D&D 4E SRM Marking Marked and Other 4Eisms

I have this box of cheap plastic poker chips with my gaming stuff that I was not sure how to use. Apparently WoTC solved this for me. Red for bloodied. Seems I'll need more colors if I have more than two defenders (white & blue). Too early to realy understand all the tactical implications of...

WotC has a milking machine now (Draconomicon I)

Teh funny If I had been drinking something when I came across this post it would have escaped out my nostrils. You win. Thread over.

    Respect for the DM?

I agree that you should tell the group how you feel. Additionally ask if someone else in the group can DM for a while, even if it is only for a short while. This will let you see how the group is with another DM, and give you some additional perspective. You may get another advocate on your...

    D&D 4E Non-Euclidean Geometry in 4E?

Given that we are in preview still, how certain are we this thinking applies to all distances on the grid? If movement, melee, ranged & area of effect don't all have the same rules for counting the result could have many wonky side effects. I can understand the preferences on both sides. I...

    D&D 4E Testing "Try 4e" house rules

I'm curious to learn the first time a character chooses a diagonal escape path to get out of a 'round' area of effect. I wonder how often that might come up in play. Or are you using the diagonal counting and squaring the round spells too?

    D&D 4E Testing "Try 4e" house rules

That may achieve the flavor you want, but does require additional rolls, and calculations. We first determined what we were trying to solve: -The extra die role of a critical threat slows the game down -Critical hits are sometimes are disappointing, you can roll poorly on the original hit &...

    D&D 4E Testing "Try 4e" house rules

Our group is kicking around the following idea: Confirmation rolls are no longer needed. A weapon does critical damage on its former threat range. Instead of rolling additional damage just add ½ of the total maximum dice value as bonus damage, no more doubling other damage like the weapon...

Do the PCs ever die in these playtest reports?

Given that this community is widely split among their preferences in frequency of character death & availability of resurrections I hope to see some well thought out and tested advice on how to adjust the game to suit. Sure I can figure out how to select monster balance and world flavor changes...

Have These Basic Questions been answered yet?

I can understand the preference for standardized HPs. It does have some advantages. As long as it is understood to be the rule and the game is 'adjusted' to support that I can see that it works and how it would be 'fun'. However, if another group of gamers maintains the RAW and they roll...

D&D 4E 4e Heal info in new Confessions article

Any can RBDM can make their players afraid of losing their characters. It takes a special RBDM to bring it to a higher level of personal fear. ... ok ... so I'll read my words before I post them next time. :heh: Agreed. Frequent death is not a requirement for frequent threat of...

D&D 4E 4e Heal info in new Confessions article

That has been my view for many years. I very rarely kill off players. As a matter of fact, I haven't killed one off in many years. However, my players do have a fear of dying. Every two or three encounters at least one character, but usually more ends up close to perishing. Through the...

Why do Combatants Circle Each Other?

Of course! And a fencer leads with the same foot as they hold their weapon, so right handed fencers circle right. Well articulated description.

Why do Combatants Circle Each Other?

bingo. From the view of something like fencing, you are are attempting to get into a position of an explosive lunge. You want to be in range but not let your opponent know you are. In addition to the moving around, there would be small moves in and out. Moving to your 'handed' side also has...

    Castle Zagyg gameday, Portsmouth, NH

Very tempting. Alas, I have a potential family conflict upon that date and may not commit at this time. I am sure the slots will be filled by the time I determine whether I could or not. Pity that. Sounds like a good kill things and take their stuff outing.

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

It might. Even as I typed the others I knew they were not right. I just couldn't put my finger on the right word. This is a clever bunch, I'm sure a better name will arise.

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

True enough. Half my gaming group is AARP material. As someone who was once 22, and now <ahem> a little more than forty I don't see it as bad. I trust you will live to be on this side of the discussion some day, and still be able to enjoy the hobby if you choose. I think there is actually...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

I do not see how they are ignoring us. I may or may not move to 4e, but clearly the items in 3e that we complained about are being addressed. If they address them in a way that fits our homebrews, view of how D&D should be, improves our gaming experience, then we'll buy. simple.

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

Thank you. Where do most new RPG gamers come from I wonder. Is it WoTC marketing efforts direct to potential gamers, or do more come from the loins of us Grognards? My 19 old son was raised a gamer, and now is bringing in new blood as the central point of his own group.

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

Thank you. Being a Grognard who meets the requirements of more than a few of those descriptions, I wish we could use a different term for someone who is resisting/sabotaging any potential change. Having bought Basic, AD&D, 3e & 3.5 I don't think I am killing the game growth. Perhaps Luddite...

What ever happened to just "playing" the game and telling a great story?

Nicely said. When I just can't contain myself and must give players a long history, I write it down and leave it for them to enjoy or not. My games are often complex and refer back to such history, so it is there in writing for them if they choose to go back and look it up. It is never...
