Clerics need a wis of 20.

I agree... The cleric has an almost impossible time making his hit rolls. Makes him waste his encounter ability and the healing surge that would otherwise have triggered. A healing prayer wasted because it was tied to a +3 vs AC hit roll. When you're fighting a monster with AC 18, and your...

Something "Shifty" Going On (Spoiler Warning!!!)

I agree. The wording of the ability is clear. A PC moves next to the Dragonshield. When the move is complete, the kobold can scamper away. Bad news for the kobold if it's marked. This can only be done once per round tho; so charging, the fighter's mark, and ranged attacks can completely...

    Amazon Shipping Timing

Standard came in on the 22nd... Despite the extra $4, there were people who got free supersaver delivery before I did.

    D&D 3.x Domination in 4E vs. 3E

Meaning there are no unarmed attacks in 4E? First I'd heard of that.

    Sleep. Sleep! SLEEP!

I'd just like to say that, without spoiling anything, Sleep absolutely saved a party's butt in Encounter A3 of KotS. Not the slow part, so much, but really bad saving throws on the parts of the baddies allowed the PCs to concentrate their fire on the boss for 3 rounds straight.

    The Arms Race of Races

They say they worked hard to make the half-elf cool, and I can't imagine why they'd say it if it wasn't true. Which is why it was so eyebrow-raising that they removed its bonus ability from the KotS pregen for "space" reasons, given an already skeptical audience. Also, their recommended...

    Why are healing surges limited?

In my experience playing KotS so far, the fighter and paladin usually become bloodied 2 or 3 times per encounter. But if the AP was just bestowed the FIRST time, like you say, that might be ok. Then I can see all sorts of applications stemming from that... Burn 1 AP for the additional standard...

KotS A TPK turned Capture (Advice, Spoilers)

I'd like to add that this encounter has produced not 1, but 2 TPKs for me. An initial, and then one I did playing the characters and the monsters to see what went wrong. Characters start out with all encounter powers available, all dailys available, all within 3 HP of max, but Healing Words and...

    Tracking all this stuff

I use the initiative chart to note bloodied status / conditions / marks by using symbols, colors, or short words. Hasn't yet been cumbersome.

    Minion Initiative

I generally roll for each monster, but a couple of the encounters in KotS seem to imply that all minions act on the same initiative, because there were a few other monsters that Delayed their action to 1 less than the minion's initiative (not initiatives). But it also says in quickstart to roll...

Minions. The DM knows 'em. Do the players?

If you use specific minis or counters for minions, PCs will most certainly be able to tell who is who. If you mix it up, it'd be harder, which is better since the point of minions isn't just to provide enemies for the PCs to ignore. A WotC blog specifically mentioned hiding an elite zombie in...

Miniatures to use with KotS (SPOILERS)

If you look at the counters provided for "Castle of Shadows" by fiery dragon (at fierydragon.com) you will see the maximum number of each individual creature needed for each individual encounter... (ie, if the biggest undead encounter in the game has 13 skeletons, you'll see 13 skeletons in the...

    D&D 4E 4E combat illustrated

It seems like more than half of the attacks in this combat were misses. If a combat lasts a few rounds not because interesting things are happening, but just because both sides are standing there missing each other, that becomes dull after a while. It's those blasted Dragonshields that are the...

    D&D 4E 4e spellbook questions

Some interesting questions in there... I personally like the idea of trading your daily for one bonus use of an encounter, since it's technically a less powerful spell, but I suspect that sort of thing will have to be house-ruled until they release an arcane-specific book. And I don't doubt...

The rocky experience of a KotS test run (spoilers)

Part of the problem with the paladin versus fighter here is that the paladin is a combat as opposed to a healing oriented paladin. His strength is 18 (+4) but his wisdom is only 12 (+1). So he can definitely bring the damage, but he can't Lay on Hands anywhere near as often as a more typical...

Yet another look at KotSF/4th Ed.

It sounds like you may be confusing role playing with roll playing. One certainly COULD play Monopoly as a roleplaying game, it might even be fun (like they did with the Clue movie), but it wouldn't be very rewarding in the context of a one-shot game like that. Or in most one-shot games, really.

Yet another look at KotSF/4th Ed.

Anyone who needs rules to tell them how to roleplay doesn't get the entire point of roleplaying, methinks.

Yet another look at KotSF/4th Ed.

Hehe... Officially, you can only rest once per day, and not in the Keep itself without being attacked by a large wandering party of hobgoblins. Even, potentially, if you're in the secret "safe" room. You're supposed to have to return to Winterhaven to rest, and have a couple other encounters...

Info on the Wizard (Looked at the book today)

Heh... sounds like the same spell preperation that's been in D&D for 30 years now, actually. Just lessened to a very great extent by a wizard's newfound, and sensible, ability to actually know a handful of spells by heart.

Tiefling Warlord for KotS + Extra Skill Challenge

Think you nailed it right there... Suspect the word "option" is key. Makes sense that Inspiring Word would go to CHA-geared Inspring option warlords.
