They really wanted that alliteration, didn't they?

Making Religion Matter in Fantasy RPGs

For fantasy rpgs I consider both Runequest and Artesia: Adventures in the Known World to be master classes in how to present compelling mythologies and religions. In comparison I find most of the D&D material that I've read to be less interesting. I also really enjoyed Brett Devereaux's...

D&D General I hate pdfs, and I'm happy that WOTC primarily publishes Books

I like both, more or less. I like having books that look good on my shelf (so 5e's style disappoints me a little bit) and there's something very satisfying about sitting on the couch and flipping through pages. For homebrew and 3PP stuff I exclusively use pdfs because it's often the practical...

D&D 5E (2014) A Compilation of all the Race Changes in Monsters of the Multiverse

I don't know how to feel about it yet. On one hand I kind of like the idea, or at least see some potential in it. On the other hand, I'm somewhat ambivalent because I do my own thing with goblins in my homebrew setting, so what WotC does isn't that important to me. I like the militarist...

    D&D 5E (2014) Psionics in a sci-fi D&D

So I'm coming into this thread fairly late and may be retreading old ground, but I want to return to a point that I think @Crimson Longinus brought up. What would the new mechanics for a hypothetical Psion class be? And how would it be distinct from magic such that it would require it's own...

D&D 5E (2014) A Compilation of all the Race Changes in Monsters of the Multiverse

I could imagine giving humans an ancestry option, so at 1st or 3rd level you could choose human, elvish, or orcish, each one giving a distinct feature. Really, anything to make humans mechanically interesting would be welcome. +1 to all stats? 😴

D&D 5E (2014) A Compilation of all the Race Changes in Monsters of the Multiverse

I like most of these changes overall. I'm especially intrigued by goblinoids now having an explicit fey connection. I'm curious on how that will be expanded on in the future. Orcs getting Relentless Endurance. Hmm, does anyone want to put money on whether or not orcs will replace half-orcs as a...

Worlds of Design: Barbarians at the Gates – Part 2

I may be misremembering, but I believe that's a plot point in Dan Simmon's Hyperion, with the Ousters (the "barbarians") being more or less at technological parity to the Hegemony of Man.

D&D General why did they transform the Barbarian into a Raging Monster ?

And that class names don't necessarily have to be referred to outside of character creation. But that's only a tangentially related point (and a different discussion altogether).

D&D General War Mounts for the Different Fantasy Races/Monsters

Dwarves in my homebrew setting use llamas instead of goats. Orcs use giant beetles and other arthropods. Leonins riding lions sounds a bit awkward to me.

D&D General Legend of Vox Machina Trailer Released

I think it's less self-indulgence and more that he didn't really have a clear idea of where the trilogy was going, exactly. The first book really comes together in Rivendell (maybe post-Bree). Okay, the songs are a bit self-indulgent. I've been rereading the books and Fellowship drags in the...

D&D 5E (2014) List of All 33 Races in Mordenkainen's Monsters of the Multiverse

BRP-derived games such as Runequest and Pendragon have Size (height and weight) as a core attribute. It influences HP and some other stats.

D&D General Legend of Vox Machina Trailer Released

To be honest, I could barely get through the first book of WoT. Even so, the first episode left me scratching my head wi some of the changes. Was that an 80's thing? I thought it was more of a early 2000's trend. Harry Potter being one of the worst offenders.

D&D 5E (2014) Name a technique or design choice that your group enjoys, but that is generally unpopular.

I don't know if it's necessarily unpopular or not, but I've been using Side Initiative for my current campaign. After 13 sessions I haven't noticed any major downsides and combat feels like it moves a faster.

D&D General Legend of Vox Machina Trailer Released

Speaking as someone who hasn't really been able to engage with CR in the past (mostly because of the time investment), this trailer didn't do a whole lot for me. I'll still give it a chance though. I'm kind of 0 for 2 with fantasy television recently. Neither The Wheel of Time nor The Witcher...

    D&D General Practicing DMing

Read some books. Sometimes when I'm describing a location I get the feeling that I'm running on and failing to adequately convey my mental image. I've found that just reading a book, and giving some attention to descriptions, can really improve my own ability. Especially with authors who are...

D&D 5E (2014) Yes to factionalism. No to racism.

It's interesting to me that occasionally this discussion refers back to the Tolkien-derived races, when even in his own works we can see that elves, dwarves, and orcs all have, or are implied to have, different cultures. This is very much a D&D problem.

    D&D 5E (2014) Latest D&D Errata: Drow, Alignment, & More

The two tiefling PCs I've had in my past campaigns were both outgoing and bubbly, with so little edge a Puppeteer would feel comfortable around them. Yes, both players watch CR. Now my rogue and warlock players, almost universally edgy.

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Art Preview! Also, how important is art to you?

While it may sound shallow, high quality art is really important to me when buying a book. Great and evocative art (and art design) can really help sell a game or setting while bad or simply questionable art can be a real turn off. I may be raked over the coals for saying this, but the art...
