What adventure module defines D&D to you?

It's not necessarily one that gets a lot of love around here, but I would have to vote for X1: Isle of Dread. Not only is it a very well written module, but the following features... 1 Mix of wilderness, dungeon and small "town" adventures. 2 Strong mix of roleplay, exploration and combat...

Falling out of love with your game

I can't say I've ever gone from loving a game to hating it. I have gone from ambivalence to dislike to hatred for several games however. It's not unusual for repeated exposure to an annoyance to cause a stronger reaction over time.

How close to the RAW did/do you play AD&D1?

I voted ~50%. Most of the "house rules" consisted in ignoring significant amounts of the RAW (level limits, weapon vs. armor type, helmet rules, facing, etc.). The only major modification we used was to substitute B/X style initiative for the 1e initiative system. We also incorporated a...

Love it or hate it, 3e style

They are the same reasons that have been proposed and argued about over and over since the 3e/4e edition comparisons started. I could make a long list, but it wouldn't be particularly informative or productive. Make a list of all the differences, big and small, between 3e and 4e, that would be a...

Love it or hate it, 3e style

Hate it. I used to hate DMing it and thought I'd always be willing to play if someone else wanted to run. A few weeks ago, I found out that wasn't true. I played in a 3.5 game a friend was running and from the moment I sat down to start creating the character to the end of the play session it...

    Has Lovecraft become required reading?

Don't deprive yourself of the pleasure of reading Lovecraft because of the (arguably misapplied) label of "horror". Calling Lovecraft "horror" in today's culture is like calling the old, silent Keystone Cops movies "crime drama". Lovecraft wrote weird fiction with suspenseful overtones, nothing...

Does Expertise "Feat Tax" even matter?

Nope, but unlike Nifft's group (who can't edit the Character Builder) it would have been vanishingly easy for WotC to just declare all PCs get a +1/+2/+3 attack bonus at 5th/15th/25th level and then edit the CB software to add those bonuses in where appropriate. Or they could have left all the...

Which of the Core 3 do you own? (3e or 3.5)

I sold all of my 3.5 books last summer. The PHB and the Complete series books all sold for around 80% of cover price. The DMG and MMs sold for about 1/2 cover price. There was still a pretty strong market for them at the time. The release of Pathfinder may have tempered it somewhat.

Low ability scores -- more fun?

5 or 6??? I would have said more like 15 or 16. The guy coughed up blood whenever he cast a spell, yet he traveled thousands of miles in a couple of years and helped to defeat a god and her army of dragon-creatures. A person with a 5 or 6 Con probably would have died after falling in Crystalmir...

Which of the Core 3 do you own? (3e or 3.5)

I still own my 3e DMG (because I can't find anyone who wants to buy it). That's the only one though.

    Is the math off?

This. IMO "the math is off" is a perfectly valid opinion that's based on certain assumptions that not all 4e players share (me included). There are discrepancies between certain character types and choices. Whether it was intentional or not, I don't think it's a bad thing, at least not to the...

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

My assertion is that superheroes don't have friends. You apparently disagree with that. I think I'm perfectly justified in asking you to name people who are friends with Batman in his superhero identity only. If you can't, I don't see how you have any basis for disagreeing with me. I don't...

    Playing OOP Games

IP or OOP doesn't really matter to my group, but with AD&D/OSRIC it's the same game and buying the B&W OSRIC hardback (~$30 delivered) is significantly cheaper than buying the AD&D PHB, DMG and MM separately online. That does make a difference to most people. Assuming a minimum of ~$2 shipping...

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

Being famous and envied doesn't equate to being happy. Pick up a People magazine next time you're in line at the supermarket if you don't believe me. :D I have to ask, are you seriously arguing that Superman goes out on a Friday night to have a few drinks with friends? He doesn't. Clark Kent...

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

OK. Name a few. And remember, we're talking about people who are friends with Batman only. If they know Batman is Bruce Wayne they don't count. Both of whom know that Batman=Bruce Wayne, thus disqualifying them from inclusion in the "friends with Batman only" category.

    This qualifies as art?

I like the general gist of the artwork, but I agree with the critique that the colors need more contrast.

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

Who are Batman's friends? Seriously, name one person the Batman/Wayne character counts as a friend who doesn't either know him as Bruce Wayne only or know that Bruce Wayne is Batman. You seem to have missed my point. I wasn't claiming that supers' secret identities are all well-adjusted nice...

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

On the contrary, he's unhappy when he is not participating at all. He seems perfectly happy at the end of the movie when he is participating, but not necessarily dominating. Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl had secret identities even before the supers were outlawed. They were unfulfilled because...

    OSRIC 2.0 Hardcover = AWESOME

I treat my OSRIC hardback as my "traveling spellbook". My original AD&D books stay at home away from the viscissitudes of my overcrowded messenger bag and the drinks-laden gaming table.

"Syndrome" Syndrome: or the Fallacy of "Special"

I disagree with this. I think Dash wants to be himself and his "vision" of that self is a boy who always wins races, a boy who is recognized as super by everyone. What he doesn't realize (and what his parents are presumably attempting to teach him) is that an existence like that can be very...
