    D&D and violence

I'll use this as a shield to say I agree. It's friggin prison. It's not supposed to be fun.

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

The monk missed the last session. Verdict is still out. :D Same player, Friday game though... his psywarrior's body is currently being dragged by the party dire wolverine... some horrible dice rolling combined with suspect tactics...

    The awesome encounter that wasn't.

Agreed. One of the best DM methodologies (if that's the right word for it) I have seen adheres to the fact that the world does not revolve around the PC's. In short, there is nothing that inherently prevents a bunch of 1st level PCs from storming a dragons lair. It's not like the world suddenly...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

Excerpt from the actual MM bolded. "Although they are omnivores, lizardfolk prefer meat; popular lore holds that lizardfolk prefer humanoid flesh, but this charge is largely unfounded..."

Help me optimize my level 8 Vow of Poverty/ PEace Sorcerer

I'm confused. How does magic missile, fireball and evards fit in with a vow of nonviolence and a vow of peace? Even with nonlethal substitution, I'm not sure how that would address more than one (specifically fireball) of the three...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

Only if you completely ignore the part that says that it is largely unfounded. Furthermore though, even if some may be known to do that, there is no guarantee that *this* one did, and a pretty fundamental tenet of lawful and goodness is that one isn't guilty of things that others may or may not...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

Even when the circumstances are this: 1) The character could only speak because someone rashly removed his gag 2) The character had been knocked out an was no longer any kind of threat Vengeance... a decidedly chaotic emotion and course of action...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

Followup question(S). Would killing your character be a lawful good act in those circumstances? Or, to be more in line with the original scenario, if your gag is removed to argue with you, and you in turn yell out for help, are then knocked out and while unconscious are summarily executed, would...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

And let's not forget that, as I recall from the OP, the reason the lizardman could shout a warning in the first place was due to another rash action by a PC in removing the lizardman's gag...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

It should come as a shock. Based on what I read, it's not a factually accurate statement to begin with.

    Ethics of Killing POWs

Actually, what it says is: "Although they are omnivores, lizardfolk prefer meat; popular lore holds that lizardfolk prrefer humanoid flesh, but this charge is largely unfounded (though some tribes do eat captives or slain foes)". Here is something I'm finding interesting in this conversation...

    Houston Game Club?

Yeah, he's still cooking those things up... We still have the running joke of "it looks about 75% down" when anything has in excess of 200HP...

    Houston Game Club?

Friday is in the West Gray/Shepperd area. Start time is around 7 PM and end is before 2 (usually between 12 and 2). The last 2 sessions though have been "one off's" out in the Sugarland area since the normal DM has been out of town...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

Future knowledge has no relevance on previous events. And he was incapacitated. By the OP description, there was absolutely no just cause in killing him. Someone referenced to BoED. I think that really sums up, nicely, the LG perspective.

    Ethics of Killing POWs

No, he didn't. He's not bound to a LG alignment. I think that is another of the major points that's being overlooked. When a non-LG creature does non-LG things, that doesn't allow the LG characters to decide to follow suit.

    Ethics of Killing POWs

Another QFT. As I have stated, in my group we tend to have a couple of terms: Lawful Stupid - This is the LG guy that plays LG to the extreme. They are such a moral holy roller that they pretty much prevent anyone else from ever having any success (or fun). Chaotic Stupid - This is the...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

I really think this is the point folks are overlooking in their "wouldn't take prisoners" argument. Right or wrong, these guys did take a prisoner. At that point, those LG characters had a moral obligation to the welfare of the prisoner. If they weren't willing to do that, or didn't want to do...

    Ethics of Killing POWs

QFT. Heck, from a pure metagaming perspective... a point a level per hour... that's an awful lot of time for someone to "wake up"...
