    Core Handbook Errors Discussion

    They specifically say that these are for NPC's and are only guidelines for playing these races as PC's and that some powers are particularly "monstery-y" To be more constructive: the Banshrae's writeup implies that they have no mouth, or at least that they can't produce a strong enough breath...

    "My hat of flight noes know limits"

    Why do PC's need to be able to fly for long periods of time under their own power? Are you too good for a flying carpet? What's wrong with the flying carpet? We've been using Flying Carpets since you're grandfather's time! If you want to take the PC's to a fantastical place where they need to...

    Elves making people Aware

    I don't have a fluff reason, but I have a pretty good mechanical reason: Players shouldn't be punished for not wanting to fit exactly into the niche their race was built for. For example, if you want to play a diplomacy Half-Elf, you get bonuses. But if you don't want to be a diplomacy half-elf...

    Monk = __________ Striker

    I just want to see a class that throws around AoE and status effects without also throwing fireballs and ice rays.

    Question: Temporary hit points

    When to temporary HP's disappear? The KotS fighter has a Daily that gives him a fair amount of Temp HP's and I'm wondering if it's a decision to make in combat, or if he can just use it at the start of the day and be done with it. I'm guessing that Temp HP's dissipate when you take a short rest.

    Monk = __________ Striker

    I'd love to see the Monk as a martial controller, actually (is there only the wizard as a controller? Every other class seems to have at least two examples [rogue and warlock as strikers, fighter and paladin defenders, War Lord and Cleric leaders] there should be more controllers). "Controller"...

    D&D 4E Why do weapons have different damage in 4e?

    In 3E the actual damage die of the weapon stopped mattering at some point. If the difference between a +3 flaming frost keen scimitar of impact and a flaming frost keen greatsword of impact is 1d6 damage, but who cares when one crits on a 15+ and the other on a 17+? A 10% higher chance of...

    Anything on what's in the DMG II?

    Ooh, I like this. But go even further: 1/2 the book is new special rules, the other half is a sample campaign setting involving those rules. DMGII: Dungeons, Horror, Playing as Undead plus Ravenloft DMGIII: Cities, Economies, & Mass Combat plus an "empires at war" campaign setting. DMGIV...

    Excerpt: Minions. Go forth mine minions! Bring havoc with your 1 hp [merged]

    This makes minions almost exactly like Mooks from Feng Shui. If you beat a Feng Shui mook's defenses by 5 or more, they're down for the count. If you don't, they keep coming. No more tracking of mooks is necessary than this. They've basically taken this for D&D and made it the same thing: if you...

    Ideas for Power Card Accessories

    I forget who made these, but a power card mockup had information on the back for how the power could recharge (the at-will powers said "you can't exhaust this, flip it back over" or some such). If this becomes common, the best accessory will be the clear-backed protectors. They protect the card...

    A Possibly Brilliant Strategy?

    The question is: should the skeleton be immune to eyebite because of fluff reasons (i.e. "the skeleton has no eyes") or for balance reasons? Because the fluff is irrelevant to game mechanics.

    Dark Sun 4th ed...halfGiants, run as ogres?

    How about Dragonborn as Half Giants? Re-cast the breath weapon as the stomp power, with type-less damage and a reduced die size and change some of the more "dragony" racial feats to be more half-giant feats.

    Econonmics and money-making

    As soon as you tie wealth to player level you're stuck keeping players at the "proper" wealth level for their, er, level. The simplest thing to do if you give them lots of money is also give them lots of money sinks. The same society that has the rich robber-baron to steal money from also might...

    D&D 4E 4e: Death of the Bildungsroman

    But, Piratecat, you are missing the essence of Two's post (and I hate to sound facetious here, but there's really no way not to): he doesn't want to house rule. He wants his favorite way of starting the game to be the official and standard way of starting the game, and if someone doesn't like it...

    D&D 4E 4e: Death of the Bildungsroman

    And I say again: so? This isn't the "death" of Bildungsrommen, it's the "death" of official support of Bildungsrommen by the rules "out of the box" (and even that has been debated for 10 pages by the nice people who frequent the forum). Lots of people have game styles that aren't automatically...

    D&D 4E 4e: Death of the Bildungsroman

    Not to degrade all the interesting talk that's gone on for 5 pages, but there's a very simple answer to his question. To which the answer is: Yes, unless there are rules for Level 0 in the DMG; and? If you want to start your players out weak, then start 'em weak. Many 3.x players started at...

    Are Rituals Vaporware?

    muffin may be trolling, but he's also got a point. Any spell that, in the vancian system, was useless in or not meant for combat can be turned into a ritual. Because, really, that's what we wanted them to be. Scry isn't "I prepare scry, cast it, and then sit down with this crystal ball" it's "I...

    D&D 4E Got to play 4E today

    Sorry, the first paragraph of what I wrote was directed at you, and then after that it was more me running my mouth at a theoretical "you" than at you specifically. As I went along the post just kept getting longer and addressed more generically at the 4E haters than specifically at you, I...

    D&D 4E Got to play 4E today

    I'm really tired of the "WotC is trying to force us to buy miniatures" line. They've made a game that grants a much wider range of tactical positioning options, the more options you have, the more beneficial it will be to keep track of those options. This is a fact. WotC saw that their game was...

    Excerpts: Angels

    They're not "removing the ideas of good and evil" they're making it so people have to be evil through actions, instead of just having "evil" stamped on their foreheads. When a Paladin breaks into the Red Dragon's lair and beats him to death with a pointy stick is he doing something evil? How...
