    D&D 4E D&D 4E Style

Yes. The art itself is much better than in the 3e core books, but the nostalgic styling troubles me. Does that reflect on the rules? The audience they're trying to attract? None of the 3e art is 'anime' in any way, shape or form, or even shows any signs of being inspired by it. A downside...

My brilliant plans have been dashed against the rocks

I largely agree with Wulf. With that said, I think it's still a valid project. I go back to the d20 Modern/3.5 comparison - Modern was far further developed than 3.5 despite coming out sooner. If D&D 4e only takes half steps toward what SWSE achieved, then there's definitely still room for a...

    D&D 4E Will 4E be backwards compatible?

Hmm... about half of those, yes, actually. But then, I don't recall their being huge, revolutionary leaps in music theory in the intervening years, either. :)

    D&D 4E Will 4E be backwards compatible?

Wow. All I can say is, have fun, because I sure wouldn't. I'll be here in the present, playing games that grow and develop as we learn more about how RPGs work and explore new ways of making them work better. I can think of only one tabletop RPG twenty or more years old I could...

4th edition, what did you know and when

Because, as I said in another thread, the cutting edge in RPG design moved more in the last five years than in the twenty nine years between 1974 and 2003. Because True20, Mutants and Masterminds and Iron Heroes demonstrated that the d20 system could produce a significantly better game than D&D...

    D&D 4E 4E: Why now?

Agreed on all counts. :) This, too. :)

4th edition, what did you know and when

I called this one wrong. I really thought Wizards would testbed the 4e magic system in d20 Modern 2.0 and apply what they learned to an '09 or late '08 release. That probably means either the magic system hasn't changed from a per day model, in which case I'll almost certainly not make...

D&D Needs WOW Players, Not Us

I agree with Ryan Dancey 100% on this point: chasing the WoW dollar is a sucker's game. WoW provides a constant game that its players can enjoy at any time, to whatever extent they enjoy it. It provides a very challenging tactical experience at high levels and a variety of other gameplay...

What old setting would you like to see republished?

Spelljammer, Mystara and Dark Sun. But those are just for my personal aggrandizement. I would rather see a setting explicitly designed to capture new players who weren't even born before 2e's release.

    D&D 4E Will 4E be backwards compatible?

Star Wars Saga is about 80% or more backwards-compatible. I doubt 4e will go much further than that, if it even goes that far - 3.5 was a much less developed and changed system from 3.0 than d20 Modern was, for example.

    How long until 4.5E/5E?

WotC could have done a more extensive revision when they released 3.5; they already had the example of d20 Modern to go by, and in other, smaller games, RPG Theory existed in a serious way and they could have attempted purpose-driven design. The original Mutants and Masterminds had also already...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

Actually, rules can very easily change the "fact" that roleplaying games are DMed by human beings - I've *played* RPGs that were not DMed (or GMed, just so you know this is not a semantic quibble). Are the better? Worse? For the most part, they're just different, and they're different in a...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

In WoW or EQ, I have no idea. Such games hold no appeal to me. In Final Fantasy, however, a) is covered by hitting the start button and b) is covered by using a GameShark code. ;) Not that I want to skip either in a game I like, but if I did, I'd have the options. I disagree. User created...

    D&D 4E 4E: Why now?

Converting from 2e to 3e is a pain in the rear. As a Spelljammer enthusiast, I'm well aware of this. Converting from 3e to 3.5e is almost never necessary. Just because RttToEE required a lot to make it technically correct in the new system does not mean you couldn't have run it exactly...

In that you... either happen to have another great GM waiting in the wings, or you don't game? How is it an ASSET that a bad GM can ruin a session?

    D&D 4E 4E - What Rules Need Fixing?

Items marked with a * are already solved by a simple, backwards-compatible Star Wars Saga Edition port, although they could be further improved. Prep time in general. Chase rules. Counterspelling. Grappling. Character flexibility both in multiclassing and within a class.* The time it takes to...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

Yes. One is subject to the whim of an individual who may misinterpret my expression and fast-forward through something I was interested in because I just bit down on a bad snack. The other is under my control and will never, ever get wrong what I want to do. Lloyd's Beacon > GM Fiat.

    Open Publishing is important

Mongoose provides open licenses for all their d20-based OGL Corebooks: OGL Steampunk, OGL Ancients, etc. These are pretty much D&D or d20 Modern replacements. IIRC, Conan is also semi-OGL; I know I've seen third-party supplements for it. Mongoose also have an open license for the new edition...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

Actually, I think that's one of the EASIEST things for a computer, or at least a game, to do. Not to decide the pacing for you, but to let you decide it. Might and Magic games have been doing this since the late '80s, courtesy of the town portal and Lloyd's beacon spells. Final Fantasy games...
