What do your Orcs look like?

My orcs look like Wil Wheaton clones. Just kidding. I imagine them as beastly misshapen humanoids, each a little different from the next. I will say, though, that my concept of “orc” changes from year to year more than any other entity in the D&D world. Who knows how I’ll think of them five...

Does your setting have Magic Shops

There are magic shops all over the place when we run “goofy” campaigns. You can even win magic stuff for being the X customer to walk through the door that day. In regular games, no, there are no magic shops. In our standard game setting, that would be like seeing a “nuclear warhead sale" at...

Telling a Story vs. Having Fun

This is one strange poll. It would never have occurred to me to separate the two concepts. It’s like asking “So you’re going on vacation... Would you rather have gas, or a car to get there?"

Risus as a serious game system

As someone on these forums is fond of saying, the distinction between rules light/heavy isn’t nearly as important as the distinction between rules good/bad. I’m going to stop just short of trying to claim that Risus is a “bad” system- It isn’t. Risus is fine for running games you don’t take...

    Role Playing products that failed

Dude, that’s like saying “Well, I had the Necronomicon once, but I had to sell it off.” Money is transitory, but BAD is forever!!! But seriously, I’m sorry to hear that. Did you ever try actually running it? Was it as bad as the legends seem to indicate?

    Role Playing products that failed

I remember this game review, although I've never been so lucky to see the game itself. That whole "Boosboodle, a land just south of where Melvin is standing now" thing kills me. I'd love to see a D20 "Spawn of Fashion: Return to The Temple of Boozebuudal Evil" where the PCs quest to find the...

Totally Obscure Game of the Day

Wow. I didn't know that the TMNT RPG was all that "obscure." I though everyone and their brother had a copy?

    Role Playing products that failed

O.M.G. You have NO IDEA how fast I would buy a Zork RPG. Especially if you had to make a DC check everytime you did anything, to see if the GM could understand what it was you were trying to do. Some actions are easier for the GM to process than others, of course. :]

    Role Playing products that failed

I was going to post something about the “Law & Order RPG” where each player has two characters; a detective for the first part of the adventure, and a lawyer for the second part. However, the more I thought about it, the more I thought this idea actually had potential and wasn’t all that funny...

    4th Edition D&D

Instead of groaning about “not another 4E thread!” I’m actually going to respond to this one by saying that I’ve already got my copy of 4E. What I mean is, I would “fix” 3.5 by removing all the unnecessary/cumbersome stuff and improving all the cool stuff that makes the game fun. Which is...

Roleplaying high INT and CHA with low WIS

I had a character with stats like the OP once. I roleplayed him as a witty drunkard- smart, but reckless, self-absorbed, and no self control when it came to particular vices. It was fun.

    A PC who wont kill

I had an adept/medic player in a Shadowrun game who refused to kill anyone. He could beat the snot out of them, of course, and he flung stun grenades around like beads at Mardi Gras. He just would just not kill (for very good RP reasons.) Interestingly, he was one of the few characters who...

Totally Obscure Game of the Day

:D Ah, yes, Bughunters! I tried to run a one-shot adventure with it back in the mid-90's, but everyone loved it so much that I had to keep that same adventure rolling for nearly a week of daily playing. Long, long, long after I had obviously run out of ideas, my group kept roaming around...

Should WoTC Bring back Classic D&D?

Although I would probably buy something like that simply to have it, I don't think I would ever actually play it; I have great memories of classic D&D... But I'm not sure I would have the patience to make sense of it all again. C&C does the same thing, only with smoother rules which have...

The Fine Art of Quitting a Bad Game

Really, one of the best ways to leave a bad group is to start your own good one… If you are willing to DM.

    Dopey things DM's have done.

“Trainwreck mentality.” I like that. And I know just what you mean. A friend convenced me to play in a homebrew game with people I didn’t know back in the late 90’s. It was bad. No, I mean reaaally bad- Synnibar bad. Afterwards, my friend tried to apologize for dragging me into it and said...

When the system gets in the way

I would say absolutely. Which is one of the big reasons we’ve switched to True20 and other rules-light systems.
