Why don’t players surrender... would we want them too?

Perhaps early adventures in a campaign where you want your players to be aware that being captured is survivable could include a session where they escort a ransom to a hostage-holder, and escort the hostages home.

    Prisoners

Using mass murder as an interrogation threat, then going through with it despite the interrogatee talking, strikes me as terrorist tactics, not 'collateral damage'. I'm not trying to convince you. I'm making the case for others who may read this thread.

    Prisoners

Whether or not the Rebels were good does nothing to detract from the fact that mass murder is Evil, even if it is in a good cause.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E's poor book bindings

My books are fine, and I bought them... when the new edition came out. I put an old Chessex vinyl over-cover on the PHB, which gets the most use. But I've had no problems. (Maybe it depends where you live - perhaps the exported books were made of sterner stuff? I live in Australia.)

Critical Role Why Critical Role is so successful...

One tip I picked up from a how-to-write book: if you add a distinctive odour to each description, eg: "The caves smell of ancient stonework" or "the tunnel smells of rotting flesh" or "you can smell fish frying and spilled beer in the tavern", your players will remember the place far better.

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC Dungeons & Dragons 2020 Product Survey

Yeah, we had a laptop pointed at the map, and used the figures we normally use. We also used our own dice, and just told the DM over Zoom what the results were. Long-time group, we trust each other on d20 rolls.

I actually downvoted many of the older names like Gygax. I'd prefer newer ideas, more modern or innovative adventure concepts. And I'm 57yo.

RPG characters with names derived from...

In an ancient obsolete rpg called Hunter Planet, I played Max Damage, the Combat Wombat. My recent favourite is my gnomish necromancer: Talus von Baculum.

Why are sci-fi scenarios so thin on the ground?

Vancian magic is a great choice for a role-playing game, with its inherent limitations great for defining the limits of power and uses. I commend Gygax on his choice. But the many methods of space travel in SF compares well with the many forms of magic in Fantasy. So I'm not sure that explains...

Why are sci-fi scenarios so thin on the ground?

Vancian magic is standard to D&D, but is no way standard to fantasy fiction in general. So in that aspect, D&D isn't generic fantasy, but has its own assumptions. There are probably others, but this stands out as highly idiosyncratic.

D&D 5E (2024) (+) New Edition Changes for Inclusivity (discuss possibilities)

The problem with this is some people like working with limitations - they encourage creativity. I also personally struggle with the concept of a Str 18 goblin or gnome, never mind 20.
