Spot on. As a long-time player of wizards, I prefer these old-school axioms ... and this is one of the many reasons I'm reluctant to embrace 4E.

Trial Run
We're reviving my friend's old homebrew campaign with 4E rules in January 2009.
If we like the way things operate, we'll make the switch permanent ... otherwise we're going back to 3.5 D&D.
