    D&D's Influences

I think some of the distancing from LOTR and Tolkien is because of the lawsuits that happened back in the early days of D&D. Another part might be because of the potentially overpowering influence that Tolkien might have. How many millions of dollars did those movies rake in? I can imagine...

Pathfinder 1E Things you Think WoTC should follow from Paizo

Nothing. Emulation is a poor way to proceed. Don't follow, get out and lead. But where should they go? Is it the same place as Paizo is trying to go? Perhaps, perhaps not. To succeed they don't have to go to the same place.

4th Edition for low-magic historical gaming

Sounds like a bit of A Knight's Tale. But one thing you may want to do is to have multiple characters for them to choose from, or even play. You could have some squires, and you could have a gamewarden in training, a sneakthief from the city, and let the players pick different ones to play at...

What are the no-goes for you?

Well, to answer your question, life's far too short to stick around where you're not having fun. And let's avoid the argument between "seeking perfection" versus "forcing yourself to settle for less than you deserve" as that would probably get nowhere. Besides, the reason I have my rules...

    Big Dark Sun hint

I suspect that whatever happens, there will be people disappointed. Some will be because their favorite setting didn't get picked. Some will be because of the results from what did happen when it was picked. Oh well, I'm going to go re-read the Tribe of One.

    Weak wizard - strong wizard

The Sorcerer's Apprentice might be a workable example.

    Updated Settings: Advance or Reimagine?

Everything must remain the same while continually evolving. And nobody will be happy anyway.

Worlds with Liberal Use of Resurrection?

    H. Beam Piper sorta already did in one of his Paratime stories, Last Enemy which featured a political conflict involving reincarnation and being able to prove it with speaking to the recently dead.

How long ago was the Bael Turath / Arkhosia war?

It was yesterday. Coincidentally a Tuesday. Belgium was not involved. Yeah, I have my own fluff.

Worlds with Liberal Use of Resurrection?

Brust's Vlad Taltos series is probably the best example of it. And it even started with a game. I think there was a D&D novel involving this as well, but I never read it.

    Looking for Aberrant/Far Realm/Lovecraftian theme resources/material/recommendations.

Since I haven't seen anybody mention it, there's one thing I'd suggest. Art. Even if you don't use the actual images, having something to base your descriptions on can increase their authenticity. You can look in the remaindered sections of your local book stores, or at your library, there...

What historical conflicts have you used in your game?

Or a fantasy book series, in the case of George R. R. Martin. Things I've stolen are mostly in pieces, taking interesting ideas, but not borrowing too much. While I like reading books like the Deryni novels, The Lions of Al-Rassan and the like just don't appeal to me as world-building. Eyes...

How is Traveller? Looking for a Space RPG...

Gurps Vorkosigan is a brand new option, and since I've not seen anybody mention it... Only in PDF for now alas. And for your exploration idea, that's practically the theme of Shards of Honor.

    DMing with a White Board

I prefer clean-shaven. Dice getting caught in it is a problem.

Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

I'm not going to lie to someone and give them a convenient reason to get them to do what I want. Besides, I can imagine somebody say "But I love the smell of beer, you should love it too" or even claim that surely I can't smell it...which oddly, goes back to the discussion involving smoking...

Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

And FWIW, an umbrella is an effective response to the risk of rain. Not to mention checking the weather reports. At least in regards to most picnics. For something more important, like a wedding or a space shuttle launch, I'd suggest another plan. This is much like gaming. Instead of giving...

Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

Nope. I'm saying any of them might be bad actors, so if it's all the same to you(though apparently it's not), I'll opt out of having to decide. It is a subtle difference, but an important one. What more do you truly need than "Based on past negative experiences with people drinking alcohol...

Why the beer hate? (Forked Thread: What are the no-goes...)

Basically, it's about the question of life and how to live it. Anymore clarification I'll forgo, as it would be going widely off-topic.
