D&D 4E 4e tiefling art vs. previous edition tiefling art?

Very, very nice. You tiefling has...*drum roll*...big guns! :p

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour (Updated 29 Jan 2014)

Executive Summary, Perhaps? Dear Shemeska: I understand that you're quite busy, so if you've given up on providing us with a "novelized" compendium of both adventures, perhaps you might offer us an anthology of each instead. Encounters of lesser importance could be summarized briefly and...

D&D 4E 4e tiefling art vs. previous edition tiefling art?

Very elegant and understated. I think the spillover from comic book superheros has proven itself detrimental to the artwork used for D&D and I greatly miss the style of Tony Diterlizzi. Subtract a few tattoos and the man really had it right for Planescape.

Gygax on Realism in Game Design

Internal Consistency Look at the weights assigned to the various weapons for purpose of balancing utility and encumberance and you'll be viewing the issue from my perspective. Within the context of the game, the weapon speeds were realistic. Thus, a 1lb dagger was far quicker to employ than...

Gygax on Realism in Game Design

Loved Those Tables! Weapon speed factors and "to hit" adjustments were an excellent addition to AD&D as they encouraged players to pick from a wider variety of weapons. The high-damage weapons were slower to utilize and the lighter ones had inherently less success when used against heavier...

Cover Art for D&D v3.5 Reprint

I must admit that I'm less than inspired. My original AD&D (1E) books are far more inspirational than these bland offerings. Honestly, WotC, is this the best you can do? :hmm:

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour (Updated 29 Jan 2014)

Drat! Aaaannnnd I'm officially let down because I'm one of the multitudes who'd certainly enjoy reading this piece, but I'm not currently and never will be a subscriber. Crap. Still, it's good to see that you're still doing what you do so well.

    Pathfinder Review: Blood of Fiends

A half-fiend is the product of a fiend and a mortal; tieflings are at least one more generation removed (i.e. grandchildren, great-grandchildren of a fiendish ancestor without any more fiendish blood being introduced to the family line). Racism? *sigh* Fighting dogs (e.g. pit bulls, AmStaffs...

Secrets of TSR panel from PaizoCon 2012‏

Because they're old farts and need to cover up their balding pates. :p Besides, creative types often affect odd (or at least different) behaviors to emphasize the fact that they're artsy types. Cultivating a quirk helps people remember you and is near mandatory for writers in Hollywood, for...

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour (Updated 29 Jan 2014)

Might anyone know... ...what's happened to Shemseka? He indicated that he was ready to work on an update at the end of March, but nothing's happened to date. I hope nothing untoward has happened to him or in his work or personal life. :uhoh:

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Edition Reprints

Big Bucks! The Beastiary II is $39.99 at my local Barnes & Noble. On Amazon it's cheaper ($31.49), but it's still not "cheap" by any means because you're looking at spending $150 to get the core books (Core Rules, Game Mastery Guide, Beastiary I, II, & III) when you throw in sales tax.

    D&D Movie/TV Dungeons & Dragons 3 Movie Trailer

Those numbers sound in the ballpark from what I remember reading and you're absolutely right, however remember that: 1. Baldur's Gate had the advantage of being the first big cRPG out of the block. It was the one that revived the genre. 2. The cover of the game featured a rather homely...

    D&D Movie/TV Dungeons & Dragons 3 Movie Trailer

Hear, hear! Planescape came along too late in the scheme of things for TSR to do it true justice, but P:T is a cult classic. I do wonder, though, if the various philosophical and moral absolutes of the Outer Planes would go over well with the masses who've been steeped in a fair bit of...

    D&D Movie/TV Dungeons & Dragons 3 Movie Trailer

Ugh! This is just all kinds of bad, rolled in pointlessness, and steeped in insipidness. And folks wonder why few people over the age of 14 will openly acknowledge being fans of RPGs.

    1st Edition PH Excerpts: Adventures

I still have my 1E books, all of which are in 98% condition. As for being "glad the game moved on from this", I'd say it's been a mixed bag with nearly as much having been lost to cater to the fragile souls as has been gained to allow for more flexibility in character customization, monsters...

D&D 5E (2014) EN World Interview With Mike Mearls, Lead Designer of D&D Next

Realistic weights for arms (two-handed swords do NOT weigh 25lbs), weapons speeds, and to-hit adjustments need to be included in order to emphasize their respective opportunity costs. As a 1E DM I saw players routinely drift toward the heavy-damage weapons until I started mandating that weapons...

    Pathfinder Review: Blood of Fiends

Looks Promising! Evil is some varying combination of destructive, nihilistic, and domineering. Unless the DM is willing to run an all-evil campaign, fitting tiefling PCs into a party and having them stay true to form is often a big stretch. In my experience a significant portion of players...

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

You'll have to pardon me if I remain skeptical of such claims. Experience has taught me that when a system is not actively set up to resist such, the drift towards homogenization and the unique and special becoming common and mundane is well nigh inevitable. As noted so well by pming...

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

And Get Offa My Lawn, Young Hellions! :p This in and of itself I find an objectionable devolution and remains one of the myriad of reasons that some players and DMs just couldn't make the edition jump last time around. And, as duly noted by thzero, magic missile was never an at-will ability...

D&D Next Chat Transcript (Mike Mearls & Jeremy Crawford)

At-will magic for fighters and rogues? What a crock! Fighters should fight, rogues should steal and backstab. Leave the 4E homogenization in 4E where it belongs.
