    True 20 vs. Blue Rose

I have both systems, and both are quite impressive. Overall, I think that True20 is an improvement over BR… But that’s mostly because I was always only interested in the rules themselves to be used “toolkit” fashion, and True20 is better suited for that purpose overall. Basically: Blue Rose...

    Need Ridiculous Monster

::Quakes with mortal terror:: I was about to mention something about Steve Urkel, but I'm pretty sure Pufnstuf trumps all. All things evil and insane, I mean.

    New Halfling Favoured Class?

You left off the “Swedish Chef” class.

Your favorite reverse-cliche character type (or other game element)?

::Repressed memory suddenly comes unlocked:: You know, I walked in on a game my younger brother was running about a year ago while looking for something. I never did get the whole story, but from what I overheard, one of the NPCs was a talking Eeyore-esque Gelatinous Cube that trudged behind...

Best system for a Pulp/Indy game?

I’d go with either Savage Worlds or True20. As odd as this may sound, I’ve also found that the Angel RPG from Eden Studios also tends to work well for weird/pulp settings due to the cinematic variation of the usual Eden mechanics, and integration of the drama point system. D20 Call of Cthulhu...

For some reason I have a crazed desire to take another stab at 3e

I would strongly suggest looking into True20 before resorting back to 3.5... Especially if 3.0 didn’t grab you that much to begin with?

Your favorite reverse-cliche character type (or other game element)?

Imagine Antonio Banderas as a suave halfling paladin ladykiller. Although he was a perfect gentleman of few words, most of those words will live on forever in our “wackiest of D&D” quotebook. Man, that was a fun character to play. And yes, I do miss the groupies. ;)

Creating a govement based on D&D reality

You know, this post has made me realize that every governmental ruling body in every D&D game I’ve ever run were pretty much oligarchies under various guises.

Which of these games have you been wanting to play?

::Too shocked that True20 isn't on the list to comment::

    Moorcock blasts Tolkien

You know, I feel just like that sometimes, especially as I get older; that R/L is mostly composed of slightly differing textures of black. Sometimes it’s nice to read fantasy just to go back to dealing with good ol’ college-days gray. ;)

    Love and the DnD experience

Oh, man, there’s nothing quite like a slow-to-burn volatile love triangle to add tension to the party, bring out the worst aspects of good characters, and to add pain, betrayal, and unpredictability to an ongoing campaign. The ranger who finds himself getting too close to the party cleric while...

    Chargen with Hubris

This is one of the more interesting “game balance” approaches I’ve seen in some time… But something about it seems a little bit “off.” I’ll have to think about it at work today and see if I can figure out what. Cool idea in theory, though. (Or, at least the beginnings of one?)

If most DMs prefer low-mid levels...why have levels?

As a young gamer, I hated “high-level” gaming because I thought it was too munchkiny. As an adult, I simply hate high-level play because it is too cumbersome and wonky to mess with. One thing that I’m really looking forward to is getting to some of the higher levels in True20. Heck, I...

Best way to distribute free adventure

The fastest way? Put a label on them such as “Tophot nude module warez!!111!! ILLEGAL TO DISTRIBUTE WITHOUT CONFORMATION ID NUMBER” and upload them to a few P2P services. You'll go global overnight.

    Retreating *is* an option!

The first question that comes to my mind when reading this example is: How is EXP awarded in your campaign? In other words, if the PCs only get XP for slain enemies, this type of stupid stunt may have been worth the risk in their minds. If the PCs get XP by “surviving” the encounter, they...

How do you go about making your own world?

The most enjoyable worlds are the ones built with player input- Just ask them what they are looking for when they game; adventure on the high seas? Swathing across uncharted deserts? Tepidly exploring the mysterious ruins of a highly advanced missing race? Paranormal whodunit? Covert...

[DMs] Do you enjoy your prep time from one session to the next?

My answer would depend greatly on what system I was using. I loathe preparing anything for 3.X; too much clunk and clutter. I love prep time between sessions of True20, or C&C, sometimes even more than playing the game itself.

Non Hit Point Based Fantasy RPG?

True20 sounds like just what you are looking for. Not only have HP been replaced with a damage save, but just about every other aspect of standard D20 has been streamlined to run clunk-free as well. Definitely worth a look.

"Try Castles & Crusades", they say. But no one's playing it!

Pretty much the same thing happened to us, only we didn’t know we were making a permanent shift at the time. We ran what we thought would be a True20 one shot, and found that we simply could never go back to the clunk and clutter of 3.5 afterwards. Aside from True20, I would say that C&C is...

    What the hell is THIS?!

I think that shooting for “shock value” in a small-press product is a perfectly valid approach to finding potential buyers. Having said that, I would never buy anything called “Panty Explosion” myself, no matter how good the system was. (At least, not this close to my 30th rotation around the...
