I need help motivating my characters!

I have one guy like that, but if I had an entire group like that, I'd find a new group, or step down from DMing. Lots of players, when given DM duties, take a more invested interest in the game when they return as players.

D&D 4E Tomb of Horrors (4E version) - anyone run this yet?

I can't wait to run it. I'm co-writing a homebrew game that is heavily steeped in Far Realm lore, with psionics reskinned as a Far Realm power source. Like you, I'm seeing ToH as a great Paragon Tier tie-together, so I'm writing "A" as a corrupted mortal who wants to replace the Gods that the...

WotC is *NOT* Evil: THE FINALE

I'm no laywer, though many of the legal type explinations make perfect sense to me. What I am is someone who knows how to write a letter or inquiry. One thing that you did that made me instantly dismiss your view is the use of CAPS. It's akin to screaming, not talking. A friendly tip: If you...

RPG Documentaries: The Dungeon Masters, etc..

My Plan Ok, so I've been going over things and I have decided to outline a documentary that focuses on the good aspects of the game. Too many docs have treated it as a joke, or a closeted fetish. I'm going to take the opposite approach. My first Gen Con will be next year. Up until then I am...

RPG Documentaries: The Dungeon Masters, etc..

My biggest problem with the Darkon doc (and it isn't nearly as bad as TDM) is that the players are portrayed as maniacally fanatic. I know Skip, the main subject of the film. He is definately into the game, but the doc paints him as an otherwise loser who finds the only joy in playing. His kid...

Are you in the RPG closet?

The responses here make me feel terrible. I too feel a bit ashamed about the game I love. I'm not one to broadcast it, but as soon as I'm asked I say. "Yea, I play. Go ahead and make fun of me." In my job as a high school teacher, they do make fun. Then I give them detention. However, in doing...

RPG Documentaries: The Dungeon Masters, etc..

That's more what I'm talking about. Positive tone, normal people. It's a bit focused on DMing though; not easily digested by the masses. Still, a huge step up from the other Dungeon Masters.

RPG Documentaries: The Dungeon Masters, etc..

That review nailed it. You'd think that, just by the laws of the universe, someone would say: "enough. Let's shine a positive light on the hobby and it's players." I rarely see a doc about sports fans that paints them in such a horrible light. And let's face it... the parallels between RPG and...

RPG Documentaries: The Dungeon Masters, etc..

Thanks for pointing me to that one; I'll check it out once I'm at my lAptop.

RPG Documentaries: The Dungeon Masters, etc..

I feel like this is the right forum because when I looked at the media forum, there was nothing there that quite fit the topic of this thread. I'm a fan of the culture of gamers; the psychological and social aspects. I've read a few books on the subject and I've now finished watching my second...

What is going on with the release schedule? Now metaplot?

Why use any of it? Novels are easy to ignore, use different adventures, or make your own. Even the fluff in books is ignorable. Gygax would be rolling in his grave over all of this whining about metaplot and crap. These are guidelines and suggestions, nothing more. I love the fluff they added...

Interesting criticism I found about us "RPG guys".

It's obvious: I have X amount of dollars. I have X amount of time. I have chosen to spend my limited time and money on a hobby. An attack on my hobby of choice is an attack on me, saying that my investment in money and time and passion is misplaced. Same reason we like to be complimented on...

Would you repurchase MM1 and MM2?

I just read the new article on DDI about the outside-the-stat block changes and additions being made for MM3, and I love it. In previous 4e MMs, it felt like the monsters were being presented as enemies or XP sources, as opposed to things in the world's flora and fauna. Gone was the flavor and...

RPGs are ... Role Playing Games

I've been singing the praises of RPGs (specifically DnD) for years and I actively avoid comparing the game to anything else, relishing with a glint in my eye and saying "It's not like anything you've ever played." Cause it's not.

If the 2011 Setting was brand new...

So thus far in 4e we've had nothing but retreads. I'm going to break down the worlds and what I believe is the defining "elevator pitch" FR: High Fantasy with enough room for everyone and everything Eberron: Fantasy meets technology and politics during the fallout of a recent war Dark...

D&D 4E Running away and pursuit in 4e

Awesome! Thanks a bunch. This will make what seems like an amazing module run even smoother.

D&D 4E Running away and pursuit in 4e

That makes sense, and I've done it as well, but I'm talking about when the combat moves out of the board, in its entirety. I could artificially keep it in bounds, but that seems like a cop out.

D&D 4E Running away and pursuit in 4e

While I love the tactical aspect of 4e and the use of the battlemat to express it, I often wondered how to deal with players or monsters who want to move beyond the encounter's parameters. In a dungeon setting this isn't too tough, and even in an urban setting I can see how a big enough...

    December Updates

What we're really missing here is the awesomeness of flavor text finally showing up on powers cards. I love flavor text.

D&D 4E Revamped 4e Skill List... need input please!

Not sure if I'm making myself clear here: My intention is to keep the skill numbers the same for the 4e skills. If your thievery skill is an 11 at 1st level, and you specialize in Pick Pockets from 3e (+2 or 3) EVERYTHING you do in using Thievery is done with your 11 skill number. The times...
