    Take a look at the wizard's sleep spell. As used against a great many monsters, it's effectively a save-or-die if it works, as long as another PC or two get the chance to coup de grace the now-unconscious creature.

    4e powers don't have components in any way, shape, or form. You don't even need a hand free for spells!

    The ability to attach a two-handed weapon to one hand at only -2 to the attack rolls makes me wonder how many warforged rangers with dual greataxes or spiked chains will be popping up in the near future.

    I'd say to go with entirely new characters, too. Given that you're basically only selecting discrete abilities (instead of the skill points of 3e), it shouldn't take long for folks to figure out what they want their PCs to have, even if you have to check any math after.

    The point isn't to (entirely) remove versatility... it's to keep non-combat powers from taking up slots for, basically, combat-only powers. So, non-combat stuff becomes rituals, which don't take up any known slots - just some component expense each time you use them.

    The only Wizards D&D books with any open content are two monsters in the very back of Monster Manual II, and Unearthed Arcana. The System Reference Document is open content, but isn't directly linked to the core books, the Expanded Psionics Handbook, or the Epic Level Handbook in any way...

    Illumians Power Sigil

    Two only. The original version of the Illumian gained (IIRC) more sigils as they leveled up, but with a Level Adjustment of +1 or +2. (It's on the Wizards web archives somewhere as a preview, I think.) In editing, they didn't do a thorough-enough job of removing the multiple-sigil references.
