    Aphantasia and Role Playing Games

This past October, at 52 years old, I discovered that I have aphantasia. It explains all sorts of weird things from my life, but no one has ever accused me of having a lack of imagination. My RPG scenarios—I started gaming with the 1977 Basic boxed set—are packed with vivid visual details. I...

Now Available On Demand: GURPS Basic Set: Characters and GURPS Basic Set: Campaigns

This is great news! Hmm. Though I'm a bit nervous for my GURPS summer camps where I've been getting massively discounted copies of the core books thanks to SJ's generosity. I suspect that if they are moving all of their printing to Amazon, there won't be much margin available for charity...

D&D General Turgenev's Friday Freebie Maps

Tim, I think you linked the wrong map on this one. Should be map A5 rather than B5. The key appears to match A5 on the master map.

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

I thought about putting this one down. Definitely worthy of criticism, but Gygax's overwrought prose captured my imagination for a long time and pulled me into the hobby. I used many of the appendices, especially F-K, long after the rules were supplanted.

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

My answer will change depending on my mood and which memories surface, but these two immediately leap to mind: Flying Buffalo's Citybook I — I got a lot of use out of this book. Despite not seeing it in decades, I still remember the names of many of the establishments, especially Slimon's...

GMs - what is your vetting process for finding new players?

I rarely play online, so any vetting happens for face-to-face games. In general, I know the people in my adult groups through work or other connections. For games that I GM, I don't have much of a process, but I consider some of the following: General interest and enthusiasm Thoughts from the...

Lots of mundane animals. And some not-so-mundane ones.

Why do many people prefer roll-high to roll-under?

For RPGs, I think it mostly has to do with past experience. I've played plenty of roll-over and roll-under games (among other mechanics) and it doesn't take very long to switch my thinking. Nowadays, I mostly play GURPS, and I introduce a lot of new players to it, including many who are new to...

What Starter Sets Are As Good As The Full game?

The Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game boxed set is not marketed explicitly as a starter set for GURPS, but it fills that niche, and I think it is pretty fabulous. The rule books are radically smaller than the GURPS Basic Set, focusing on just the elements that apply to a high-powered faux...

Should a TTRPG have a singular Core Rulebook or more?

Whatever it needs. There are pros and cons of each format, so I would expect good developers to choose a format that they think will suit their game best. I do like to have the option of both digital and paper editions of any game that I'm going to play frequently.

Kickstarter Saethor's Bane on Backerkit, solo adventure for GURPS

Woohoo, Saethor's Bane is one of the hottest project of the week on Backerkit. At this rate, we'll gallop across the full-color stretch goal (which would be sweet).

Steve Jackson Games Announces 2024 Release Schedule

If anyone wants to scratch the GURPS itch, Douglas Cole is currenting running a crowdfunding campaign for Saethor's Bane, a DFRPG conversion of the TFT/OSE solo adventure, Dark Lord's Doom. Who Decides What You Play?

We usually have a discussion with a bit more input from whoever wants to GM. When I'm GMing, sometimes I'll post a couple of ideas to our discord and see which one gets the most positive reactions. None of us are likely to veto anything, honestly.
