Stalker0's Obsidian Skill Challenge System (Update: Version 1.1) Now with PDF!!

My friend N on the West Coast emailed me his AP for his skill challenge using Obsidian 1.1 that he inserted into Keep on the Shadowfell. We were both planning on running investigation skill challenges. Mine was good, but it sounds like his turned out awesome: Warning, Possible Keep on the...

4e Level 30 Magic Items. Who makes these things?

This is exactly what is going on. I found 3rd edition (and even the magic item creation rules in 2nd) to be really strange. Magic items are to be found, in dungeons. They're to be quested for. The sheer ridiculousness of the amount of gold to make some items means that you are going to be...

Forked Thread: My first 4E game...

Nonsense. Sandpaper feels rough. Contact with it provides a certain experience. 4E classes do not feel homogenous. Contact with each of them provides a different experience. Fine. If someone plays different classes in 4e and then claims they are all the same and provide the same experience...

Stalker0's Obsidian Skill Challenge System (Update: Version 1.1) Now with PDF!!

Well, I ran a session that included the skill challenge system presented in this thread. I ran one of the hardest things to do well mechanically-- an investigation! The players had returned to town after discovering a piece of evidence that the Abominations of Khyber (underworld in the Eberron...

Stalker0's Obsidian Skill Challenge System (Update: Version 1.1) Now with PDF!!

I'm going to be including skill challenges using this system in a game I'm running tonight. I'll report back.

official revision to skill challenge system

Colour me disappointed with the "revision" of the skill challenge system. I'm basically chucking the whole DMG section on them in favour of Obsidian. It does everything I want it to. It produces non-binary results, it involves everyone at the table, and the DCs work.

    Green Ronin and 4E

People have been heavily propagandized when it comes to copyrights, trademarks, licenses, etc., over the last few years. Many think that our rights in those matters are less than what they really are. When they hear of someone making stuff like Kenzer is doing with Kalamar or the 4e Folio from...

    Green Ronin and 4E

One of the best things that ever happened to me as far as gaming goes was coming into contact with universal rules systems like Fudge. Even better was running successful campaigns with them. The divorcing of setting and specific rules in ones mind is the quickest way to open up millions of...

    Green Ronin and 4E

I'll disagree with your opinion. But let's not make this an edition war (which I think is at the heart of your assessment of WotC). Good on Green Ronin for taking the steps they need to protect their business and ability to produce awesome creative works. What I'm really looking forward to is...

(Mongoose) Wraith Recon Announced for 4e

I think it's a play off of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. Or at least that's the first thing that pops into my head when I read/see the name.

    Your ideal setting

My preference is for worlds that are only fleshed out during play. I generally function with the premise that only those things which have been introduced to the shared story during actual play is set or defined. So I like to start with a concept, a short description, and then just take lots...

Kalamar - first published 4e setting?!?

Kudos to Kenzer & Co for using their legal rights and not kowtowing to some restrictive license that grants less rights than you already legally have. I took a look at the preview document for Kalamar. Looks like interesting stuff. I'm generally more of an intuitive continuity guy, so I don't...

I need a skill challenge for KotS

After Irontooth is defeated, the players find a note hinting that there's a spy in town. The skill challenge? Figuring out who it is.

    Ritual Costs and spell components

It depends on what level of control you want as a DM. I'm planning on having player characters actually having to buy the components in advance. A magic shop/mystic trader will have a selection of special inks, blessed shrunken kobold heads, rune stones, etc., for a certain level of rituals...

You know you've been getting into 4e D&D too much when...

Not just a paragon path but a whole host of at-will and encounter powers. And the class feature, My Poo Now Has Smell in It.

Another "power sources" thread (this time without speculation)

I'm still one of the old fashioned DMs/Players who thinks that if one wants eastern flavoured monks, samarui or ninjas in your campaign, that's what a separate "oriental adventures" sourcebook is for. There will be no "Ki" powersource classes in games I run unless I specifically want that...

    Healing Potions seem woeful

If you have no more healing surges, it's because your character has been really beat down. You can have an awful lot of them in a single day. If someone manages to run out, I have no problem picturing their wounds and condition as dire enough that even a magic potion won't help. Healing...
