D&D 5E (2014) How WotC will approach the campaign settings?

Let's say the development of the 5E FR setting costs $100k. Let's say WotC would make just $10 per book (assuming MSRP of $60-ish). I am pretty sure that they would sell at least 10.000 copies of the book and break even regardless of which subset of fans get butthurt by the choice of era...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you feel about the Forgotten Realms?

I love it and it is my setting of choice for campaigns (next to Planescape, but Planescape also requires players with a specific mindset, which is not the case with FR). Why do I love it? Because it's detailed. So detailed, in fact, that I can pick a map of Faerun, choose a single point, and in...

Pathfinder 1E Occult Adventures playtest available

I'm simply unable to grok the occultist class. I have not idea what it is or what its purpose is. Also, not one but two spirit-infused classes? Honestly, the medium looks good but the spiritualist is completely redundant (and the name is not good, either).

    D&D 5E (2014) Full preview unlocked!

This is not looking good for the modules. Oh well, not like I was going to abandon running my own d20 variant any time soon, but I was hoping to see some more depth added to 5e for when I get the chance to play it. I am confused about the amount of planar stuff present - I am a huge fan of the...

D&D 5E (2014) No Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting in development?

For what it's worth, I think the best way to do a new FRCS is not to have a FRCS at all. Instead, split the FRCS into the following (massive, 300+ page) books: 1. Atlas of Faerûn - detailing the geography (physical and political) of the continent, with maps showing different eras (Crown Wars...

D&D 5E (2014) MM table of contents and stat block index

That's a pretty awesome and iconic list! Very close to what I'd choose for the first MM.

D&D 5E (2014) Current state of the Forgotten Realms

First, here's a free PDF you may find useful: http://fr.dungeons.ru/file/A_Grand_History_of_the_Realms052005.pdf Major stuff that has happened since the Grey Box: 1. There was a Realms-Shattering event set in 1358 called the Avatar Crisis or Time of Troubles. Gods were forced to take the form...

    D&D 5E (2014) Knowledge: Nobility and Local?

Yeah, GURPS is in a league of its own. I didn't have the book handy to count the skills, so I omitted it. @darius0 - detailed skill systems are not without problems, that's for sure. However, with flatter math and alternative/creative ways to reduce DCs or gain bonuses on skill checks, they...

    D&D 5E (2014) Knowledge: Nobility and Local?

Responses to this thread are hardly relevant in the grand scale of things. They are as anecdotal as my own experience - players from my groups prefer skill-based systems and wouldn't play 5E if it didn't have an option for a more detailed skill module. Pathfinder, which is currently the world's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Knowledge: Nobility and Local?

All the calls for Int rolls and such are harkening back to Old School gaming, which 5E obviously tries very hard to emulate (and it seems to be succeeding). Good for OSR people, horrible for those who prefer a more detailed skilled system. That's why I'm hoping to see a "Skills" module in the DMG.

    D&D 5E (2014) Knowledge: Nobility and Local?

There is room for middle ground beetween too detailed and too sparse, IMO. Pre-3E versions of D&D did not have a codified skill system, since new NWPs and the like were published in supplements all the time 3.0 had 42 skills (not counting different Knowlede sub-skills) 3.5 toned this down to 36...

    D&D 5E (2014) Knowledge: Nobility and Local?

Huh? I'm not trolling, I'm deadly serious. From what we've seen in the Basic rules, 5E doesn't have a skill system at all. It has a binary proficiency system which heavily relies on ability scores and provides an automatic improvement of all proficient skills as the character levels up. An...

In other words, DM fiat. Until an ACTUAL skill system is presented for use with 5E rules.

D&D 5E (2014) Spells in Stat Blocks are Terrible

We're in a different boat... I am not interested in playing the game exactly as the designers intended (if there is even such a thing, I'm sure each designer has his own style and preferences), I'm interested in having easy to use tools to play the game the way my group(s) prefer.

D&D 5E (2014) Spells in Stat Blocks are Terrible

Unfortunately, WotC only sticks to the stated goals as long as the current designer lineup is in charge, which usually lasts for a couple of years (q.v. WotC annual layoffs). As for reworking, it will be more than 0 for me, because each monster that isn't self-contained will have to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells in Stat Blocks are Terrible

I know, I printed it out. But the basic rules contain a minuscule portion of the entire spell list. We'll see how many monsters have to be reworked. If you own Hasbro stock, you should worry more about the failure of their new Age of Extinction Transformers line, which is selling roughly 50%...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells in Stat Blocks are Terrible

That's where we differ. I don't want to carry around a 20-page printout or search through a 20-page document for stuff that's essential to running a monster. I want it integrated in the creature's stat block. And if I have to rewrite all stat blocks for an adventure, that's way, way too much...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells in Stat Blocks are Terrible

The above description is very easy to condense: Fireball: Range 300 ft or until it touches an object; target: all creatures in 30 ft radius; damage 8d8 fire, Dex save for 1/2; objects within radius start burning (1d6 fire per round). Components are unnecessary for creatures, casting time is...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells in Stat Blocks are Terrible

I'm a non-native English speaker. Even though we play in a different language, we reference official rules content in English. Always have, always will. But searching for a spell in the middle of an encounter (because I don't always have 8+ hours to prep for a 4-hour session) is a PITA, even...
