Where Has All the Magic Gone?

This, I think, maybe part of the problem here. 3rd and especially 4th editions makes the powers, rituals, and magical items derivatives (I think that's what they are for the most part) are more or less utilitarian tools. I think it's also the nature of having such a gaming system with a long and...

    OotS #615

And the most important thing: the bow is pink! Either we gave him that idea, or we should be playing the lottery.

Someone says "I'm quitting version 'x' of D&D" you react by:

Seriously, if you're not willing to attempt to have the rules amended so that they'll fit to your group before you decide to quit, I really wonder if you've really tried to enjoy the game. "It's just a show, I should really just relax." (In other words.)

    OotS 614 up

I think a quote from the original Batman movie seems appropriate, "Where did he get all those wonderful toys?!" (Isn't it convenient?) If you're going to have a neon-pink, doily-covered dagger, you might as well go all the way and have it be an intelligent valley-girl sounding dagger who wants...

What is meant by saying that in 4e "Everything is core"?

The other thing too that no one has mentioned is that "Everything is core" hasn't changed people's buying habits regarding to D&D. Even when you knew that somethings were core material and everything else was supplementary, was that going to really change how you were going to purchase the book...

Stylish backgrounds for a Players Guide

I'd Google for a royalty-free tile set or a illustration something that would represent your cover page nicely. Since most old books have a distinct cover, just Google for a illustration of an old book cover, make sure the pictures are considered royalty-free and then select the one that you...

    OOTS 613 is up!

Mmm...pickles. (Unlike Belkar, I'm not a fan of pastrami. I prefer good ol' ham on rye with mayo, pickles, and good healthy slices of cheddar. And tomatoes. I don't like lettuce on my sandwiches!) Doesn't the halfling tradition also involve being thrown towards your attacker as a ranged attack?

    Brainstorming Good Luck Goddess Believers

You know that Frank Sinatra song, Luck be a Lady Tonight? There's your first hymn.

    I think we're done with 4E

Of course, this is also be the point where players and DM would start adding their own powers, rituals, feats, and class options to make the game more interesting.

Are 4e feats far less exciting than 3.x?

I don't think the 4th edition feats aren't any less exciting than in 3rd edition. Whether or not they are less useful to the overall character creation class than they were in 3.5 is probably more important question to discuss than excitement. If we use the analogy that if the Powers are your...

At the very least, the wity Belkar quote ought to be sig worthy.

What should be turned into a RPG?

A couple of thoughts. Harry Potter smells like a special version of World of Darkness' Mage books but for a student academy, although really the Warehouse 23: Gurps IOU would be perfect for that kind of thing, too. Wall-E would make a really cool Star Wars-ish setting where you play the potato...

    OotS 611 is up!

Hmm...anyone dare put up what kind of stats Mr. Scruffy might have as an Animal Companion? (Oh, Mr. Scruffy: 1, Magic Users: 0.)

    OotS 611 is up!

I think the "death" may have to do with the way Belkar was viewing life, and it may not have anything to do with actually reaching -10 HP. Belkar has gone from Sociopath to Scoundrel, and that might well be some sort of character resurrection. I so want to be a priest of Belkar.

How Might D&D Religions Differ From Real Life Religions?

I don't know. I kind of like the idea of having a "I slept with the Goddess Sune and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt" plot. I mean it's a staple of Greek and Roman mythology for gods to interact with mortals indirectly, and even more so in most modern religions. What I really don't get is the...

    Profession/Crafting skills: Why?

As I see it, I like the professions/crafting skills because it can allow me for a greater variety of campaigns than not having one. If I wanted to developed a campaign that would involve a party exploring an unexplored region, I could use 3.0 or 3.5 edition's skill no problem (it's not likely...

Are you buying a DDI subscription?

Said it better than I could myself. But, I do reserve the right to purchase it later if I believe they've improved substantially in a year's time.

    Mundane vs. Fantastical

This hits a problem I've started to notice with magical items (other than they not really tell us the ingredients needed to make the items listed by a player): 4th Edition is so High Fantasy that the magical items seem very nerfed compared to past editions. One example from the new Adventurer's...
