3.5 high level woes and Paizo's hand in it.

Brilliant. Do you or someone have an example of that somewhere abouts? I think that is a good mitigating tool for some higher level problems. I hate to take 'armies' out of my story line - but they are so onerous to run.

What to do with 1st level orc barbarians

If its the wide range of damage simply from the big hit by the greataxe that is troubling you, start out 1st level orc barbarians with another two handed weapon that does good damage. Just not x3. That way you can introduce orc barbarians at higher levels with more dangerous weapons, giving...

New Hampshire Gameday - Sat. Dec. 6th

Thanks. You folks really helped make that game fun. The last several times I attempted to make Boston Game Day there were scheduling conflicts (family events, vacations, etc), maybe next time.

New Hampshire Gameday - Sat. Dec. 6th

Thanks for a successful Gameday Thanks Silvermoon & Kriskrafts for being hosts - everything went very well. Thanks Ghul for the crawl through Castle Zygag. It is always fun killing things and taking their stuff. I really enjoyed having Prentise exercise his back stabbing. Alignment be...

    Interest in western fantsy genre?

If you want to harvest some ideas, check out SilverMoons PBP story hours. It starts with: http://www.enworld.org/forum/story-hour/99053-revenge-renewal-promise-new-year-boot-hill-d-d.html It is something like what you described, though I think there are plenty of opportunities to be very...

Can human arcane spellcasters wear armour?

Of course its a house rule I don't see the balance problem with wizards wearing armor. Works fine as a house rule for us. The cost to them is burning feats to be proficient and then the failure chance goes away. We added some multi-classing benefit limits so a wizard couldn't take a single...

New Hampshire Gameday - Sat. Dec. 6th

Re-confirming Baradtgnome & Jr will be there. Looking forward to seeing you all again. Orchid Blossom, we'll see if we can avoid another massively ventilated character mishap in Chicago this time. :) I must say though, you certainly know how to go out in style.

New Hampshire Gameday - Sat. Dec. 6th

Hmmm, that might be us. :heh: Put me and my son down for D1; I've never tried C&C and am curious. I am sure we can arrange to be killed off before the end of the morning session.

New Hampshire Gameday - Sat. Dec. 6th

I can now confirm availability. Barad & Barad Jr will be there. Sign us up for Roaring 20s. Kevin "45" Hoolihan and his bad Irish accent will return to support the O'Connor gang.

    Stop being so paranoid

The DM can certainly set the tone at the beginning of the campaign on how 'paranoid' the players need to be. If traps are scattered about randomly, or in a logic pattern the players do not come to understand, then the players will behave like every square foot of adventure could be trapped...

New Hampshire Gameday - Sat. Dec. 6th

It will be awesome to be seen. ;) But seriously, it will be a pleasure to see you guys again. I have a vague recollection of your last roaring 20s character being cut to ribbons by tommy gun fire. I'm not sure what my point is... just sayin'

As a DM, What do you do when your party doesn't kill the bad guy?

Well said. Other options :1: Bring the bad guy to justice - is not the same as killing on spot :2: bad guy is let go - next time party encounters bad guy the encounter starts neutral or favorable. doesn't mean it ends that way :3: having clever bad guy 'trick' party into letting them go...

For real this time: What is your stance on 4e

I chose - I like 4e but still love 3.x more, but I have not played 4e or own the books. That does not exactly describe our situation, but it was the closest. I have heard some interesting things, and will likely 'borrow' some ideas that improve game play as house rules, but so far it has not...

    Is anyone sticking with 3.5?

Not Switching yet Our campaigns run long in real time because we only get to play about once every three weeks on average. So it will take a while before we could even consider it. I have a homebrew world that goes back over 25 years to 1st Ed, and I see difficulty in changing the fluff and a...

GMs: What lessons have you learned from playing/other GMs?

Some DM on the boards once told a story about introducing a new character by having them fall from the sky and land in front of the party that was walking down the road, followed by a booming voice from that sky that said something like, "This is your last chance." Besides laughing my behind...

GMs: What lessons have you learned from playing/other GMs?

I'll say it differently. The PCs need to believe they could fail with huge consequences and/or die. That healthy fear (call it whatever you will) and overcoming obstacles in the face of it is part of the fun/pleasure/adrenaline/etc. It is extremely rare that a PC dies in my campaign and yet...

GMs: What lessons have you learned from playing/other GMs?

I heartily agree. Once in a while my players start worrying and preparing for the next inevitable step in the adventure based upon what they know. If that inevitable step is missing from my adventure... what the heck add it in? A case in point. Not too long ago they were convinced some...

"Ballots & Bullets" (TSR Module BH3) Concluded!

Chester Martin - you are quite welcome. Where would the Wild West be without the selfless salt-o-the-earth sheriff? It was an honor and pleasure to post with you. SM - Kudos to you for doing the nearly impossible, and surely the improbable. This was a singular event, due in large part to...
