Worldbuilding, nonhumans, and the inaccurarcy of Earth parallels

Thud and Blunder was actually a reaction to the flood of badly-written sword-and-sorcery back in the day, before Tolkien became the default organizational model for fantasy. As such, it made some excellent points that writers of the time needed to keep in mind. of course he also made some huge...

    No Random treasure !?!?...

Here's my point: who decides that say, glauives are less common than longswords? They certainly wern't less common hiostorically, nor is there some notation saying "this weapon is rare" in the book, so who? That's right, the guy sitting behind the GM's screen. Don't take your responsibility...

    [M&M] Autumn Arbor setting review

Since when did homage characters become necesarry for a setting? Which comics writer do I need to hit- Ellis? Can I blame it all on him? Mark down the prevelance of homage characters as one of the worst things to hit the comics scene in the last 15 years. If rpgs have to follow that notion...

Rolling to Hit: A Sacred Cow that should have been slain?

Palladium did that years ago- you basically have something like an 80% chance to hit. I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now. I don't like that such a system turns the game from a tactical exercise, to an attrition game; I prefer the idea that doing something like getting a combat...

    No Random treasure !?!?...

So basically, you're goal is to channel players into using common weapons, instead of ones that might be more interesting to them. The intent apparently, being to make characters equipment as similar as possible, and to discourage non-conformity. I'm just wondering who this is benefiting here...

one last choice on building a wizard...

This should be the part where I start grumbling about players who are so sure their characters will live to level 21 that they start making plans. "Back in the day, we didn't count on making level 2, dangit!". It's still not as bad as the BESM character where the starting character came...

    True 20 for fantasy

I'm planning to use it for my far-future sword and sorcery game. To my mind, the system is far better suited for the Conan/Dying Sun/Thundarr genre than D&D. Some things I find suitable for the genre: Damage Save means that even high-level characters are vulnerable to damage. Magic resembles...

    Can't find a system I like for...

I think that's the problem that comes from thinking too much about games. These days I tend to think the real fun comes from them as a social activity, and not as a story with some participation. For example: the last game I ran had nothing to do with the vision i had in my mind: the game...

    Sneak attack while swallowed?

Actually, this matter is far simpler than all of you are making it out to be. It's this: do you want to screw over the player, or the monster? Are you on the side of the players or the monster? Answer that, and stick to your guns. Of course in the case of house rules, you can also ask the...

Dire Bison/Cow Please Check my CR?

Ok, I made the changes. Thanks everyone, this has been incredibly helpful.

Dire Bison/Cow Please Check my CR?

How are they off? Bear in mind my DM's Guide and Monster Manual are a couple hundred miles away, so i can't check easily.

Dire Bison/Cow Please Check my CR?

Since they're going to be crashing through a saloon, I expect I can give them some pretty hefty minuses to maneuver. And hopefully the plaers will be smart enough to take advantage of the environment. Hmm. Does anyone know where I can find a floor plan for a bar or saloon? Ehh. Druid 5...

Dire Bison/Cow Please Check my CR?

Much of my trying to come up with the Dire Steer was comparing the Boar with the Dire Boar. So, bearing in mind the suggestions... Dire Steer Size/Type: Large Animal Hit Dice: 9d8+27 (63 hp) Initiative: +0 Speed: 40 ft. (8 squares) Armor Class: 14 (-1 size, +5 natural), touch 9...

Dire Bison/Cow Please Check my CR?

For my current game I'm having the players encounter a stampede of dire Bison. Individually they're supposed to be CR 4- but could someone check the stats I have here? Dire Bison Size/Type: Huge Animal Hit Dice: 9d8+27 (37 hp) Initiative: +0 Speed: 40 ft. (8 squares) Armor Class: 14 (-2...

    D&D 4E 4e and anime

I keep trying to think of what level LInna Inverse would be, and then slam up against the fact that she's 15 years old. Then again, given that in some campaigns I've been in, evidently less than a season has passed between level one and ten, it might not be that far-fetched. (BTW: just...

Let's Hear it for Wizard in Armor!

I like it in that the difference between a wizard and an armored wizard will probably be the equivalent of that between a cloistered cleric and a cleric. As the Warmage shows, armor won't make that miuch of a difference- +4 AC is the equivalent of a 1st. level spell, after all.

Once you go C&C, you never go back

I have to apologize myself. Treebore's trolling is his own problem, and I should know better then to let myself respond the way I did. I'm sure that C&C is a fine game on its own merits, and the vast majority of it's players are fine people. I have my own responsibility to raise or lower the...

    D&D 4E 4e and anime

"Anime" is the new "cinematic" which is basically just a keyword for "this game is too action packed and not thoughtful enough". I mean geez, WHAT anime? Are we talking about the intense family dynamics of Fruits Basket? The low key realism of Master Keaton, or the over-the-top comedics of...

Damn it man, we have an economy to support! It's our DUTY to buy it!

    True 20 questions

If you want a classless D20 system, really the only one to get is Mutants and Masterminds, IMO. Other then that, dthere's a range of classless systems ranging from Hero, to Gurps, to Risus, to Dogs in the Vineyard. Take your pick. As for True20, to my mind, it takes a lot of the advantages of...
