Lighthouse, is available for free on DMsguild.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

It's Tolkien all the way down. DnD would be better off without hybrid races as core options, as it would help nip certain problematic elements in the bud.

D&D 5E (2014) What rule(s) do you tend to ignore?

Encumbrance. During the Before Times (pre-coronavirus), when I was largely playing with pen-and-paper, I absolutely hated keeping track of it, and when DMing I largely handwaved it unless something exceptional came up. I like that DnDBeyond basically automates it, but I would still prefer a...

D&D General Did you get your start playing D&D, and what do you play now?

I answered with #1. My introduction to tabletop games was playing DnD for the first time in 2018. I've purchased and read other game systems, but haven't gotten a chance to play any of them, besides a short CoC one-shot (which I had a lot of fun with).

D&D General What do you expect in a starter village?

More gold than you would expect a village to have. A bit suspicious, if you think about it.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do guns do so much damage?

To stray of topic just a little, I do really like the idea of fantasy firearms that operate using something besides gunpowder, like the steam-powered muskets from Last Exile. To DnDify it, I imagine a particularly mad artificer binding a steam mephit into a gun and hoping for the best.

D&D 5E (2014) What exactly is Feywild in your campaigns?

I do something similar for my own homebrew world, taking inspiration from works such as Glorantha, Artesia, and Princess Mononoke, to name a few. Essentially the spirit world exists in parallel with the material world, and spirits (elementals, fey, ghosts, etc.) can phase between the two as they...

D&D 5E (2014) Two New D&D Books Revealed: Feywild & Strixhaven Mage School

Besides the prominence of wild shape as a class feature, doesn't druid fit better as a shaman? A Wisdom-based caster makes more sense to me than a Charisma-based one, at the very least.
