D&D General Which Aspect of DMing Do you Struggle Most With?

A lot of things, poor long-term planning being the bane of my last two campaigns. I also struggle with post-session anxiety, where everything is intrusively replayed in my head when I'm trying to sleep. It's why I try to run sessions earlier in the day, to give me time to decompress.

D&D 5E (2014) Microtransactions During the Adventuring Day

Someone's probably described it already but the Inverse Player Pettiness Law might be a good name for it: the lower the amount of money at stake, the pettier the party's behavior.

D&D 5E (2014) Microtransactions During the Adventuring Day

Buying the pizza for this week's session may or may not be worth an Inspiration. Only one way to find out really.

D&D 5E (2014) Microtransactions During the Adventuring Day

Taxes and tolls: the most vile, reprehensible enemies a DnD party will ever encounter A guard stops the party as they approach a bridge "Hold there. there's a toll. 5 gold a head, horses and wagons included." The clinking of coins and treasure can be heard from even across the town as the party...

D&D General When Players Refuse to learn The Rules

I've had this frustration as well, especially since my DnD group is all new to the hobby (myself included). I'm way more invested in the rules than others, so it's annoying when basic mistakes crop up again and again, even after multiple campaigns and one-shots. Not knowing a niche rule...

D&D 5E (2014) How on earth is this balanced?! Twilight cleric, more in-play evidence

I think the reason for that is because the Twilight domain is supposed to be a awkward combination of the older Moon and Protection domains. By tying domains to a distinct subclass, WotC can only have so many available options without creasting bloat. It's the same reason we have the Tempest...

D&D 5E (2014) How on earth is this balanced?! Twilight cleric, more in-play evidence

But all options should be worthwhile. So even ignoring ideas about game balance, it's poor form on the part of a game designer to include options that are clearly mechanically superior to another. Compare the Twilight and Nature domains. Why would anyone pick the latter unless they really like...

D&D 5E (2014) How on earth is this balanced?! Twilight cleric, more in-play evidence

For me personally, it's not just that the Twilight Cleric comes with a very powerful package of abilities, but also that the fluff of the subclass is, on the whole, very broad, to the point of being essentially three or so different ideas packaged into one.

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

Again, if it works for you, good. But to me it's like saying you can really only understand Harry Potter's character if you start with knowing that he's a Leo; it's a vague (or meaningless) detail that's easily overridden by anything of even slightly more substance. What does it really add...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

See that's my problem with this whole argument surrounding alignment. You and other posters are essentially treating it as some mystery that the rest of us simply aren't enlightened to, while to me it's all smoke and mirrors. For example, I look through a list of Chaotic Evil monsters on...

Yes, I am just a big dummy, thank you.

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

Running an encounter based primarily on a creature's alignment, if that is the implication here, sounds incredibly monotonous.

    D&D 5E (2014) How do you remember concentration duration/checks?

My players have sometimes worn "concentration caps*", usually a beanie or something. Put the beanie on, you're concentrating. Lose concentration, take it off. It's a good enough visual and tactile reminder. *sounds awkward, I know

D&D General What are your Core races?

Dwarves Elves Humans Orcs I really like the "core four", but substituting halflings for orcs. Most people know what to expect from each one, but you also have enough flexibility to play around with them. All of them are homebrewed to some extent, both to better match the lore of my setting and...

D&D General D&D monsters that have been changed the most over time

I remember them being distinctly reptilian in the first Baldur's Gate video game. Which came out in 1998. tvtropes says it might be because "orc" is Welsh for "pig", but from what I can research the Welsh word for "pig" is actually "mochyn". So that's a bust. But then again, in the...

D&D General D&D monsters that have been changed the most over time

Basically, although from a quick google image search I see that none of cow-firbolgs are depicted with horns. Curious. I wonder if the CR fan art interpretation will slowly become the official look in the future. I guess there's an audience for "cute" minotaurs.

D&D General D&D monsters that have been changed the most over time

I honestly had no idea that was the origin of the name, holy cow. Speaking of cows (nailed that transition), less of a monster and more of a changing character option, but the evolution of the Firbolg has been interesting. We went from big and hairy barbarian types To (still big) fey-like...
