Full circle: D&D now being based on video games...

Wow, it must have been a while since I played FFX. I seem to recall having one weapon slot and one accessory slot and that was IT, but I could be forgetting something. I also imagine we're disagreeing on what counts as 'magical' - certainly I don't think anything the non-casters wield short of...

    Conan 2009 Teaser Poster

He killed/incapacitated a creature that could have been the inspiration for both D&D slaadi and hentai tentacle demons in Howard's 'Xuthal of the Dusk.'

D&D 3.x New to gaming - Should I wait for 4E or should buy the 3E Core Rules?

The rules? I probably wouldn't bother. Rules-wise AD&D is just *nasty* IMO, and that goes for both 1e and 2e. A mess of kludges, setting-specific limitations masquerading as mechanics, early and not terribly well-conceived game design, opaque (1e) or listless (2e) prose, and, often, arbitrary...

Full circle: D&D now being based on video games...

Actually, it's only less like Western-style/PC/MMORPGs. In console/Japanese-style RPGs like the Final Fantasies, only the very highest level of gear is explicitly magical, if that, and the amount of gear characters carry overall is dramatically less than in any (published) version of D&D I'm...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

I suspect we differ on the definition of 'fundamentally' in this context. IMO, a fundamental flaw is one intrinsic to the system or to the base elements thereof. FUNDAMENTALS of the d20 system, IMO, are: the roll d20 + mods vs. TN resolution mechanic, and the breakdown of abilities into Race...

    Was 3rd edition fundamentaly flawed?

I would say "emphatically not." 3e has a LOT of flaws from my perspective - many grandfathered in from D&D's past, some new, most where new and old met. Those flaws, however, were not fundamental. They were the finicky details (and, in some cases, the AMOUNT of said details) rather than the...

The needed monster that's never appeared in the MM1 -- or at all, in some editions

In all seriousness, complex 'scene encounters' like this are one of the main concepts I want to push in my game line, and I would consider doing exactly this once it gets off the ground. If you're interested, email me. :)

Favorite Fantasy Race: Dwarves, Hobbits or Elves?

Of these three, dwarves. From all of fantasy? I couldn't pick a favorite offhand. Giants, burmecians, moogles, clanks and jaegers, skaven, effink metul Warhammer orcs, noble savage Warcraft orcs, laguz (especially the Kilvans; Naesala ftw), even D&D's own elans - there are just too many that...

Elan vs. Illumians, which ones better?

Elan all the way. I'll never forget the shock and horror of the PC assassin in an Ivalician espionage game who attempted to assassinate the wife of the Oligarch of Romanda - and found self-repairing roiling alien energy pulsing through her instead of lifeblood and viscera. Of course, I didn't...

Full circle: D&D now being based on video games...

Actually, AFAICT, this is an aspect only a comparatively small number of game developers want to imitate. None of the kinds of games I like (fighting games, action/adventure games, console/JRPGs, Tactics/RPGs, sports games, first person shooters, combat flight sims, point-and-click adventure...

D&D 3.x New to gaming - Should I wait for 4E or should buy the 3E Core Rules?

Do you have an established group you're going to join? If so, they'll pretty much decide this for you. Expect to reference a Player's Handbook or the System Reference Document, but you won't need much else. If not, and you're likely to be running the game, I strongly recommend you look into...

Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

Because apart from the arbitrary and rather odd function of 'niche protection,' classes also make it much easier for a new player to grasp the game's gameplay and basic setting tropes, make it easier to provide a reasonably balanced tactical game, and allow for theoretically faster character...

Too old for the first time?

I'll add to the chorus of "it's not age, it's personal preference." I game with guys in their 50s and older, and a couple of 15-year-olds, and one of the former is more interested in 4e than any of the latter.

    D&D 4E Mongoose and 4e?

Conan is OGL, not d20. The differences between Conan and D&D 3.5 are subtler than between True20 and D&D 3.5, but they're definitely there. You can't port directly between the systems the way you could with, say, d20 Modern or Grim Tales, although conversion is a lot easier than with True20...

The needed monster that's never appeared in the MM1 -- or at all, in some editions

 I've always liked 'encounter monsters' conceptually, but this is the best description of one I've seen.

The needed monster that's never appeared in the MM1 -- or at all, in some editions

I have a fairly recent issue of dragon with three types of sea serpents written up like true dragons. They are VERY nasty, IIRC. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which issue it was. Something in '06 or early '07, methinks.

D&D 4E Rich Baker on his 4e Warlord

OK, this I finally grasp. Disagree with, but grasp. My suspicion is that the default pointbuy (and oh, merciful Principle let point-buy be the default!) will be high enough that you'll never have useless abilities unless you CHOOSE to dump a useful stat. This is the case in SWSE, where a...

D&D 4E Rich Baker on his 4e Warlord

Considering that you've yet to address his point in any way, aside from comparing, almost mantra-like, hypothetical 4e characters to 3e challenges, I'd say you refuse to acknowledge, or, heck, even INTERACT WITH, his point. Play some Star Wars Saga Edition - a game that HEAVILY pushes every...

D&D 4E Rich Baker on his 4e Warlord

Have you ever played a game OTHER than D&D, particularly 3.x D&D? Because lots of games, including almost all point-buy games, tend to penalize players for overspecializing. The PRESENCE of classes that can get by with one stat in 3.x D&D is the aberration - and the source of tons of balance...

    So..tell me about Eberron

Love: Sarlona, Reidra, the Quori and the Inspired are really, really cool. I would go so far as to call them the most interesting villainous group in a published D&D setting to date. (Runners up would be Spelljammer's Scro and the 3e Realms' Red Wizards of Thay.) The 'ancient empire of the...
