    D&D 5E (2014) Building A Campaign Around The BBEG

When thinking about who your BBEG should be, there's something I read about in an article once that I've always wanted to try. You make a list of enemy types you really want to include in a campaign. Here's mine: Medusa Green Dragon Hill Giant Archmage Lizardfolk Minotaur Then you assign each...

    D&D 5E (2014) Building A Campaign Around The BBEG

I have a lot of thoughts about this, so I'm going to break it up into three posts. First off, I ran a pretty successful BBEG-centered campaign loosely based on Curse of Strahd. I'm pretty terrible at running prepublished adventures or campaigns, so after the Death House I wound up just taking...

D&D General (silly thread) What alignment is your furniture?

I don't think Feng Shui had alignment. But it did make for great action scenes!

D&D General (silly thread) What alignment is your furniture?

I have no idea why this came up in my mind, but last night I started assignment my furniture alignments. What are the alignments of three pieces of furniture you have, and why? (PS: anyone who says Neutral, Neutral, Neutral will have to face my Chaotic Evil toaster.) Refrigerator - Lawful Good...

D&D General what would a standard human pantheon look like?

A default human pantheon would be based on things humans cannot control. As we try to figure out why and how the world works, we create supernatural forces to explain mysteries. Weather, diseases, birth, animals, tides, emotions... These are all things that are difficult for humans to explain...

    In Praise of Engaged Players

That's fantastic! How did you find your new players?

D&D General what would a standard human pantheon look like?

I know the OP is looking for setting-agnostic pantheons but I don't know if that's really possible. Inevitably a pantheon will either create themes for the campaign or reflect the history and themes of the setting. Even creating something as basic as a "god of the sky" means that people live in...

D&D 5E (2014) What Level is the Party after 56 Sessions?

Man, that just feels too fast for me. Since realistically each session might just have 1 combat, I don't like the idea of characters leveling up until they've had a chance to play around with the new features they've gained.

D&D General What class would each Font be?

Comic Sans: gnome bard who specialized in childish jokes. Impact: warforged barbarian who rushes and crushes enemies. Helvetica: tiefling warlock who takes a lot of care with their appearance. Your turn!

D&D 5E (2014) What Level is the Party after 56 Sessions?

I use a rule of thumb that each level lasts a number of sessions equal to the next level. So Level 1 lasts 2 sessions. Level 2 lasts 3 sessions. Once they reach Level 8, each level lasts 8 sessions. To me, this gives the right amount of time to explore and have fun with that level's features...

D&D 5E (2024) Real Historical Animal Armors - what benefits should they give?

Here are some ideas: River Spirit Armor: this leather armor is possessed by the spirit of a massive crocodile that fiercely guarded its river territory. As a reaction to being targeted by a melee attack, the wearer can summon spectral crocodile jaws that bite and grapple the opponent...

D&D 5E (2024) Real Historical Animal Armors - what benefits should they give?

I saw these great armors made of animals (or just designed like them) at the Fernbank Museum in Atlanta today. What mundane or magical benefits do you think they should grant?

    "Banned" Tag Added?

I think the special Banned tag encourages posters to get banned. Instead, I think everyone should have a "Not Yet Banned" tag, and those who get banned lose the tag. We could have some variations, too, like "Pretty Close to Getting Banned," "Wow I Haven't Been Banned Yet?" and "This Is Probably...

D&D General The New York Times on D&D

Okay let's play into this absurd scenario: DM: Okay what if we change them to giant wall-crawling geckos that spit out sticky stuff? Player: That's awesome, thanks for your flexibility. DM: No problem, let's keep the adventure going.

D&D General The New York Times on D&D

This is a silly example and not something that happens in real life. Knowing your players and communicating about the adventure or campaign are two safety tools you're already using. X Cards or Lines and Veils are just other safety tools.
