[Creative Exercise] Worlds in a word, planes in a paragraph

Ok, I'll play - Level 794 of the Abyss - Roiling Torment The Boneship of the lichfiend known only as The Burning Shadow sails eternally on seas of molten flesh and burning hair under a velvet red sky. Winternight Perpetual snow and sleet mixes with the muddy floor of the barren forest that...

    What makes a good GM?

One maxim that I heard somewhere is: "Make sure that everyone at the table is having an enjoyable experience; that includes yourself." Remember it's and game and you are playing too; a GM who can do everything else but isn't having fun while doing it is going to flare up and burn out fast.

    Running Expedition to Castle Ravenloft

I agree with your assessment of Expedition... While I enjoy the original adventure, I believe that the improvements/changes made in this updated module give us something new while still holding true to the spirit of the original. After all, what would really be the point of just publishing a...

    Running Expedition to Castle Ravenloft

All that I understand, here's my issue though: If the party discovers that the note is a forgery, then they are more likely to investigate where the letter really came from than the sub-plot that the note is supposed to lead them to. Naturally, once the letter is believed to be fake, then it's...

    Running Expedition to Castle Ravenloft

Initial Thoughts -Spoilers- Tonight was the first session of my Ravenloft campaign. All-in-all it went very well. The Party ran through the fight at the town square and interacted with Ashlyn and the NPC’s in the inn. We ended the night with the party walking resolutely up the street toward...

    OoTS #373!

I must confess to being utterly confused by all the Miko-hateing that goes on around here... :\

    Finally got the new Ravenloft.

I wasn't able to find a description for him either, so i'm going to describe this since it's the same name, more or less, and it fits thematically. My attempt at running ECR starts this Sunday, I can let the boards know how it goes if anyone is interested.

What spells do you not allow?

Speaking of BoED: There’s a spell in there called “Amber Sarcophagus” Touch Attack seals the target in amber (suspended animation) for days, no size limit and no save. I don’t have the book here at work but I think it’s a mid level spell, around 4th level. I added a size limit (Large or...

Just like a paladin to immediately assume malicious intent instead of simple honest ignorance.

    Alternate Class Features

I voted "rarely" since the upcoming Castle Ravenloft game is the first time. I'm letting the PC's have the option of being members of the Lightbringers from the start. So far one Pally has taken me up on it.

How to build a fallen angel?

Second this…Great book and a very good Fallen Celestial template (Gregori anyone?)

Book of Nine Swords: Fitting it in

Meh…an existing mechanic applied in a new way, sorta the trend with 3.5. Overall I like the idea, but the execution left me underwelmed. It defiantly has an eastern/martial artsy feel with the different schools, and that’s not generally the direction I want to go. I did like Tome of Magic though.

    Finally got the new Ravenloft.

I'm about to run the full mini-campaign for my regular group, and so far I'm quite pleased with the adventure. I'm a little iffy on the way the encounters are being listed, but I'm willing to see how it goes in actual play.

How do I love GenCon? Let me count the ways!

My 5th GenCon and defiantly one of the best. I did True Dungeon and True Heroes for the first time this year; Made it to the last room in both dungeons (stupid puzzles :p ) but our team made it through True Heroes unscathed! (Did anyone else almost have a heart attack when the GM revealed the...

    Unwritten Rules

What he said... A more general one would be: "Work with the DM, not against him". Naturally, that goes both ways.

Has anything ever broken your game?

The only thing that ever threatened to break one of my campaigns was a Bronze Dragon cohort, but it was really my fault. The player who asked for the dragon was not to well versed in the rules, and I didn't keep a close enough eye on what level the new cohort turned out to be. The result was a...

    AC or DR

Well, strictly speaking, I'm of the opinion that armor should reduce damage taken...Unless I'm playing D&D. D&D's abstract combat and armor-as-defense just make a good couple. Changing that, especially switching completely to armor as DR would have detrimental effects on the game, IMO.
